ELECTROLYTIC ETCHING

(As per ASM Vol-9/ ASTM E 407)

1) Prepare adequate amount required Etching solution (Specified in the test procedure)
in the bowl.
2) Keep the Cathode (SS Strip with black wire) attached in the solution.
3) Specimen should be initially polished.
4) Attach the sample to be etched to the anode(Red wire)
5) The Cathode should be near the specimen but should not directly touch the
specimen (Avoid short circuit).
6) Attach Anode (Red wire) & cathode (black wire) to the power supply.
7) Plug in the 220V supply and switch “ON”. Adjust the voltage accordingly (Specified in
the Standard test method).
8) Withdraw the specimen from the clamp .Air dry the specimen & see under the
microscope.
