The Great Lakes are a chain of deep freshwater lakes located in east-central North America,
providing water for more than 40 million people in the region. The chain consists of Lake Superior,
Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, Lake Erie, and Lake Ontario. Together, these five lakes make up the
largest surface of fresh water in the world. They cover an area of 94,600 square miles. They are
connected by a variety of lakes and rivers, which means they are the largest freshwater system in
the world. More than 20% of all the world’s freshwater, nearly 5,400 cubic miles, is in the Great
Lakes. In order of water capacity, Lake Superior holds the most, 2,900 cubic miles, Lake Michigan
