Kristie’s Career Plan

My primary career interest is being a film director.

I define myself as a Media sixth form student currently studying for an Btec extended diploma in level 3
media. In these 2 years, I have gained creativity by working with other students. This has opened my eye
to different varieties of art in photography and film that have inspired me and my own projects. I have
also increased my creativity in this course by telling stories through writing original screenplays and
producing short films with them. While producing these short films I have developed communicational
skills by working with actors to ensure that my vision is brought to life. In addition, I have obtained
technological expertise by learning how to utilize Adobe Photoshop and InDesign for my photography
projects to make them look professional. I also know how to operate film equipment, such as a Canon
DSLR and a tripod to carry out my short films and finally Final Cut to piece and edit my film projects.

Now, I am a sixth form student in my second year finishing up and working for my Btec extended
diploma in level 3 media, this entry level that I am working for will open a place for me to go to
university. I am continuing with my media route and planning to take a Contemporary Media Practice
course with BA honours 3-year full-time course in university.

My SMART goal is to improve and expand on my creativity when producing film shots, this will enhance
my film scenes with dramatics and emotion, enticing the audience which will impact me in the long term
as more people will view my films when I become a qualified film director. I plan to do this SMART goal
in my free time this summer by creating short films and editing them on Final Cut on my computer after
I finish my Btec extended diploma in level 3 media. For inspiration, I will also spend a lot of time
watching films to figure out what works and understand what went into making each scene. The only
barrier to my goal is getting people to be in my short films, as it is the summer and people are busy. To
defeat this barrier, I will plan filming days before and make my chosen actors mark those dates
beforehand, so no one bails out.

Another SMART goal is that I would like to develop my communicational skills as this will be good
practice for working in all production phases with different crew members in each type of production.
This will be achieved when I start creating other films in my future Contemporary Media practice course,
there will be more professional equipment and crews to delegate and utilize to produce and bring my
visions of the concept of my films to life. The only barrier to this goal is that some members of the crew
may not be well timed or civil, which will be a challenge consigning a member in their specific
production departments, affecting my visions of how my film should display. To defeat this barrier, I will
set out one-to-one meetings with each crew member and see if their skills and personal qualities are
suitable for a healthy production camp.

Finally, my other SMART goal is to be efficient and punctual in working around given deadlines. When I
take my university course, I will practice being prompt by doing given assignments/projects when I first
get it. The only barrier to this goal is that I may be disorganized which will reduce time that I have
available for my assignments/projects. To defeat this barrier, I will start a journal and plan out my day,
so I may be organised and productive to complete each assigned project.

I am assured I am where I want to be in order to achieve being a film director. I know this because I have
had the motivation to act on my passion in film directing by joining film clubs to open my curiosity and
critique on how scenes are made and put together. I have volunteered to be a tour guide for 2 years in
my secondary school for their year 6 opening evenings, administering the year 6 pupils and their parents
around the school. In addition, I gave talks in primary school assemblies on the big transition from
primary school to secondary school and its expectations. Furthermore, I have also conducted and
choreographed group dances from year 7 to 9. This all has given me experience in directing people and
assigning them to do different parts so that my vision and art pieces may come to life. In year 9, this led
me to choose GCSE media for my GCSE’s and in year 11 I passed all my 8 subjects and got an 8(A) in
media. This opened the opportunity for me to do Btec media for 2 years in College Sixth Form, which I
am currently studying in my last year for my Btec level 3 media extended diploma.

The goal I want to achieve by the end of this month is to focus on completing my last unit for my Btec
extended media level 3 diploma, which is producing 3 knife crime adverts on Adobe Photoshop. I’ll
achieve this goal by drawing my 3 mockups for my 3 pictures for my advert, then I’ll take my 3 pictures
and edit each one on Adobe Photoshop into an advert, using titles and statistics for message appeal. I’ll
also need to screenshot each step I take when creating each of these adverts, so that I can evaluate each
one of them on PowerPoint. The only barrier I might is procrastination and health appointments. The
goal I want to achieve at the end of the year is to increase my learning and gain communicational and
technical skills in working in groups to create films and how to operate high tech equipment in
university.

A milestone of mine is to get all distinctions in my A level qualifications on A level results day. In order to
achieve this goal, I need to get on target on finishing my advert unit to the best of my ability. Another
milestone of mine is to gain important skills in my future university course, such as networking in my
course film workshops and doing placement in directing in my second university year. Finally, another is
to gain transmissional skills while working with other students in film and other art projects.
