Overview
You will create a civilization based on the characteristics of civilization, and on research of ancient civilizations.
You will work either individually or in pairs. Should you choose partners, be wise with your choice. This your
final assignment and is worth 20% of your final grade. The expectation is you and your partner will
communicate throughout this assignment and any concerns will be brought to the teacher well in advance or as
soon as they arise. This must happen well ahead of your presentation date. There are no late presentations
allowed, as this is part of the requirement for the assignment.
You will work to create your own civilization based on your notes about the characteristics of the civilizations
noted above.
There will be time to work on this project during class, however, you may need to work on this outside of
class. Your project is due by the BEGINNING of school on TUESDAY JUNE 21, 2022. Presentations will
start that day.

Evaluation
This project is out of 100 points, with an 80-point rubric over content, 10-point presentation rubric, and
a 10-point self-evaluation rubric.
Stable Food Supply (Geography)
Civilizations need a stable supply of food. Societies can only thrive with plenty of food.
Domesticating animals and agriculture allowed civilizations to create a stable food supply.
Desert regions (Mines and Military base)- desert climate- hot, dry, summers
Farming region- April-June is monsoon season in our civilization- heavy rainfall, hot summers
(30 degrees Celsius), no winter
What physical features allow your civilization to grow crops and raise animals?
Located in between the rivers- have good water source + fertile soil
o The river overflows the crops- grow
o Provides fresh water to animals
Spring & summer year-round- crops won’t die, stable temperatures
What crops grow in your civilization? What animals are able to live in your civilization?
Crops: cotton, wheat, barely, peas, lentils, dates, peanuts, corn, soybeans (groundnuts)
Domestic Animals: Cattles, pigs, goats, chicken, horses, cats, dogs, deer
Government Structure
A civilization needs to have a government in order to structure rules and provide protection if
necessary. What does your civilization have?
What type of government has your civilization organized? Democracy? Dictatorship? Monarchy?
Oligarchy? Other? Who’s in charge?
How do the people in power get there? Are they born into it? Are they voted?
Bloodline- must belong into the immediate family of the current ruler (their children)
The ruler observes their children over the years, then chooses the most wise/suitable child
(regardless of gender) to become the heir
o The result is revealed when the chosen heir turns 18
o Normally, the king writes down 3 names in order- from most suitable to moderately
suitable
Believe the chosen heir (the wisest one) possesses a fraction of the god Alyan
Does your civilization have an army or military forces? If so, how are they organized?
Individuals who misuse their social status will be revoked of their social status
o Ex. If a scribe misuses their status, Monarch will strip their job away from them
Rewards for citizens in the civilization based on the extra tasks they complete- equity
o Ex. Anyone who volunteers/does the task willingly for the Monarch receives rewards
(man willingly go to war, family gets rewarded)
If there are evident of conning, businesses will be put into trial + pay a “fee” based on severity
of the punishments
o Ex. If businesses conned a citizen, the Council will be expected to access of the
situation and take portion of their possession – again, Monarch will take final decision
Social Structure
Civilizations have a complex organization, or social structure. This is controlled through different jobs and social levels (or
status).
What jobs are available in your civilization? Make a list of jobs and their descriptions in the space below.
- Miners – Includes going to work from the city to the minefields at 8 AM. They have a lunch break from 12:00 -
1:30 every day. Responsibilities include mining underground, bringing all findings up to the surface, using tools to
extract ores. Hours are from 8 AM – 4 PM. (lower class)
- Farmers – Includes living in farmhouses near their crops and fields. Must farm all types of things and send it to the
civilization, keeping 25% of it for themselves and sending the rest to the city. Responsibilities include keeping track
of harvest, watering (as it is dry), and giving the best product possible. (commoners)
- Architects/builders – architects (rich people) are responsible for designing all structures of the civilization. They
have their own worktimes but are responsible for completing projects to them on time. Builders will build the
projects and work from 9-5 every day. They are responsible for sourcing materials and working to finish structures
as soon as possible – may paint, cut, measure and build. (commoners)
- Traders – Includes working on the docks and taking in imports, sending out exports and keeping track of
everything. May repair boats as well. Work form 9-5 daily. Are responsible for collecting needed items for trade
and monitor all traders and trades that are happening. (commoners)
- Other jobs include monarch workers, soldiers, entertainers including dancers, singers, musicians, market workers,
and teachers
- All jobs are organized for people in the social class linked to it – weekends are two days per day (everyone is off)
but you may choose to work for extra pay.
What education is offered in your civilization? Is school required? How do people learn how to do their jobs?
- All students must be educated and complete schooling before they may choose to work. Depending on money, each
student will have a variety of careers to choose from, from there social class jobs list. They may only choose a job
from there however, if they have the money, they can choose another job from a different social class. You choose
the career near the end of your school career
- Once chosen, you do core classes that are required and take other classes linked to the job so that you learn more
about how it works before doing the hands-on work.
- After finishing the classes linked to the career, you will take on an apprenticeship with people you are assigned to
and work for 2 weeks with them to see how the job is and put your skills to the test
- You may decide to chose another but will have to do classes and an apprenticeship linked to the new career chosen
- Prices will reduce for lower class and commoners – schooling will be different
- Rich and farmers will have some of the best education
- Monarchs’ children will have private classes and tutoring and the best possible education – must learn how to
manage a civilization for job and cannot become any other worker
Explain how your economy works. What are your imports/exports? Are there rich or poor? How do people become
rich? Who are the poor and why are they poor? Will you have slaves? Are your leaders also the richest?
- Imports: wood, silk, cotton seeds or other plants, certain spices (not found here), and paper material
- Exports: clay, small amounts of natural resources- gold, silver, ebony, ivory and incense, clay pottery, jewelry, and
spices (rosemary, oregano, mint), dyes for clothing
- Classes include monarch and family, upper class individuals, farmers (very significant and well respected so they
have own class), commoners (tradesmen, soldiers, teachers etc.), and slaves
- People become rich through inheritance, field of work (high class – better job), through illegal or personal ways
- The poor are typically slaves and the entire group of commoners – poor because of job availability and
specialization, not born into rich families/inheritance or criminals/slaves/foreign
- There are slaves – typically work for monarch but are treated well with good living quarters, food, and clothing
- High class people may choose to get their own slaves as well – must treat them well no matter what
- The richest people are the monarch and his family, but people born into inheritance or have made a lot of money
through other ways are also some of the richest in society
- Farmers are one of the most important and respected workers in entire civilization – get own home, good money
and get to keep a percentage of good produced
Religious System
All civilizations need a religious system. This includes a set of beliefs, God(s), and places of worship.
What stories/beliefs do the people in your civilization have about the following topics:
All the gods were trapped in the underworld by Shudu, the god of evil, started to explore
Gods found land, but it was separated/shambles and is floating around outer space, so Naia
Alyan then build the civilization along with Naia, they both become protectors of Elyan
Alyan and Naia birthed Sunnia, Yanna, and Dia to manage different parts of Kya
After life?
Believe in afterlife
Believe that your fate in afterlife is based on the amount of good deeds vs bad deeds you’ve done in your
present life regardless of social status
The god Dia will determine your fate in afterlife- has a book where he kept everyone’s good and bad
deeds
Four levels of afterlife- Puna, Iuna, Kuna Juna,
o Juna- Monarchs and Heroes
o Kuna- Individuals who committed good deeds for the most of their life
o Iuna- Individuals who didn’t do too much good or bad deeds- mediocre
o Puna- Criminals, Sinners, Murders, anyone who committed an extreme crime/too much crimes
Who do the people in your civilization worship as god(s)? Will there be one or more than one? Describe
him/her/them.
1000+ deities that is worshipped, but the main five is listed below:
Alyan- god of universe and wisdom, protector of Elyan
Naia- goddess of Kya, the protector of Elyan
Sunnia- god of Sun and sky
Yanna- goddess of Water and rain
Maia – god of Mountains and precious metals
Dia- god of death, funerals, afterlife
Where do the people in your civilization worship? What buildings do they build and how are they built?
Worship is located inside the Monarch’s palace once per week- worship times is based on social class (so
from the top of the social class to the bottom)
o Practiced group worship, everyone in the social class gathered together and pray to the 6 major
gods
The interior of the temple is painted green and white, representing nature and purity
Each statue of a deity is pained gold to represent elegance and richness
Highly Developed Culture
All civilizations must have a highly developed culture including the arts like painting, architecture, and music. Culture is
a way to show what a civilization values, or what is important to them.
What holidays/celebrations do your citizens have? Why do they celebrate these days?
- Alyan day – where we celebrate Alyan, the god of universe, wisdom, and protector of Elyan. Worships available at
religious sites around city. Shrines being set up in houses are very common – worship there as well. This is
celebrated to honor our god and to make sure they are pleased and happy. Offerings are placed on home shrines and
at holy sites in order for them to accept us.
- Queen Elishia the 7th day – eat cake, celebrate our monarch by offering gifts. The monarch has agreed to lower
prices of goods for that day as well to show appreciation towards citizens. Workday will be cut in half instead of a
full workday – not for market workers but they will get paid a little extra. It is celebrated to appreciate and thank our
monarch that runs the whole civilization. It is also a time for appreciating citizens and that is why the monarch
lowers prices for the day and cut workdays in half.
- Elyan day – everyone gets a day off work and celebrates in the streets. Wear green, white, and gold as those are our
colors. Parades and festivals are happening all around the city and in all houses on the day everyone gets off with
music playing and everyone dancing. This is done to celebrate and remember the day that our civilization was
founded and the time after where it was established to be the huge civilization we see today.
- Others include job appreciation day, funerals and birthdays, religious days, days of celebration for ALL gods and so
much more
What will the buildings in your civilization look like? What will they be made out of?
- Buildings will all have a set colour of white and light green accents are for farmers, dark green for higher class,
green for the commoners and mix of the three for the monarch and gold is used only for the monarch’s palace
- Typically, farmhouses will be square, one level, some colour and two walls at the backside that leads to farmland –
roofs have “wheat” on them to cool them down from hot sun
- Commoners will have rectangular houses that are three levels – can choose to pay for one level, two, or all – one
central staircase that goes through all levels and windows (similar to a modern-day apartment)
- Rich people will have two square structures put together. Green accents are located on the structures. Domes are on
the roof and painted dark green
- Monarch’s house has different green colors, and lots of gold. There are multiple structures, a courtyard with a
fountain, stairs that lead up, and raised land so it is the highest land in the whole civilization. There are gates around
the fountain as well and greenery located near it
- Farmhouses and rich people’s houses are made from brick and plaster, commoners from plaster and mud, and
Monarch’s house is made from stone and brick. They are mainly painted white to keep cool during hot and dry
weather. There are accents of colors on all structure types
What types of art and music do your citizens have? What materials do they use, and what style? Why?
- For art = gold and silver from the mine is used to create statues for the monarch (only them)
- The rest of rocks can be used to create statues for anyone who can afford it
- Clay from mine is used to make pots/dishes – potterers can buy material and create things to sell at markets
- Wood is imported and that is used for creating instruments (harp/lyre) to play and create music
- The ores from the mine are used as we are rich in ores and all materials that comes from there ranges from
expensive to very cheap – it is also sturdy for the things we make
- Wood is used because it is strong for creating instruments (harp/lyre) to use and used from our imports as we do not
have a lot of wood in our civilization
- Elyan Architectural style – includes intricate curves and straight and clean lines with touches of green, white, or
gold colors
What clothing do your citizens wear? Why?
- Light and flowy clothing as it is hot and dry for the most part
- Colored clothing for those who can afford it as it is more expensive than white colored clothing
- Linen is what the majority are made from – silk is for the monarch and those who can afford it
- Natural pigments are mixed with river water to dye the clothing into different colors
- Wrap arounds made from thicker materials are in the market during winter as it is cold
- One-piece tunics with arm and head holes are made and can be accessorized with belts and wrap arounds
- Monarch’s clothing has designs and colors to it and only they are allowed to have designs on their fabrics
- Shoes include very minimal shoe wear from imported wood and wrapped around fabric or even barefoot – jewelry
made from ores from mines (expensive)
Advances in Technology
All civilizations create new forms of technology (tools or inventions.) These advances prove that a civilization not
only developed, but also provided contribution to surrounding area and future generations.
What tools do the people in your civilization use to get their work done?
- Miners – tools made from rocks from the mine itself and wooden handles from imported wood, this way we can
mine for material easier and faster
- Teachers – use material similar to paper and reeds with ink, this way they can teach classes better, and students
can have records of what they learned that day in class so they can refer back to them and study if needed
- Builders – make structures with the bricks from clay, mud that is mixed with water and dirt. For the higher class
and monarch, stone is used as it is much stronger and sturdier. Gold is used for the monarchs and temples only
as it is a very expensive material to use a lot of.
- Architects – use paper material and reeds with ink to draw ideas and sketches for future structures and
monuments. This way they can keep it as a record of what it must look like and how all measurements and
features look like
- Traders – use small boats for importing and exporting materials during trades. There are also docks by the
water where the boats typically stay for the most part. Some farmers or others may choose to have personal
boats that they can purchase, however, depending on the wood and size – they can be very expensive.
- Market sellers – they use carts made out of clay and wood to roll around. The carts all have wheels, and they
roam the streets and houses to sell their goods. Their “parking” station and where they spent most of their time
is by the dock where imports/exports happen while trading.
- Farmers – use irrigation systems and water from the nearby flowing river to give water to their crops on their
property. This makes it easier to water crops and use our natural resources for better farming.
- Wheel– this makes it easier for market carts to move around and for the transportation of the miners from the
city centre to the mines that are located on the outskirt. They would be made from a mixture of clay and water,
then sundried to make sturdy. You can find ones made from stone or plated with metals. Wood is another
option.
- Paints and Dyes – these are made from natural elements and water to create beautiful and long-lasting dyes and
paints. Dyes are used for changing the appearance of clothing and paints are used to give structures a nicer look.
It adds nice colors to everything rather than keeping everything plain and simple.
- Simple Containers and Dishes – these are made from a mixture of clay and water than sundried to harden. The
dishes consist of flat boards as plates, raised edges for bowls and containers, and cups. They can be found at the
market and are affordable for all. Ones made from metal are most expensive and only for people who can afford
it. The Monarch and family use gold plated ones instead – no one else can purchase and use.
What have the people in your civilization done to make their lives easier?
- Stone tools: to mine for metals easier and faster rather than using bare hands which makes it safer for miners
and makes work a lot easier on them so that they do not burn out after hours of working.
- Irrigation systems: from our natural source of rivers to provide water for crops and create better crops all year
round.
- Dishes: to store material and food for later on without it going bad and to use for eating more cleaner and
making clean up faster and better.
- Scrolls: to keep records of everything important needed and to have it for long periods of time as the ink will
not fade from the paper material quickly.
- Location: farming and mining is located towards the outskirts of the civilization as it is less busy, and workers
can get more done quicker with a short distance by carts with wheels for transporting and the city centre is
located more by the water for easier import, exports, and trades. The monarch’s place is the central monument
with everything else located around it. This layout is easier for all and divides up the large land better.
- Boats: made so that importing and exporting is quicker and faster. It is also a great way to get to another place
quickly and even escape the civilization for whatever reason.
Written Language
All civilizations must have a highly developed written language. The beginning of history means the beginning of
writing. The first known language was cuneiform, created by the Sumerians. An example of writing can also be
pictographs.
