(READING SKILL : 26 marks)

1 Read the passage and answer the question


1. The earth is the only planet of the solar system which contains plenty of water and
. this water has made our earth colourful, pulsating with life of vast variety.

2. The sea occupies about 70 percent of the earth’s surface . In southern hemisphere it
occupies more area than in the northern . About 97 percent of the total water is in the sea
and the remaining three percent which is generally fresh is in lakes river ponds etc.

3. Sea has given food and shelter to countless creatures, In 1900 the population was 150 crore
now it is more the 560 crore and its increasing very fast. As a result there is a terrible hunger in
many parts of the world. In Africa, Asia and South America people do not get enough to eat. Many die of
malnutrition . Sea if used scientifically and judiciously, can meet most of our demand.

4.Plankton Algae mostly constitute the plant life. Some are so tiny microbes that cannot be
seen by naked eye but they are found in abundance in the sea.

5. Like Plant plankton there are also animal plankton, the smallest living creatures of the
sea. The animal plankton feed on plant plankton and fish. Thus there is an unbroken chain of life in
the sea. Artic Antartic seas abound in planktons algae. Fish and also blue whales, the largest living
creatures of the world.

6. Some countries have developed sea farming . The Japanese and the Hawains relish eating sea plants
more than other countries. The fact is sea plants contain rich nutrients not found in other
vegetarian food.

7. We should remember that sea is not to be exploited indiscriminately. Man in his greed
has hunted whales and some other creatures so recklessly that now they are on the verge of
extinction. As such a decision has been taken that the size of the holes in fishing nets should
be big enough to let baby fish escape.

1. Television affects our lives to a great extent. They are helpful to those who choose
carefully the shows. They not only increase the knowledge of the world , but also help us
to understand different areas of science and arts. They are a help to senior citizens unable to
leave their house or patient in hospitals. It helps in language practice.
2.On the other hand it is a curse for those who use it without thinking about their
physical or mental health . Children watch television for hours togather forgetting them
selves. It has a very negative influence on their lives.
3.Recent studies show that after watching T.V. children often loose power of concentration .
Another disadvantage is that television often causes it’s viewers to become dissatisfied
with their lives. Television becomes more real than reality and they find their lives monotonous
Before a child is fourteen he starts thinking that life is what Television shows. The wrong
choice often fills a child with excitement and enjoyment and he creates and lives in his
own world of fantasy. They do thing that they see in violent shows. All this is due to lack
of guidience and improper knowledge of life.
