VOICE
ST. DEVASAGAYAM AND THE GRACE OF MARTYRDOM
‘Martyrdom’ in its true meaning signifies ‘witnessing to Christ’.It is God’s grace, a gift to us from
the day of our baptism, and also our task. These are the last words of Our Lord Jesus Christ to his
disciples before his Ascension:
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses
in Jerusalem and in Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth” (Acts 1: 8).
“Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that
repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from
Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things” (Lk. 24: 46-47).
The Church in India has offered to the Universal Church some great saints who manifest the unique
facets of sanctity and evangelical witness:
- St. Joseph Vaz, a model of evangelical courage in the midstof extremely difficult circumstances
- St. Alphonsa, a model of divine joy and unflinching fidelity to Christ within the monastery
- St. Mother Teresa of Kolkota, a model of evangelical love for the poorest of the poor
- Blessed Rani Maria, a model of firm commitment unto death for justice and human rights
- St. Devasagayam, a model of unshakeable Christian faith in the midst of tortures and pain.
The sealing in the gifts of the Holy Spirit given to us at Confirmation is to make us unswerving
disciples of Christ who witness to him in all circumstances whether favourable or unfavourable. No
amount of tortures, insults, indignities and pain inflicted on us can diminish our faith in Christas the
Way, the Truth and the Life, the Resurrection and the Life, in whom we have placed all our trust. This
is the courage the martyrs have shown throughout the history of the Church; therefore the Church
places them as models and exemplars of true Christian discipleship, from whom we learn to say ‘yes’
to God’s will, which is first and foremost embodied in Jesus Christ our Lord.
We give praise and thanks to God that the Church in India has given a valiant martyr to the Universal
Church in the person of St. Devasagayam, a layman canonised by Pope Francis on May 15, 2022.
A son of Kottar in the present-day Tamilnadu and a devout Christian in the army of the King of
Travancore he was arrested and subjected to the worst of tortures and ignominies for being a Christian
for nearly three years and finally put to death on the orders of the king on the midnight of January 14,
1752 at the age of forty.
What do we learn from this great martyr of the Indian Church?
The very name Devasagayam, which he received at baptism, means ‘God is our help’. It stands for the
Hebrew ‘Eleazar’ and the Greek ‘Lazaros’ – in other words, ‘we are beggars before God’, therefore
nobody has the right to be ‘proud’ or ‘boastful’ in one’s life. As St. Paul exhorts us, “Let the one who
boasts, boast in the Lord” (1Cor. 1: 31). After his conversion to Christ, he never again boasted about
his moral or social or religious superiority but his utter dependence on God. This humility we learn
from our Blessed Mother too in her Magnificat where she declares her nothingness before God and
the marvellous ways in which he scatters the proud, brings down the mighty from their thrones and
exalts those of humble estate.
St. Devasagayam manifests this humility in his life. Bishop Clemens Joseph of Cochin in his Ad

Limina Visit to Pope Benedict XIV dated November 14, 1756 compares him to the ‘Eleazar’ of the
Old Testament (cf. 2Macabees 6: 18-31)when he states: “I would certainly call him Eleazar rather
than Lazarus, because like that most venerable old man, Devasagayam embraced a most glorious
death rather than a detestable life and willingly faced punishment and died readily and courageously
for the sake of the most weighty and most holy laws, leaving behind the memory of his death as an
example of virtue and fortitude not only to the young, but to the whole people”.
His faith in Christ was so strong that no amount of force or threats or even death would deter him
from openly professing his discipleship of Christ and obedience to him. He would rather embrace any
kind of punishment than renounce his faith in Jesus Christ as hisLord and Saviour; and in this he was
a source of courage and strength to other Christians who were being harassed for their faith.
On February 23, 1749 he was arrested and put in a very narrow prison. When he was dragged and
tortured the next day on the orders of the king,he was filled with a great heavenly joy like that of
Stephen at his martyrdom (cf. Acts 7: 55-56) and the people who saw him wondered from where
came this radiant joy on his face.
We read about the joy of the early Church in the midst of the bitter persecution raging against them:
“Then they left the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonour
for the name” (Acts 5:41).
This kind of divine joy (and not mere happiness) which is invariably connected with peace is the
precious gift Christ Our Lord has left for us, and it shines out not only when things are going well for
us, but more specially when pain and suffering come into our lives. We remember the words of Our
Lord at the Last Supper: “These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your
joy may be full” (Jn. 15: 11). These words have to do with our ‘abiding in him and his abiding in us’
like the ‘branches in the vine’ (cf. Jn. 15: 1-17). They also refer to thepromise of the Holy Spiritto
dwell with us forever: “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father,
and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world
cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and
will be in you” (Jn. 14: 15-17).
When the Spirit of the Lord is dwelling in us - as St. Paul would emphasize – we bear the ‘fruit of
the Spirit’, and this fruit is, “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness,
self-control” (Gal. 5: 22-23). All the saints and specially martyrs have demonstrated this fruit in their
lives and particularly in their death.
In the midst of his most excruciating torments, he was a man of humour – this also is a mark of the
saints, e.g., St. Thomas More joking with his executioner about the innocence of his long beard
moments before the axe fell on his neck. When Devasagayam, was being paraded in the streets for
sixteen consecutive days, seated on a buffalo with hands tied behind the back and made a butt of
scorn and mockeries, he jokingly asked the constables whether they had ever seen a man more highly
honoured by the king than he.
Through all this ignominy he was not broken but became a more ardent soldier of Christ testifying to
his faith through his patience, joy and praises of God.
After the arrest and the parades his agony continued, but he never made any attempt to escape from
his sufferings. This is how Bishop Clemens Joseph describes it:
“Left under the open sky, exposed to the burning sun, heavy rains, very cold north wind, and sometimes

almost submerged in the mud, he endured very grievous sufferings until moved by pity the guards
themselves constructed there a small hut made of palm leaves, so that he could be protected a little
from the inclemency of the weather. For seven months he lay under a tree, hugging the tree itself with
his legs bound in chains and tied to the tree with fetters, so that he could not move about or stand up
or recline on the side, but was forced to sit up or to lie down on the back. After seven months he was
loosed from the tree, but not from the fetters, with which he was kept bound till his death. In the midst
of so many sufferings his only sorrow was the delay of death, the only fear that he might lose the
crown of martyrdom. Far from requesting or desiring to be set free from the chains, he did not allow
the guards to remove his fetters asthey wanted to do when he was suffering from fever. And when one
of those guards took the initiative to give him the chance to escape, he simply refused.”
His incarceration and his chains were for him an opportunity to deepen his communion with God in
prayer and to contemplate the heavenly truths. He even read books on the lives of saints, and read
them in a loud voice so that the bystanders could hear what he was reading. He fasted on Fridays and
Saturdays, paying tribute to the Divine Saviour and his Blessed Mother.
Though it was difficult for priests to reach out to him in prison with the sacraments of Reconciliation
and Holy Communion, he longed for them with the deepest humility and love for Christ and used to
be overjoyed whenever the opportunity was granted to him by God.
People flocked to him in prison to see him, listen to him and even be touched by him; and God
worked many miracles through him. The guards did not hinder those who came to see him and were
themselves among those who were his venerators.
However, it was anew master of the guards who was totally opposed to this ‘veneration’ of the
prisoner and, after having forbidden people from coming to meet him, he obtained an order from the
king to execute Devasagayam secretly.
On the midnight of January 14, 1752, he was awakened by some soldiers as though summoned by
the master of the guards, and, still in fetters, carried to the foot of the nearby mountain. He knew
what was awaiting him, so he asked for some time to pray and, on bended knees, he prayed for fifteen
minutes, after which he told the soldiers that he had done his duty and that they could go ahead with
their intention. Five leaden bullets hit him.For the last time he uttered the familiar words, ‘Jesus save
me’ and surrendered his soul into the hands of his Creator.
His body was thrown to beasts of the forest. It was only after a week or so that the Christians gathered
the bones and buried them in the famous church of St. Francis Xavier in Kottar. Over the tomb a stone
was laid to tell posterity about the treasure hidden beneath.
May this ‘treasure’ never cease to inspire us in our commitment to Christ and his Gospel.

May my meditation be pleasing to
the Lord!(Psalm 104.34)

REV. FR. AROCKIA DHAS

Saint Romuald says, “Better to pray one psalm with devotion and compunction than a hundred (of
psalms) with distraction.” This reflection on the Psalm 104.34 is the fruit of a spiritual sojourn.
The psalmist, in awe of the beauty of the Lord’s creation, praises Him singing, “I will sing to the
Lord as long as I live; I will sing to my God... May my meditation be pleasing to him, for I rejoice
in the Lord.” We often desire that our lives and our ministry be pleasing to the Lord as that of the
psalmist’s prayer. I marvel at the psalmist’s profound spirituality. He radiates with divine joy as I see
him penning down the psalm, “May my meditation be pleasing to the Lord!” I often ask: what is the
source and content of the meditation of the psalmist’s desire that his meditation be pleasing to the
Lord alone?
The author of the Psalm 104 represents the nation of Israel and its inhabitants.Through them, this
psalm becomes the prayer of the whole humanity. Rightly so,those prized words from the Psalm
104.34 are placed in the mouth of the psalmist. He represents us too! Often our exhaustedminds fail
to articulate oursilentlonging, and to label our confusions and suffering as expressed by the psalmist.
Theylet us into a life of denial as if all is well in our society, and letting us live unaffected and
become indifferent. But the realitycontradicts our false assumption! The reality ‘who we are’pushes
us for a renewal and change, and fresh beginnings and revivals! Along with God’s dynamicgrace, we
humbly acknowledge, ‘there in us’are restlessness, undue worry and anxiety, unwillingness, and non-
availability to God’s plan. Being aware of this and his own personal pitfalls, the psalmist prays: May
my meditation be pleasing to the Lord!
The verse of the Psalm is carved on our minds and hearts.Often it is found on our lips when we visit
a sacred place namely the cathedral, the shrine, the oratory, the church and the chapel to find some
respite, rest, calmness and peace from ourbusy life.We pour out to Godour troubles and confusions
beyond our control, and at times some of themareself-caused namely climate change, aftermath of
tornadoes and hurricanes, refugee crisis, human trafficking, the process and results of the recently
concluded general elections, the current political situations in the world, bilateral tensions between
neighbourly countries, ever-growing terrorism often sponsored at times by the states, riots erupted
by the communal elements for the electoral benefit, exploitation of natural resources, profit-oriented
industrialization and consumerism, deplorable inequality including economic, social, regional and
rural-urban inequalities, institutional scandals, loss of loved ones to terminal illnesses and accidents,
life-threatening diseases, economic loss, and experience of betrayals at the hands of our beloved
ones, colleagues, employers and trusted authorities. Amidst these experiences of disappointments,
troubles, confusions, sufferings, hopelessness, and painhow do we live a life pleasing to the Lordasthe
Psalmist desires?
Saint John Eudes says, “Faith is a beam radiating from the face of God.” Through her prayerJesus, I
Give You My Heart, Mother Fulienne de RosaireOP,offersusaproposal to make our meditationalways
pleasing to the Lord. She prays,“Jesus, I give you my heart so that you may replace it with your heart
and so that I may thus love God as you do,love my brothers [and sisters] as you do…May your gaze
transform my eyes so that I may look upon all people as you would, with kindness and benevolence!
May your light fill my mind and may it radiate through me and enlighten those whom I meet.May your

love set my heart ablaze and move through my words and gestures, filling all with your meekness,
your goodness, your humility, and your tenderness.May my life be an incessant prayer of praise, of
adoration and of love to God through a sincere “yes” to his will at every moment!”
The lives of the holy men and women in the Holy Bible and of the Catholic Church throughout the
centuries inspire us to put in more efforts to please God as they did. Here are some guiding posts how
to please God in our life:by cultivating the art of experiencing silence within ourselves to remove any
sources of distractions which bother us or prevent us from letting God take over;by stopping thinking
of our tasks, our uncertainties, our fears, and our goals of any sort during the time of personal and
public prayer;by letting go of all the concerns of the present moment to let God fill us with his love,by
expecting nothing in return from God, by making no particular request for anything in prayer, by
constantly recollecting God’s presence to realize His indwelling Spirit within us to live a life of total
submission to God’s will, by praying in the name of love and in the name of the Church, by letting
the Holy Spirit come near and prepare us to be receptive to the Lord, by filling our hearts with His
divine joy, by gradually getting attached to and be occupied with the thoughts of God and by devoting
ourselves wholeheartedly to the Lord and to the completion of His projects in service for the needy
neighbours. These guidelines are inspired by the personal belief of Saint Pope John Paul II who says,
“The holiness is the necessary measure of ordinary Christian life and the way of achieving eternal
communion with God.” His belief vibrates with the psalmist.
It’s true from the mystics of the Catholic Spirituality, “God desires from us the smallest degree of
purity of conscience…” I pray, may weponder over spiritual things to make our thoughts holy, and our
life Christ-like (Philippians 2.1 -11). May the inspiration of the Psalm 104 draw us to closer to Jesus,
the only content of the mediation of our life, and to be dearer to Him! With a divine joyradiating in us,
we now pray with the psalmist, “May my (our) meditation be pleasing to the Lord for I (we) rejoice
in Him!”

Venerable Augustine Tolton
Patron of the
Suffering and the Marginalised

REV. FR. AROCKIA DHAS

“If God sends you sufferings, it is a sign that He has great plans for you and certainly wants to make
you a saint.” These words of Saint Ignatius of Loyola rooted inhis profound and spiritual discernment
sound real in the life of Venerable Augustine Tolton, the First African American Priest.
A woman well up on age, then a little girl who attended the funeral of FatherTolton in 1897, gave
her testimony to Cardinal Wilton Gregory, Archbishop of Washington, saying, “I feel close to Father
Tolton. I am so proud that there are people here in the Archdiocese, very actively involved in promoting
his cause (to sainthood). He was a fiery furnace but walked around as an angel.”
Tolton’sEducationin Quincy, Illinois
Tolton was born of slave parents, Peter Paul Tolton and Martha Jane Chisley, on a plantation owned
by a white Catholic in Missouri on the 1stof April 1854. At that time the masters required that their
slaves and the children of the slaves were to be baptized into Catholicism. So he was baptized as
Augustine Tolton. The Toltons escaped to freedom during the chaotic Civil War by crossing the
Mississippi River one night in a row boat as Confederate soldiers fired at them from the shore. Later
they moved to Quincy. He attended an otherwise all-white Catholic school in Quincy. Martha Jane
Chisley, Tolton’s mother, tried enrolling her precocious son at the parish school. But other families
at the predominantly white German Church, revolted and threatened to withdraw their membership
while he was bullied and harassed by his classmates. After a month, he was forced to leave the school.
He entered Saint Peter Catholic School throughthe helpofFather McGirr. Eventually he graduated
from Saint Peter School. Tolton’s Seminary Formation in Rome, Vatican
“The most deadly poison of our times is indifference,” says Saint Maximilian Kolbe. Racism continued
to impact Tolton’s educational trajectory as a young man. Having discerned his priestly vocation,
Tolton left America to study in a Roman seminary since no American Catholic seminaries accepted a
black man as a student. The African American seminarians trained in Rome, up until then, were sent
to Africa as missionary priests. Tolton, intending to become a missionary in Africa, studied African
history and languages. He also became fluent in Latin, Greek and the Italian language after attending
the Pontifical Urbaniana University. Later, his plan was scrapped by Cardinal Giovanni Simeoni who
said to Tolton, “America has been called the most enlightened nation in the world. We shall see if it
deserves that honour. If it has never before seen a black priest, it must see one now.” Because of the
Cardinal’s decision, America had the First African American Priest in the person of Tolton.
His Pastoral Life and Ministry:FromVatican to America
Rightly said so! “That which God commands is difficult and a burden. The way ahead is rough…”
Father Tolton spent three difficult years of pastoral ministry facing racial hostility including from a
white priest who used racial slurs to refer to him, and convinced the bishop to bar him from ministering
to white people. “It was said that I would be the only priest of my race in America and would not
likely succeed,” Pastor Tolton himself once wrote. He as pastor of Saint Joseph Church confronted
racism from some white Catholic priests who were upset that his Masses were attracting white
parishioners. He was pressured into transferring from Quincy to Chicago where he ministered to the
African Americans. He built their community at Saint Monica’s Church. He gained the attention of
the American Bishops after he was reassigned to Chicago where he developed anAfrican American

national parish which grew with hundreds of parishioners. Because of his service to the African
American community, he was widely covered in the American news. Several articles were written
about his fluency and sweet singing voice as well as his influence in the establishment of several
African American Catholic churches in Chicago. He died of heatstroke and uremia on the 9th of July
1897. He was buried in the priests’ lot in Saint Peter’s Cemetery as he had wished.
Pastor with ‘the smell of the sheep’
Augustine Tolton, a born slave and the first Catholic priest publicly known to be African American,
was declared Venerable by the Catholic Church on the 12thof June 2019. His life isnow “a profound
affirmation of God’s love for the Black creation.” His story represents the long and rich history
of African American Catholics who lived through troubling chapters and setbacks in history. Saint
Faustina of the Divine Mercy says, “A humble soul does not trust itself, but places all its confidence
in God.” Tolton’s humble life is a shining example of what Christian action and what patient suffering
is all about in face of life's incongruities. He, carrying his crosses in life heroically and convincingly,
overcame the odds of slavery and racism.Lessons from his early life as a slave, and the prejudice he
endured in becoming a priest because he was African American, are still relevant to the problems of
our day where neighbourhoods and churches evidence separations among race, rites, class and caste,
and the disturbances that erupt periodically from these social contradictions.
These seven sentences summarise the life and pastoral ministry of Tolton: 1) ‘Press forward, fear
nothing!’ 2) ‘When we pray, coincidences do happen!’ 3) ‘The silent tears of the mother never go
waste.’ 4) ‘When the going gets tough, the tough gets going!’ 5) ‘If God wants something to happen,
it will happen!’ 6) ‘It’s not the strong that prevail but the weak who give everything to the Lord!’ 7)
“Faith is to believe what you do not see; the reward of this faith is to see what you believe.”
Venerable Tolton’s work isn’t done! His life challenges us who are often victims of cultural captivity
of our times. Hecontinues to inspire all who work for harmony and peace. His life of suffering
inspires us to see the fresh Wounds of the Crucified and Risen Jesus on the victims of racial and social
injustice.

DOMINIC MASCARENHAS
PENTECOST
In Acts, the evangelist (Luke) presents a most beautiful word picture of the First Pentecost. After
Jesus’ death and even at the Resurrection the apostles were fearful and hid behind locked doors.
Even when Jesus appeared to them, they feared it is a ghost. Jesus therefore instructed them before
His Ascension; showing the fulfilment of Scripture. Even at the Ascension, initially the apostles
remained looking upward though Jesus had vanished from sight. They had to be reminded about
Jesus’ words. The disciples then hurried to the Upper Room in obedience to Jesus’ word and stayed
there in prayer. Mary, Jesus’ mother was with them. She, who had the most powerful experience in
all times of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, that made the Word of God become Man, now guided
them gently like her own children. She gently coaxed and taught them. The first day passed and the
second. Even seven days passed. Among Jews, seven was a ‘whole’ number, suggesting very many.
In seven days, God created the entire universe. The disciples perhaps wondered. What was wrong?
Did they miss something? The Holy Spirit whom Jesus promised had not yet arrived.
Perhaps, it took time for them to accept their many faults, seek pardon and repent. Repairing and
rebuilding always takes more time. But in reality, God was planning something greater and grander
and more spectacular than even the first creation (Genesis). He was sending the Holy Spirit. He had
a new creation in mind. Mama Mary was there, guiding them with great love. To bring Jesus into the
world, she had to wait and ponder and pray nine months in travail; in comparison waiting nine days
in a room was nothing.
The Jewish feast of Pentecost dawned on that bright morning. After the morning preparations, the
apostles gathered again in prayer in the Upper Room. They were locked in. It was surely not fear, as
before. Perhaps they did not want anything to disturb them. From the skies suddenly came a sound
like a strong wind; a wind that threatened to drive everything away. The tightly shut windows flung
open with that mighty wind. Everyone could clearly experience the sound and the wind. Then, the
tongues of fire came. This mighty blaze, this burning fire was like nothing they ever saw before. It
burns away that which is sin and not of God. But even more, it causes the heart to burn with love and
a desire for God. It suddenly parted and rested on everyone. Most depictions, show the Holy Spirit
falling on their heads (the fire of the Holy Spirit cleanses our minds, our thoughts, and emotions).
The Holy Spirit entered deep within. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit.
Suddenly that scared assembly was not the same. They, who were afraid even to whisper, began to
loudly praise God. Some perhaps in all their lives had never travelled more than a hundred kilometers;
but now they suddenly spoke in tongues; in languages of lands they never visited. People, who came
from there for the feast, understood them perfectly. Peter, who thrice betrayed Jesus in the Temple
premises not many days ago, now went and proclaimed Jesus even in the Temple. The man whom
even a maidservant’s accusation caused him to be fearful, now went straight into the Temple and
accused the high priests and others as ‘murderers’ of Jesus. The Holy Spirit can transform us beyond
our wildest imaginations.
Holy Spirit, You are welcome in our midst. Omnipotent Father of mercy and grace, You are
welcome in our midst.

FAMILY
JENNIFER DAS
In the past few years, the meaning of the “family” has might change a bit as the thoughts have been
influenced. Not to blame the reality called life, but it’s more like giving credit to it for this. All these
years since our childhood, we are asked to call the people with whom we are related with the same
DNA our said to be our only family. But the essence to it was given by the experiences we have
had with different people in our lives, the moments of at most joy,one of the best memories that we
makeare mostly with the people we met in our journey outside our family.
It is so amazing that we all have someone other than our family with whom we feel like home even
when we are not in it. To me, ‘to feel like home’ is not just an expression, it is a person. A person who
reminds you every single time that you are not alone. You are and will always be taken care of. This
person’s presence makes you comfortable even in strange places. He/she makes you enjoy your life
better and what not? Some of us are lucky to have more than one person like this, and to me these
beautiful souls are the true family for us.
We may not get to choose among whom we will born but the family that we made with the world by
making friends- one by one are must be counted and should be equally respected as family too. Some
of you may agree and some may not but the truth is, it is difficult for a human to survive without
family. It’s not about the members in it but it is about the connection that we share. Connection is
what that keeps us all stick together for better and for worse which in return makes our survival a bit
easy; as we always have each other’s back. We never left anyone behind.
Do you know many of us who are living with their families, having the best of everything what a
family has to offer yet they feel alone? They feel pain. They got anxious and stressed quickly than
others. This pain can be so intense that you can observe it as heartache gradually becoming the
bodyache and the person may develop anxiety or depression and other health issues. All this because
of the breakage in the connection within the family between each other. You may not take it seriously
but those who are struggling with this knows what I am saying.
The connection that we share with other human being is important. The feeling of belongingness is
very vital for us. Understand the role and the love of a family which is irreplaceable. You may think
you don’t need it but eventually you will fall for it. You will not make it, if you still continue to take
your family for granted. The bond the love that we share is not just a unique wireless connection. It is
in fact so magical that it can literally fill your life with more rainbows and sunshine with lesser clouds
and make you content. So just take care of your family and give them love and remind yourself every
day that you should always be grateful for them.

Earth Day Celebration

Earth Day is an annual event celebrated around the world on April 22nd to demonstrate support for
environmental protection. Earth Day brings people closer to the planet as they are directly or indirectly
initiated into the responsibility they have towards it. For the first time, the earth day was celebrated
in the year 1970 and the creator and founder of this day was John Mac Connell. He proposed a day
to honour the earth. This year, the world and we, the Rosarians celebrated our 52nd anniversary day.
Each year, this day is assigned a different theme or area of focus. This year's theme is "Invest in
our Planet" We celebrate Earth Day to bring awareness about conserving earth in the society and
especially among the young generation to utilize the resources on the earth in a proper way. The
program started by planting the saplings of trees with our name and watering it everyday for helping
the nature was followed by the speech given by Mr Antony for spreading the knowledge, about why
we need to celebrate this day and he explained that we should try and plant trees, keep wet waste and
dry waste separate to make way for easy decomposition. We should try to implement the rule of 3 R's,
that is re-use, re-cycle and reduce. After that, class 8 students represented a mind-blowing mime and
gave a clear message and showcased the importance of trees in everybody's life.
The principal Sr. AmalaVincy addressed the students and shared her views Let's care for our earth,
save the green and do everything that we can do to save it for the future. Let us promise ourselves
to plant one tree every year and we will have a much greener and happier planet to live on. It is our
responsibility to hand over the earth in a healthier form to our coming generation and she also showed
her love by kissing the earth with staff. Earth is God's best gift to us was the topic for constructive
activities like poster making, and slogan writing. Those activities gave the students platform to
showcase their artistic, and creative skills and their love for the earth.

Installation of blessing of Mary Ward's Statue

Statues are important part of our historic environment and can teach lessons about past and can
motivate usfor our future. Most statues are erected to remind us of a significant event and honour
the contributions of a particular person to society. There are many statues of personalities such as
martyrs, spiritual leaders, freedom fighters and many more. Keeping the above in mind, as part
of Swatch Bharat Abhiyan NCC directorate directed the schools to adopt two statues of historical
importance for the NCC cadets of the school and entrusted the upkeep to the cadets. St. Mary’s
Senior Secondary School adopted two statues as a part of this project. A marble statue of Jesus with
children and a statue of Mother Mary Ward, the foundress of the C.J. / Loreto Congregation. Statue of
Jesus was already in the school garden. However, the statue of Mary Ward was newly erected in the
garden on 2nd May in the presence of the NCC cadets.Mary Ward is one of the pioneers of education
and brought about positive changes in the society during the 16th century and her legacies are carried
on to the younger generation through the C.J. / Loreto sisters. Our manager Rev. Fr. Jose T.J. blessed
the statue and officially installed it in our school garden. Everyone paid homage to Mother Mary
Ward by offering rose petals to the statue. The entire event looked glorious and the C.J. Sisters of our
school felt honoured by the presence of their foundress in the school. NCC in-charge Ms. Santulata
thanked the school management for getting the statue erected in our campus for their upkeep as part
of the NCC project. - Anjali Thomas
