CHAPTER 4
AN ANALYTICAL STUDY OF THE TEXT AND MUSIC OF SELECTED
COMPOSITIONS IN HINDUSTANI RĀGA-S IN SINHALESE LANGUAGE
The Sinhala language is highly influenced by Sanskrit and Pali. It is important to note
that Grammar Sinhala also has a letter for each sound for example, Ka, Kha, Ga, and Gha.
It should be noted that the musicians of Srilanka, have retained and performed mainly
the Khayals that they learnt during their years of study in India. These have been faithfully
performed by them and taught in private and at various Institutions. In concerts the traditional
method of singing Khayal, Thumri Bhajan and Taranas has been followed meticulously. As
for the compositions which emerged during early 1950s, it could be said that devotional
songs with single stanzas or two, along with sthayi antara types also came into vogue. It can
be seen that some are of the devotional type pertaining to Gods like Sarasvati, Lord Ganesh,
the Lord of Katarāgama Muruga (a sacred shrine common to Hindus and Buddhists popularly
known as Kadirkama temple at the southern tip Sri Lanka), and Lord Gautama Buddha and
on Pattini Deiyo meaning Kannaki.
From 1947, the songs of the Sinhala movies became the adaptations of Indian film
songs. The Sinhalese songs which were broadcasted in radio Ceylon which were adopted
from Indian film songs gradually decreased with the emergence of film music directors in
Sinhala Cinema. In this chapter, some of the important music directors who have been trained
in Hindustani Classical music and who have also been pioneers in Sinhala Cinema as music
directors are taken up for study.

of singing is the first prahara of the night. The note R is the nyasa svara (halting note) svara
of rāga Hansadvani.

Ascending – Sa, Ri , Ga, Pa, Ni, Sa
Descending – Sa, Ni, Pa, Ga, Ri, Sa
Mukhyanga – Ga Pa Ni Pa Ga Ri, Ga Ri sa
Though the song is based on rāga Hansadvani, the composer has used shuddha
Dhaivat as a vivadi note in certain places in the song. In the notation the combinations of rāga
Hansadvani is highlighted. This is a combination in Sanskrit and it is in a style of addressing
Sarasvati, the Goddess of learning in a format of various names as a form of Salutation. The
general meaning of the song hails Saraswati as one who is sitting on the Lotus, receiver of
obeisance, compassionate victorious, songster, artist of full sweetness holding the Veena.

Observations
This is the most important Chapter of the research work where 30 compositions in
Sinhalese set to Hindustani rāgas are taken up for textual and musical analysis. The selection
114
has been done taking into account various genres, some being devotional songs like bhajans,
invocatory pieces and also rāga based film songs figuring in Sinhala films. All the 30
compositions have been given with notations. The selected songs have been given in the
Appendix II in the audio/video format.
The close similarity between Sanskrit and Sinhalese with regard to usage and
grammatical elements have been discussed e.g a song which is in praise of Goddess
Saraswathi composed by P.V. Nandasiri, it is interesting to note that it was featured in a film.
Some of the songs are in praise of Lord Buddha composed with devotional fervor.
