CHAPTER – 1

1.1 History of the Organization

SRF Limited is a multi-business chemicals conglomerate engaged in the manufacturing of

industrial and specialty intermediates. The company’s business portfolio
covers fluorochemicals, specialty chemicals, packaging films, technical
textiles, coated and laminated fabrics.[1] It has a workforce of more than 7,000 employees
working across eleven manufacturing plants in India and one each in Thailand, South Africa
and Hungary. The company exports to more than 90 countries.

The company was established in 1970, as Shri Ram Fibres Limited, by DCM Limited as a
wholly owned subsidiary. Its initial focus was on the manufacture of tyre cord fabrics. Its first
manufacturing plant was set up in Manali, near Chennai, in 1973.

In 1986, the company set up a joint venture with Denso, SRF Nippondenso, for the

manufacture of automotive components. This was later spun off as a separate company in
1993. Another subsidiary, SRF Finance, started in 1986 was sold to GE Capital in 1997.

SRF also had a health-care division which manufactured plastic optical lenses, which was
spun off as a separate company in 1997.In 1989, the company entered the Chemicals
Business to manufacture refrigerants. Consequently, in 1990, it changed its name to SRF
Limited.

The company started its Packaging Films Business in 1995 when it acquired a BOPET film
plant at Kashipur in India from M/s Flow more. SRF has since then grown beyond the
national boundaries and become one of the leading manufacturers of both BOPET and BOPP
films globally. With deep knowledge of Fluorine since the early 1980s, the company entered
the Specialty Chemicals Business in 2004 as a supplier of fine chemicals to the
agrochemicals and pharmaceuticals industry. The business has a rich experience of close to
three decades in Custom Synthesis, Contract Research and Manufacturing.

2.1.4 Welfare activities

At SRF, we believe that it is essential for companies to have a purpose more engaging than

9
belief, SRF Foundation, formerly known as the Society for Education and Welfare
Development, was set up in 1982 as the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) arm of SRF
Limited. Drawing inspiration from its founders, Late Sir Shri Ram and Late Dr. Bharat Ram,
who believed in contributing to society through education, SRF Foundation is dedicated to
the transformation of education in the country. Born out of the vision of its founder, Padma
Shri, Late Mrs. Manju Bharat Ram, The Shri Ram Schools were established in Delhi NCR in
1988, and ran under the aegis of SRF Foundation. SRF Foundation also runs the SRF
Vidyalaya in Chennai and Gurugram, established in 1992 and 2020 respectively. Currently,
the SRF Foundation champions the cause of quality education in India and runs one of the
largest community programs in and around SRF’s manufacturing plant locations.
Additionally, it partners with like-minded organizations in other parts of the country to impart
education and vocational training programs to underprivileged children and the youth. The
focus is on improving both hard and soft infrastructure facilities in Government schools,
promoting computer-aided learning, and digital inclusion of communities. Our interventions
are not limited to India only. We run impactful community programs in the areas of
education, cleanliness, blood donation and other philanthropic campaigns around our

2.3Marketing : areas of operations, competitions, market share,

advertising & sales promotion

12
2.3.1 areas of operations
The company is a market leader in most of its business segments in India and commands a
significant global presence in some of its businesses/products, namely Difluoro &
Trifluoro Alkyl Intermediates Nylon 6 Tyre Cord and Belting Fabrics. SRF is the only
Indian manufacturer of ozone friendly refrigerants, namely F 134a and F 32, both of which
it has developed using indigenous technology. With the addition of F 125, SRF is now the
largest producer and seller of refrigerants in India and has further consolidated its market
leadership. SRF obtained ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, Air-
conditioning Engineers) certification for R-467A, its low GWP refrigerant blend for
stationary air-conditioning applications. It is the first-ever refrigerant from India to have
received this certification by the ASHRAE Standards Committee under the Designation
and Safety Classification of Refrigerants. SRF acquired the Dymel® HFA 134a/P
regulated medical pharmaceutical propellant business from DuPont™ in January 2015 and

fabrics, and industrial yarns.

Chapter: 03

13
3.1 Strengths and weakness of the organization

Strengths:

The strengths are basically what makes the brand different from the other competitors and
what the organisation excels at. Following are the strengths:
 Reach and Distribution: SRF Limited has customers globally and supplies products
to a wide variety of industries. This makes sure that the products are made easily
available to their customers at the right time.
 Cost Structure: As we read earlier, the main motive is to make the products available
at a low rate so that they can be more affordable. SRF Limited’s low-cost structure
helps them supply products that are low cost but with superior quality.
 Brand Reputation: SRF Limited has been in the business of producing chemicals,
tyres, coated and laminated fabrics for a large number of years. Also, with the variety
of products and services it provides, it is established as a leader in the industry. This
helps the corporation to gain a reputation and get recognized easily.
 Dealer Community: SRF Limited has built a very strong relationship with its dealers
that not only help in supplying the products but also promote the company’s core
products and training.
 Financial Position: SRF Limited has a very strong financial position in the market
with consecutive profits over the years along with accumulated profit reserves which
can be utilised for future expenditures or marketing activities.
 Skilled Labour Force: SRF Limited has invested heavily in the employees that have
made them not only skilled but are also highly motivated.

Weaknesses:

14
The weaknesses are a major drawback that stops the organisation from performing at its
optimum level. They are the areas in which businesses can make improvements. The major
drawbacks are as follows:
 Research and Development: SRF Limited has a good share of expenditure on the research
and development department but it is spending way less than a few of the players within the
industry which have benefitted as a result of their innovative products.
 Diversity in the Workforce: The local workers contribute to the majority of the workforce at
SRF Limited making it difficult for outsiders to adjust and hence resulting in the loss of
talent.
 High Employee Turnover Rates: SRF Limited has a very high employee turnover rate as
compared to its competitors which means it spends a lot on training activities as employees
keep leaving and joining.
 Need to Invest More in New Technologies: According to the country’s scale of expansion
and the geographical areas SRF Limited needs to invest more money in technology to
integrate the processes across the board. Currently, the investment in technology is not on par
as per the vision of the company.
 Limited Success Across the Core Business: Although SRF Limited is one of the leading
organisations in its industry it faces challenges in moving to other product segments with its
present culture.

CHAPTER 04:

15
Conclusion

SRF Limited is a well-known company with a significant global presence. In the SWOT
analysis of SRF Limited, we observed that the company is heavily reliant and enjoys strong
brand recognition and trust with its customers. It has a strong distribution network and has
reached across all the markets it serves, but suffers from an increasing number of suppliers in
the same space and better R&D efforts by its competitors. Also, one point not to miss out on
is that SRF Limited is in line with its marketing effort. It has created a customer base for
itself by tapping into the digital era and creating a social media presence on several platforms.
The Technical Textiles Business delivered a steady performance during the year despite
challenging operating environment investments in capacity augmentation across Tyre Cord
Fabric and Belting Fabrics segments.
