Seedlings
I.INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT
Hello dear learners! Welcome to Module 5! This LAS is all about
systematic and scientific ways of caring for orchard trees and
seedlings which can help maximize yield and ensure profitability. In
addition, this can also help you to gain more knowledge on how to
take care of orchard trees/ seedlings.
Good luck and have fun!

II.LEARNING SKILLS FROM MELCs

B. Let Us Study

Systematic Ways of Caring for Orchards/ Seedlings

Ways of Watering the Plants

Plants can grow healthy when properly watered. Water the
plants daily. This can be done early in the morning or late in the
afternoon. During hot days, water the plant early in the morning
and late in the afternoon.

Proper Ways of Watering Plants

1. Natural – This is nature’s way of providing water for plants
through the rain.
2. Manual – This is with the use of water pail and dipper or water
sprinkler.
3. Artificial – Water supply is artificially produced from deep well,
dumps, and river with the use of water motors.

Proper irrigation is very important for each orchard, may it be

small or large scale. It has to be done properly for the seedlings to
grow healthy and the trees to start bearing fruits.

2
Proper Ways of Cultivation
Cultivating the land is to loosen the soil and promote the
growth of roots and improve aeration for fast absorption of nutrients
by the soil but be careful not to damage the roots. Remove the
weed around the plants. Weeds compete with the plants for food.

There are two ways:

 Off-barring - cultivating the soil in rows.
 Hilling-up – cultivating the soil towards the base of the plant.
Preparing and Applying Organic Fertilizer
Fertilizer is anything added to the soil that helps that plant
grow healthy.
Two type of fertilizer:
 Organic – natural fertilizer from decayed materials, animals,
and other natural sources.
 Inorganic- artificial fertilizer made from chemicals (liquid,
soluble, and granular form)
Benefits of Using Organic Fertilizer
 It increases the nutrients for the plants.
 It improves soil condition.
 It balances the soil Ph. Soil pH is the degree of acidity and
alkalinity of the soil. Pulverized eggshell, oyster shell, bone
meal, and any lime will neutralize the acidity of the soil.
 It helps the development of roots, flowers, shoots, and fruits.

C. Let Us Practice
Take Note: Don’t forget to take pictures before, during and after
doing this activity. Your pictures serve as your graded performance
and you need to follow the rubrics given. You also need to follow
safety measures and procedures.

Here are some safety measures to follow on how to take care of

orchard trees/ seedlings:
1. Always wear the personal equipment such as hand gloves,
apron, working clothes, meters stick, and garden tools like trowel,
sprinklers, hoe, shovel etc…
2. Ask the assistance of your parents or guardians if they are
needed.
3. Always read the instruction before doing the activity.

3
4. Follow the guide of proper posture while working to avoid
straining your back.
5. Check the working condition of tools before using them.
6. Always focus on the work at hand. Avoid distractions.
7. Never forget to clean and return garden tools in proper place
and wash hands after working.
I. Do this Activity 1:
1. Water the plants early in the morning or late in the afternoon.
2. Use sprinkler in watering the plants. Water the plants with
enough water. Too much water can be harmful to the plants.
3. As the root system develops, reduce the amount of water
given to plants.
4. Cultivate the soil around the plants, but be careful not to
damage the roots. Remove weeds around the plants. Weeds
compete with the plants for food.
5. Apply fertilizer, may it be organic or inorganic fertilizer.

D. Let Us Remember
There are three ways of caring for orchard trees and fruits trees
1. Watering the plants
2. Cultivating the plants
3. Applying the proper fertilizer to the plants

E. Let Us Practice More

Go outside of your house. Look for plants in your surroundings and
observe the growth of the plants as influenced by the kind of soil
and the type of organic fertilizers that are applied. Using the chart
below, write your observations.
