the assertion.
B. If both assertion and reason are correct, but the reason is not the correct
explanation of the assertion.

E. If both assertion and reason is incorrect.

1.Assertion: Time period of kharif crop is November to April.

Reason: Kharif crop is dependent on the western monsoon.

2. Assertion: We can drink cold drink from a bottle with help of straw.
Reason: The pressure inside the straw is more than the pressure outside.

3. Assertion: We apply water between the moving parts of machine to increase

efficiency of
machine.
Reason: Lubricants applied on the surface of moving part reduces the friction

4. Assertion: Periodic movement of birds from the place of living to a new area and
its subsequent return journey back to original place is called migration.
Reason: Birds migrate because they do not need favourable place to breed
5. Assertion: No one should be allowed to take any burning material within premises
of petrol pump.
Reason: Petrol is highly combustible substance.
6. Assertion (A): Petroleum is referred to as ‘black gold.
Reason (R): Petroleum resembles molten gold in appearance.
B. Case Study Questions( Choose any Four Questions) 4*3=12
A great variety of plants and animalsexist on earth. They are essential for thewell-
being and survival of mankind.Today, a major threat to survival of theseorganisms is
deforestation. We knowthat deforestation means clearing offorests and using that
land for otherpurposes. Trees in the forest are cut forsome of the purposes
mentioned below:
 Procuring land for cultivation.
 Building houses and factories.
 Making furniture or using wood as fuel.
Some natural causes of deforestationare forest fires and severe
droughts.Deforestation increasesthe temperature and pollution level onthe earth. It
increases the level of carbondioxide in the atmosphere. Ground waterlevel also gets
lowered. They know thatdeforestation disturbs the balance innature. They were told
by ProfessorAhmad that if cutting of trees continues, rainfall and the fertility of the
soil willdecrease. Moreover, there will beincreased chances of natural calamitiessuch
as floods and droughts.Recall that plants need carbondioxide for photosynthesis.
Fewer treeswould mean that less carbon dioxide willbe used up resulting in its
increasedamount in the atmosphere. This will leadto global warming as carbon
dioxidetraps the heat rays reflected by the earth. The increase in temperature on the
earthdisturbs the water cycle and may reducerainfall. This could cause
droughts.Deforestation is a major cause whichleads to the change in soil
properties.Physical properties of the soil get affectedby plantation and vegetation.
Recall fromClass VII how trees prevent soil erosion.Fewer trees result in more soil
erosion.Removal of the top layer of the soil exposesthe lower, hard and rocky layers.
This soilhas less humus and is less fertile.Gradually the fertile land gets
convertedinto deserts. It is called desertification.Deforestation also leads to a
decreasein the water holding capacity of the soil. The movement of water from the
soilsurface into the ground (infiltration rate)is reduced. So, there are floods. Theother
properties of the soil like nutrientcontent, texture etc., also changebecause of
deforestation
Que. 1) Which among the following are some of the natural causes of deforestation?
(a)Reusing
(b) Recycling
(c) Plantation
(d) Forest fires
Que. 2) Due to the process of soil erosion fertile land gradually gets converted into
deserts. This process is called
(a) Desertification
(b) Extinction
(c) Eradication
(d) Denitrification
Que. 3) Water holding capacity of
soil……………………………………………………………………………………… due to
deforestation.
(a) Increases
(b) Decreases
(c) Remains the same
(d) None of the above
Que. 4) What are the effects of deforestation on the environment?
Que. 5) Mention few reasons for cutting of trees in forest.
Case Study 2

Friction is a force between two surfaces that are sliding, or trying to slide, across each
other. Friction always works in the direction opposite to the direction in which the
object is moving, or trying to move. It always slows a moving object down.

Friction also produces heat. If you rub your hands together quickly, you will feel them
get warmer. Friction can be a useful force because it prevents our shoes slipping on
the pavement when we walk and stops car tyres skidding on the road. When you walk,
friction is caused between the tread on shoes and the ground. This friction acts to grip
the ground and prevent sliding. Sometimes we want to reduce friction. For example,
we use oil to reduce the friction between the moving parts inside a car engine. In
many machines, friction is reduced by using ball bearings. The reduced friction means
there is less wear on the moving parts and less heat produced.

1. When does friction arise?

2. Why should we apply oil on the hinges of the door?
3..Gymnasts apply some coarse substance on their hands. Why?
4..Explain why sportsmen use shoes with spikes.

5. What is method to reduce Friction?

Case Study 3

In the light of the availability of various resources in nature, natural resources can be
broadly classified into two kinds- Inexhaustible and Exhaustible resources.
Inexhaustible natural resources are present in unlimited quantities in nature and are
not likely to be exhausted by human activities. Examples are sunlight, and air.
Exhaustible resources are present in limited quantities in nature. They can be
exhausted by human activities. Examples of these resources are forests, wildlife,
minerals, coal, petroleum, natural gas etc. some exhaustible natural resources like
coal, petroleum and natural gas. These were formed from the dead remains of living
organisms (fossils). So, these are all known as fossil fuels.

a. Unlimited in quantity.
b. Not dependent on nature.
c. Limited in quantity.
d. Not exhausted by human activities.

ii) Various materials which are obtained from nature are called natural
resources. Which of the following is not a natural resource?
