Crosby to acquire Kito

Lifting and rigging equipment

acquire Japanese hoist and
industrial crane manufacturer
Kito Corporation.
The deal reported to be worth
US$438 million will see Crosby
acquire all outstanding Kito
shares for JPY 2,725 (US$ 21.05)
per share. It is a premium of 64.3
per cent on the JPY 1,659 ($12.81)
closing price of Kito shares on 13
May. It will be a 61.0 % premium
on Kito’s three-month average
closing price, Crosby said.
Kito was started 90 years
ago, in 1932, and posted sales
of JPY 62,506 million ($483
million) in the 2021 financial year.

Group has announced its acquisition of fellow
tower crane business LaurentKeller in France.
Uperio said the addition of LaurentKeller,
based in Gerstheim, Alsace, will increase its Philippe Cohet,

Established in 1984, LaurentKeller SAS is a family-owned business
involved in sales, rental and service of tower cranes. The fleet
includes more than 45 tower cranes and there are 12 employees

AINSCOUGH CRANE HIRE lifted a new
footbridge into place in Leicester, United

steel superstructure into place.
The new bridge will provide enhanced

The cranes are a mix
of construction towers

contracts were signed
between 22 February and 6

Favelle Favco Berhad saw
its share price increase by
28 % on the back of the
announcement.
One of the tower crane
orders is from Marr
Contracting, to be delivered
by the middle of 2022 and
the other is for GA Caelli, to
be delivered by the end of
the year. Both companies are
based in Australia.
The offshore cranes
were ordered by SR Marine
Services in Malaysia and
Yinson Bergenia Production
which has offices in Malaysia,
Netherlands, Singapore,
Norway, Ghana, Nigeria and
Brazil. Deliveries are due in
the third quarter of 2022
and the second quarter of
2023, respectively.
Sany delivers 3,000
tonne crawler crane
Chinese manufacturer Sany has
delivered the first unit of its 3,000
tonne capacity crawler crane, the
SCC52000TM, for a power plant
construction project.
The double lattice boom giant
will be used to lift the dome at
Hualong One, a third-generation
nuclear power plant construction
project. In addition to dome lifts
and other big jobs at nuclear
power plants, the crane will
also be suitable for the large-
scale hoisting of vessels in
petrochemical plants, Sany said.
Sany said its SCC52000TM
combines 2,000 tonne and 1,600
tonne capacity crawler cranes. It
is tagged as the first “two-in-one”

nine companies removed from the list, mainly
due to a lack of recent data.
The other metric higher than last year
is the number of depots in the top 100
companies, up 1.46 %, or 22 more than
the year before. That’s close to one in four
companies having one more depot than they
did in 2021. Note that last year there were
fewer depots than in 2020.
HEADING DOWN
So, yes, everything else was down. Examples
include around 1,500 fewer employees, 1,000
fewer wheeled cranes and just 13 fewer
lattice boom cranes. Last year wheeled
mobiles were also down but lattice cranes

When you look at just the top 20
companies, the decline is more pronounced,
with everything down, especially the number
of wheeled cranes, by a whopping 13.87 %, or
around 1,500 units. A large proportion of this
is accounted for by Maxim in the USA having
slashed its wheeled mobile fleet size from
2,850 units last year to 1,750 in this year’s
IC100 table.
Maxim’s fleet reduction is reflected in its
move from third in the table to 8th. Almost
totally opposite to that is fellow USA-based
crane owner Buckner, now replacing Maxim
in third place, having gained four from 7th last
year. One to watch is BMS from Denmark.
This year it has gained another place, putting
it in 5th. Just one place, I hear you say, but it
should be noted that just five years ago it was
in 16th place. Giant steps indeed.
While BMS is now one of the top six
companies in the "millionaires club" of the
IC100, it still needs to more than triple its total
to match the leader of the table, Mammoet,
enjoying a widened gap between it and its
nearest rival Sarens in second place. ■

VITAL FOR HALL TRUCKING
Adaptability and flexibility in configuration
were key requirements for Hall Trucking
when it chose Goldhofer’s new Highway
Trailer P12 Plus.
The company based in Wyoming, USA,
needed to handle a wide range of oversize
loads, including crane components.
The P12 Plus can combine up to 12
axle lines and one or two intermediate
bogies. It offers a longer load deck and
flexible payload, the manufacturer said.
Configuration is possible as a semi-trailer,
trailer or steerable dolly for long loads. It
allows all types of vehicles and equipment
to be transported more economically, the
German manufacturer said.
Jeff Hall, owner of Hall Trucking,
commented, “With this trailer we are
extremely flexible and can cover all
transport tasks in the energy industry.”
How to put hydraulic
equipment on electric trucks
Palfinger, ZF and Mercedes-Benz Trucks have
developed a system to allow installation of
hydraulic cranes and other equipment on
electric trucks.

Nooteboom with
hydraulic widening
Dutch manufacturer Nooteboom has added
a semi trailer with hydraulic widening to its
range for sale in Europe.
The OSD-73-04(S) is designed for
transporting large construction and other
machines weighing up to 47 tonnes. Crawler
track machines up to 2.9 metres wide and 5
metres long can be accommodated.
It is a four axle trailer available with a
single extendable load deck and two of the
axles are self-steering. Hydraulic widening
was added to meet increasing demand for
this convenient feature. It allows the width
of the load area to be increased from 2,540
to 3,210 mm. Control is via a push button and
at the back of the truck’s diesel engine. This
latest development is to efficiently electrify
PTOs. Mercedes set up the eWorX all-in-one
solution developed by ZF to run a Palfinger
skiploader in one of its eActros electric
trucks. Crane installations will follow later.

COMETTO ECO1000
When the Peters Group in Itterbeck,
Germany, needed a transporter at short
notice Cometto delivered.
Henri Maatmann, Peters Group
managing director, needed to move steel
railway bridge components around the
company’s yards during manufacturing
and also on site during installation.
Cometto’s solution was a 4-axle
Eco1000 self propelled transporter with
a 170 tonne payload. A clincher was that it
was available from stock. Maatmann and

appreciation
E d Bernard accepted the gavel from
Kevin Johnston at April’s SC&RA Annual
Conference in Washington DC, USA, and
began his year as president of the Specialized
Carriers & Rigging Association.
It is a professional achievement Bernard
doesn’t take lightly.
He is president at Ontario, Canada-based
Precision Specialized, a specialized transport
service provider. Born in Toronto he grew up
in Prince Edward Island. Like so many SC&RA
members, his early influences were his two
hard-working parents, including his truck-
driving father.
A love of trucking and logistics eventually
found Bernard in a truck of his own, which
went on to become a company that won four
SC&RA Hauling Jobs of the Year.
Quick to listen and offer feedback,
and even quicker to share a laugh and a
handshake, Bernard’s path to the SC&RA
presidency was built on a foundation of hard
work, mutual respect and shared experience.
Here he discusses his journey and how it
led to a place embodying the significance of
both his professional accomplishments and
personal successes.

I did. My father was a truck driver and I grew
up with him, driving all over the place. He

AT WHAT POINT DID YOU KNOW
YOU MIGHT WANT TO ENTER THE

Well, I ended up moving back to Toronto
after Saint Mary’s University in Halifax (Nova
Scotia) and got involved with a little bit of
everything until I got a job driving a garbage
truck. From there I got into sales and, in 1994,
I bought my first big truck.
TELL US ABOUT THE SALES PIECE AND
HOW IT LED TO BIGGER IDEAS.
I was working at Browning-Ferris Industries,
a big garbage company. I liked sales and
was good at it (I have the gift of gab, as most
people would attest), but I just wanted to be
in business for myself. I bought that first
truck in 1994 and started hauling garbage
from Toronto to the US. From there, I never
looked back.
WHAT DID YOU LEARN DURING THOSE
EARLY YEARS THAT SERVED YOU WELL
LATER WHEN YOU WERE BUILDING
YOUR OWN COMPANY?
It gave me a good grasp on all aspects of
trucking. In both Canada and the US I’ve
been to every state and province. But when
I started to haul oversize, I really liked the

open deck. And I just had a lot of freight. So,
around 2004-2005, I started to get my own
freight, and from there I never asked anyone
for freight again. The first trailer I bought
was a double-drop, and then double-drop
extendables, and step-decks, and it went on
from there.
AT WHAT POINT DID YOU ENTER SC&RA?
I’d say 2010. I was in a different meeting in
Orlando, Florida, and finished up early and
had the chance to swing over to the SC&RA
Specialized Transportation Symposium, which
was going on next door. I actually got to see
the Jobs of the Year presentation. I also had a
chat with Doug Ball – who I’ll give most of the
credit to for getting me into the Association.
I’m also going to credit Jay Folladori, as well
as John McTyre.
DID YOU HAVE ANY REALISATIONS
ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS OR THE
OVERALL INDUSTRY DURING THAT FIRST
EXPERIENCE?
I realised that there was a ton of stuff I
didn’t know – stuff that I should be paying
attention to. Especially around risk-mitigation,
permitting, escorts, insurance. I realised that
if I was serious about my business I had to be
a part of this group.
HOW DID SOME OF THE EARLY
RELATIONSHIPS YOU FORGED LEAD
TO OPPORTUNITY?
I’ve always had good relationships – my
biggest client from the early years is still my
biggest client. But the relationships I have
today are a direct result of SC&RA. That’s how
a lot of my business started to grow… not just
with clients, but opening doors to different
loads, different areas and getting referrals
and work from existing members. I leaned all
the way into SC&RA early on, and it’s been
mutually beneficial. »

Moving upwind So much is happening at the moment, both in the onshore

L ast year came close to being a record
year for the wind energy industry.
At almost 94 GW the amount of installed
capacity in 2021 was just 1.8 per cent behind
the world record year of 2020. So says the
Global Wind Report 2022, published by the
Global Wind Energy Council.
Europe, Latin America, and the Africa
and Middle East, the report says, led the
way in 2021 with new records for onshore
installations. Total onshore installations
globally were down, however, by 18 %, due
to slowdowns in the USA and China. Having
said that, Asia-Pacific and North America
still accounted for more than two thirds of
the onshore installations in 2021, the GWEC
report said.
Offshore installation in 2021 was the
highest ever at 21.1 GW installed in the year,
an impressive three times more than 2020. It
increased the portion for offshore to 22.5 %,
or almost a quarter, of the total.
In a bid to meet climate change targets,
installation of more capacity still needs to
increase massively. GWEC forecasts the
addition of 557 GW of onshore capacity in
the next five years, or more than 110 GW a
year until 2026. Offshore more than 90 GW is
expected to be added by 2026.

and offshore wind industry, that despite a couple of
localised declines in 2021, business is running close to
record levels and transport equipment manufacturers are
working hard to keep up. ALEX DAHM reports
That means a lot of new turbines with the
associated transport and erection.
MOVING THEM ALL
Each turbine requires specialized transport
as a vital element, both in the onshore and
offshore wind energy sectors. Assembling a
wind turbine from as few parts as possible
has safety, quality and efficiency benefits,
among others. It just increases the burden
on manufacturers of specialized transport
equipment who continue to be busy,
developing smarter ways to move ever longer
blades, larger and heavier components.
New from Scheuerle in Germany is the
G4 rotor blade adapter. The newly improved
fourth generation model was proved on a
project by Steil Kranarbeiten in Germany.

company transported several rotor blades,
each almost 79 metres long, along a short (6
km) but highly congested route. It was from
the loading area near Salzgitter to the Flöthe
wind farm.
Steil matched the new G4 rotor blade
adapter with an InterCombi self propelled
transporter. It was configured with two sets
of six axle lines. “The rotor blade adapter
G4 made a significant contribution to
accomplishing the task,” explains engineer
Sebastian Sehl, company secretary at Steil
Kranarbeiten and responsible for project
management.
Crucial to the success were the
equipment’s high load moment and high set up
angle, Scheuerle said. The G4 adapter allowed
the blades to be elevated sufficiently to swing
them over houses and other obstacles.
“We had to erect the rotor blade, which
weighs more than 20 tonnes, by up to 45
degrees in order to shorten the transport,”
Sehl explains. At that point the load moment
was around 650 tonne-metres. Its maximum
load moment is 900 tonne-metres, with the
blade at 60 degrees, which accommodates
even larger blades.
Scheuerle says it is easy to adapt the
new G4 adapter to suit blades with different
root diameters. A height adjustment function
allows passage under bridges when loaded.
A further benefit of the InterCombi is that it
can be set at a width of 3.00 or 3.49 metres. It »

blades more cost-effectively. The G4 adapter
supports remote diagnosis and stability
monitoring capability, allowing the equipment
owner access to status reports.
STAKING A CLAIM
Another first for a wind trailer is claimed by
Ter Linden Transport from the Netherlands.
The specialist contractor was the first
customer to receive the latest MWT-XL Mega
Windmill trailer from Dutch manufacturer
Nooteboom. It consisted of a 4-axle jeep dolly
with lift adapter and a 7-axle self-steering
dolly with lift adapter.
The new MWT trailer accommodates the
latest large diameter turbine tower sections.
These have increased in diameter from 4.5
metres just a few years ago to more than 6
metres today.
Nooteboom says advantages of this type
of trailer over modular types include less
maintenance, a lower price and they are
easier to move because they are lighter and
have a shorter combination length. Key to its
success, however, is the fact it can be loaded

and unloaded without using cranes.
Now, with the XL version, turbine tower
sections with a diameter up to 6.3 metres can
be carried. With the extra diameter comes a
higher centre of gravity so more stability is
needed for these 100 tonne loads travelling at
80 km/h. To increase stability the 7-axle self
steering dolly is now 2,840 mm wide.
To transport extra long turbine blades
Goldhofer has designed new and larger
elements for its Blades transport system.
German transport specialist P. Schwandner
Logistik + Transport invested in this new kit
so it can be certified to move 80 metre blades
from Danish wind turbine manufacturer
Vestas. The Goldhofer hydraulically steerable
trailing dollies are fitted with a new hydraulic
blade tip carrier certified by Vestas.
To move the correspondingly larger tower
sections they above are used in conjunction
with a further developed Goldhofer RA
2-110 tower adapter. This can handle tower
sections weighing 110 tonnes and 6.8 metres
in diameter. Its extra payload comes from a
combination of a front bogie in the form of a
four axle dolly on pendular axles with a heavy
duty THP/SL-S (285) module trailing. Having
one free-turning device (at the front between
the dolly and the tower adapter) instead of the
usual two, increases lateral stability.
Transport equipment manufacturer
Faymonville and Austrian company Prangl
have co-operated for years developing

Features include a long stroke gooseneck,
what Faymonville says is the longest available
loading platform with 4-fold extension, and
19.5 inch pendular-axles. It has a slideable
load support for the blade tipping frame to
allow the flatbed to be shortened even under
load. It is a refinement to help when passing
through winding road sections.

in how we support our customers with
decarbonising projects. But in this case, the
benefits were not limited only to a lower
carbon footprint. With work taking place in

RIGGING: UNDER US$150,000

COMPANY
Skates and skids
The task was to receive and install hot
water generators at an airport in the USA.
Work started in 2018 to replace a total of
eight Indeck high temperature water (HTW)
generators at the site.
Standard Cartage developed a solution
that combined a skidding system with air
skates and a lightweight “dance floor” to
meet the challenge presented. Deep skidding
beams were used to span a ditch at the
outside perimeter of the H&R plant and
provided an area to land the boilers after they
had been unloaded by a crane.
The skid system continued inside the
building and was used to accommodate a low
floor loading limit of 300 pounds per square
foot. Skidding beams were used to span weak
spots, loading the building instead at the
structural beam lines, and spreading the floor
load to a sufficient footprint.
Once far inside the building, a “dance floor”
was constructed to match the floor elevation
with existing equipment pads.
Six air-skates were installed and secured
to the bottom of a pair of skidding beams.
The beams were then made into a frame by
adapting to existing spreader bar inserts,
which were already in the toolbox. Lateral
forces were controlled by wire-rope, clips,
and turnbuckles.
Inside the building, the boiler was
transferred from the skidding system to the
air-skates by applying air to the air-skates
and unpinning from the remaining track.

BARNHART
Horizontal headache
Barnhart removed and replaced a horizontal
heat exchanger at a fertiliser manufacturing
facility in Iowa, USA.
Due to its location, replacement posed a
unique puzzle. It sat atop two piers that were
6 feet (1.8 metres) off the ground and that
could not be removed.
The exchanger would need to egress
the building from the east door. Obstacles
included overhead piping and concrete
columns. The rigging plan would also need to
allow for ducking under a suspended 60 foot
(18.3 metre) product line.
Barnhart’s engineering group decided on would allow the exchanger to rotate 90

As the gantries were stroked up, the
exchanger cleared the anchor bolts with near
perfect dimensions. The dance sequence
to the alley was perfect, with gantry travel,
header beam travel and the tagline-controlled
vessel spin working in chorus towards the
south. A series of cribbing operations stepping
down the gantries and lengthening the rigging
assured final headroom clearance.
Barnhart had assembled two SofTrac
carriers in a bolster to bolster configuration.
With their low travel height and
manoeuvrability, this system was ideal for
shuttling the exchangers inside the plant.
RIGGING: $750,000 TO $2 MILLION
FAGIOLI
River dance
Fagioli was involved in the launching operation
of a 2,800 tonne bridge section for the new
San Benedetto Po bridge in Mantova, Italy.
The span was 180 metres long and
was lifted by a jack-up system to allow
the insertion of self propelled modular
transporter (SPMT) under the structure.
The trailers transferred the section onto a
dedicated barge provided with towers and
other SPMT for perfect alignment with the
central piles positioned into the river.
Fagioli executed the load out operations
in nine main phases. The first was installing
the jack-up system. Next was lifting the
bridge by the jack-up system and placing it
on an aggregate of 150 axle lines of SPMT.
In the third phase the bridge section was
transported until the beams were aligned with
the temporary towers positioned onto the
waiting barge.

The next challenge was to transport the
bridge section with the first and third SPMT
convoys. Phases five through seven involved
the careful repositioning of the bridge
section on the SPMT convoys to finally
position the bridge span on the towers.
Phase Eight involved the transport of
sections towards the barge and the transfer
of load onto the bow and stern towers onto
the barge.
Finally, it was manoeuvred towards the
piles and cap pier using strand jacks and the
tugboat and the bridge section was released
onto foundations. Subsequently the barge
was removed after the bridge section load
transfer had been completed.

Fagioli in Italy was contracted for the salvage
operation of a wreck in the Mediterranean
Sea. The Berkan B was a small ship –
something between a small bulk carrier and a
handysize bulk carrier.
First Fagioli had to confine the waters
surrounding the wreckage with barriers
to contain any pollutants. Next, the team
needed to cut the wreck into large sections
using a special diamond wire cutting
machine operated by a team of specialist
divers supported by a remotely operated
underwater vehicle (ROV).
Fagioli planned to use a 600 tonne
capacity crane secured to a barge to lift each
section and move them onto a service barge
used as a temporary storage area. When the
vessel had been cut into sections and the
operation plan was approved, Fagioli’s team
started the lifting operations.
The most challenging lift was the removal
of the stern, assured to be the heaviest
section. Documents supplied to Fagioli said
the stern weighed 500 tonnes but, in the end,
it actually weighed 800 tonnes.
Fagioli determined the best solution was to
use three crawler cranes (600, 650 and 450
tonne capacity) positioned onto the barge for
the removal of the stern. »

The most demanding aspect of the whole
transport activity was the passage onto a
23 metre bridge built in 1850 and with very
limited carrying capacity. Fagioli used rollers,
beams and cranes to allow the convoy to pass.
The lead truck was removed and with the help
of the rearmost truck, the fifth wheel and the
trailers with steering axles, Fagioli moved the
transformer inside the power station. Inside
the plant the client lifted the transformer and
positioned it onto its final foundation.

Transportes Muciño transported major
components for CCC Tamazunchale II in
Mexico on behalf of Mitsubishi Power
Americas. Tamazunchale II is a 514 Megawatt
gas-fired power plant, the largest in Latin

Since the job included many obstacles, a
conventional heavy-duty module configuration
was not feasible. The latest technology
equipment from Goldhofer was used to make
the job possible.

Mammoet crews completed the heavy haul
of 195 loads over three years, including
some of the largest onshore modules in the
industry. The job was for the construction
of the Gulf Coast Growth Ventures (GCGV)
plastics manufacturing facility in Texas, USA.

A study carried out in partnership
between specialist market research and
forecasting company Off-Highway Research
and this magazine sheds new light on the
development, size and composition of the
world’s largest mobile crane fleets.
Based on a multi-year analysis of ICST’s
IC50 (now IC100) league table of the world’s
largest crane-owning companies, Global
Mobile Crane Fleets looks at how crane
numbers and lifting capacities have changed
over the years.
The IC100 is based on the total load
moment of each company’s fleet in tonne-
metres. Companies listed in the rankings have
an IC Index from 42,600 tonne metres at the
bottom to more than 3.5 million for the first-
placed company.
Fleet sizes vary from around 50 cranes
for the smallest companies to 3,365 for the
largest fleet (in unit terms) in the ranking. In
the 2021 table, seven IC100 companies had a
fleet of 1,000 cranes or more.

crane fleets
report
IC100 companies was 888 tonne metres in
2021. This equates to a 296 tonne capacity
wheeled crane or a 178 tonne capacity
crawler. Companies in the IC100 can also
generally be split into those focusing on
the heavy lift applications, which generally
have fewer heavier cranes, or those more in
the mass market, which have larger fleets
of relatively lighter machines. This can be
discerned by their average IC Index per crane
and its variance from the global average.
Having said that, there is a clear trend
for almost all IC100 companies to move to
heavier lift cranes over time. This is observed
in the growth of the total IC Index, which has
doubled over the last decade, compared to
only a 19 per cent rise in the total number of
cranes owned. The trend is also illustrated
by the average lifting capacity of the largest
crane in each fleet, which has risen from 800
tonnes twenty years ago to more than 1,200
tonnes in 2021.

the cyclical mobile crane market tends to
swing up or down by 10 per cent or more
per year, changes in the IC100 fleet are more
modest, moving by single digit amounts each
year. There is a correlation between growth
in the IC100 fleet and GDP growth.

How to handle a
workforce windfall
W hether it’s being called The Great Resignation, or something
similar, the last year or more has seen dramatic disruption
and whole shifts in what we might have once perceived as being the
traditional workforce.
Nothing new to construction and transport; we’ve been negotiating
a worker shortage for a decade or more. But perhaps more telling was
a recent global poll conducted by Gallup, which revealed that, out of
the world’s one billion full-time workers, only 15 per cent of them are
engaged at work.
So that indicates potentially 85 per cent of people are disengaged
at work, perhaps even unhappy. Combined with a large portion of the
working population stepping away from jobs they simply didn’t align
with in the last 12 to 18 months, it stands to reason that, sooner or
later, there will be a course correction. And when millions of workers
decide to start returning to the workforce – they’re likely not going to
be looking for the same situation(s) they left behind previously. And that
bodes well for us.
But we do ourselves a great disservice if we’re not proactive,
and thus prepared, for workers who are looking for new careers and
are also in search of employers who understand modern workforce
development practices.
SC&RA LEADERSHIP
A LARGER ROLE
If you don’t think you’re ready for this potential influx, then it’s time
to first examine how you recruit, retain and train workers – for both
today and the future. The “way we’ve always done it” is probably the
first rule you need to toss out. Today’s workers require more from
their employers, and they have options they didn’t have before. While
we can certainly offer an obvious career change and an entirely new
opportunity, we can’t just assume they’ll fall in line with our age-old
systems, processes and philosophies.
Younger potential workers, especially, will gravitate towards
companies and leadership placing clear value on high retention
practices and overall employee satisfaction. It is not just young people;
the wider labour force has learned to gravitate towards companies run
by leaders who understand the modern world outside the day to day.
IDE (inclusion, diversity and equity) is playing an increasingly larger
role in what influences potential workers to commit to a company.
Today, more and more workers demand accountability. But it goes
beyond even your labour force. Stakeholders – from shareholders
to employees – are looking at your record on inclusion, diversity and
social mobility when making decisions. And they’re looking beyond
what’s needed to comply with legislative changes – for example,
gender pay gap and ethnicity pay gap reporting. They want to work with
businesses that demonstrate greater authenticity.
