Strict gender roles

Ruled by men
Women barely have control and identity

Mrs. Hale & Mrs. Peters identified by their husbands' last
names
Only Minnie Wright gets a first name, in which she is
emphasized by the transformation of her marriage, losing
her own identity and changes her last name from Foster
to Wright
Women isolated at home while men socialize
through work
(LitCharts, n.d.)
Women's characters are mocked by the men, i.e.: intelligence, subservience
The men fail to recognize the women's role, subjected to an oppressive treatment
The women are mocked by the men for housekeeping and for the comfort they require - the only things
women are allowed to enjoy

Women are to blame for appreciating the little things that

their persecution allows them to have
In the play, the women have appeared to accept the
oppressive gender norms as part of the natural world
order
As the play continues, Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters have
come to realize the oppression through Mrs. Wright's
dead bird
The bird was strangled by Mr. Wright - their hopes and
lives being strangled
They connect through this mutual recognition and begin
to rebel in their own quiet but powerful way
