There are many ways to form new words. First, you can
JUST I(in)justice, jussive, justiciary, join two or more existing words or word-parts together.
(un)justifiable, (un)justifiably, If you join two words, you get a compound - for
justification, (un)justifie d, justify, instance, hair and brush make the compound hairbrush.
just-in-tim e , (un)justly, unjust; adjudge, If you add an affix to a word, you get a 'derivative' - for
adjudicate, adjudication, adjudicator, instance, un- + pack becomes unpack. There is also a
adjure, (e xtra judicia l, ill-judged, injure, particular sort of compound that has become popular
(un)injured, injurious, (in)jury, over the past 150 years, known as a blend. To make a
(in)judicious(ly), judg(e)m ent(al), blend, you join the front part of one word to the end of
judicature, judicially, judiciary, juridical, . another word - for instance, motor and hotel blended
jurisdiction(al), jurisprudence, jurist, together to make motel.
juror, ,Li-v(wo)man, misjudge(ment),
prejudge, prejudice(d), prejudicial, The second way is to put an existing word to a new use.
unprejudiced; abjure, conjure(r), Mostly this just involves a change in meaning - for
conjuring, conjuror, perjure(r), perjury instance, buff 'an enthusiast' (as in 'a film buff') comes
from buff the name of a brownish-yellow colour
©
(originally volunteer firefighters in New York, who
needed to be very keen to do it for no pay, used to we ar
buff-coloure d uniforms). But you can also put a word to
a new grammatical use - for instance, you can use a
© (flam e-)throw er, overthrow(n), noun as a verb (e.g. to bicycle, to wolf). This process is
throwaway, throwback, throw-in, generally known as conversion.
thrown; threadbare, threads, threaded,
The third thing you can do is to shorten an existing word.
thre adworm
There are various ways of going about this. You can
F R O NT I affront, beachfront, confront(a tion(al)), remove a part of the word (usually the end, e.g. exam,
effrontery, forefront, frontage, photo). This is known technically as clipping. One
fnontaKly), frontbencher, front-end, particular sort of shortening is to remove a suffix (e.g.
frontier(sm an), frontispiece, front-load, d e struct from d e struction). This is called
frontman, front-of-house, front-page, ba ck-form ation. An extreme form of shortening is to
front-whe el, full-frontal, oceanfront, leave only the first letter. A sequence of such letters is
riverfront, seafront, shopfront, called an initialism (e.g. BBC, EU, Y W C A ). And if you
storefront, upfront, waterfront pronounce the sequence as an ordinary word, it
Q UIE T i(ac)quiescence, (ac)quiescent, becomes an acronym (e.g. AID S, N A T O , R O M).
d i s q u i e t ( i n g ) , quieten, quietism, quietist, Finally, a tiny proportion of new English words are simply
quietress, quieìuík:. quietus. made up out of thin air (e.g. nylon, gnome, hobbit,
H H H unquiet; acquit(tal); quits, ouiller; sup erc a lifra gilistic e xpialidocious).
