The Emulator Software is normally loaded into the users PC through a downloaded file from the RFL
website at www.rflelect.com. The following sections describe the installation of the software, its
operation, and examples of web page configuration. Users should have a copy of the GARD System
Instruction Manual for reference; this can also be downloaded from the RFL website.
• The software is normally downloaded from the RFL website, the path is
//rflelect.com/products/protection, click the software button at the bottom of the page. The
website will have the latest Emulator version as well as many older versions. See page 6 for
matching a GARD "Whole Chassis Configuration" with the correct Emulator Software.
• Before loading the software make a working copy, use the working copy to load the software
and these instructions into your PC.
• As you are installing the software, several lists of choices will appear on the screen. Read the
instructions below each list carefully before making a choice.
Software Installation
1. Run the downloaded file.
2. In most cases, a setup window will appear on the screen similar to the one shown below.
On installation, when the following screen is displayed click the “Change” button.
It is recommended that the software be located at the root directory, however this is not
mandatory.
3.b Navigate to (C:) and create a folder named "GARD 8000 Emulator Version xx" where xx is the
emulator version.
4. From this point on the software will prompt you to enter information it requires to complete the
installation. When the installation is complete the following icon will appear on your desktop.
5. The above is the starting point for using the GARD 8000 Emulator. Clicking on the icon will
display the following dialog box.
6. The dialog box shown will display the Emulator version you have just installed, any other
versions that are resident on your computer will also be listed in the pull-down menu. If you do
not have a copy of the Emulator Instructions, select “Display Emulator Manual” from the
options pull-down menu and print out a copy. Checking the “Logic Configuration Generator”
tab will display the following dialog box.
7. In the example above the four files that make up the GARD Logic are selected from the host
computer. Note, it is recommended that these four files be selected; however the .pdf and .dsn
files are not mandatory. Check the “Generate Logic Zip” button to create a zip file of the
above.
9. The user can load an archived whole chassis configuration file from his/her computer.
10. Click the “Browse” button and select the required file.
11. Once the file is displayed as shown above, the “Extract Configuration Version” button can be
clicked to display the correct Emulator version in the “Release” field.
13. A screen similar to the one shown on the following page will appear.
Note 1.
Please see “User Notes” at the end of these instructions in the rare event that this dialog is
displayed when trying to run the GARD Emulator
Note 2.
Also see “User Notes” for details on resetting the password to factory defaults.
In the screen shown above type ‘Admin’ in the User Name and Password boxes.
Note that the above is case sensitive and must be typed as shown. The following web page will
appear.
From the Pull Down Menus select ‘Settings’ > ‘System Labels and Triggers’ > ‘Configure Card
Types’ the following webpage will appear.
After clicking ‘Home’, the 3U Chassis Home Page will display as shown below.
The background color of the web page indicates the type of page you are on as follows:
From the ‘Settings’ pull down menu select ‘System Labels and Triggers’ > ‘Configure Card Types.’
The following webpage will display.
After the chassis has been configured click ‘Save’ to save your settings. Individual modules can now
be configured. If you are at the ‘Home’ page select ‘Settings’ > ‘Chassis Configuration.’ And click on
the module to be configured as shown below.
The following web page will display. The Input Card in Slot #1 can now be configured.

Typically, the module web pages require information that has to be entered and boxes that have to be
checked. Enter the Logic Start Bit in the ‘Start of Logic Range’ box (3 – 506). Each of the 6 Inputs
can be named and enabled. ‘Module Enable’ and ‘Module Disable’ will save the settings, however in
a real GARD chassis these commands also activate or deactivate the selected I/O modules. Click
‘Save’ to save the settings.
Careful consideration must be given when entering logic bit settings. Improper settings will result in a
unit that does not operate properly.
The pull down menus will give the user a number of choices for settings in the GARD Emulator.
Although different in appearance, they all have information that has to be entered and boxes that
require checking. Detailed information on the web page displayed can be obtained from the ‘Help’
pull down menu as shown on the following page. It is recommended that users new to the GARD
Emulator utilize this resource.
Before proceeding ensure that the Emulator is set for the correct chassis configuration, 3U or 6U.
From the ‘Settings’ pull down menu select ‘File Operations’, the following webpage will appear.
Select ‘Send File to GARD 8000, the ‘Whole Chassis Configuration.’ will be the default, select the file
and click ‘Send.’ Once loaded modules can be configured as previously described.
Select ‘Whole Chassis Configuration.’ Click ‘Save,’ follow the standard dialog of the browser to save
the file to the Hard Drive.
At this stage the user must change the file name. There should be no spaces and the extension .zip
must remain.
These saved files can now be used to update actual GARD units in the field. See Section 7.5 in the
GARD 8000 Instruction Manual for details.
3. Right click on the “defaults.cfg” file and select open with Wordpad or Notepad.
7. Open the GARD Emulator and type the following address: 127.0.0.1:6080
8. This procedure will bypass the default web browser “port 80” and should prevent error
messages from appearing.
Note 2.
When a whole chassis configuration file is loaded with a custom password, that password MUST be
used for all future logins to the GARD Emulator. The Emulator can be reset to the factory defaults
(default password) as shown on the following page. Note that this procedure will remove the whole
chassis configuration file.
