I. OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the experiment, the student is expected to:
 Solve the resultant of coplanar and concurrent forces using component method, and
Analytical method,
 Locate the equilibrant of forces,
 State the relationship between the equilibrant and the resultant between forces acting
upon a system.

II. APPARATUS
 Ruler
 Protractor

III. PROCEDURE

Analytical Method:
1. Pythagorean theorem
c= √ a + b
2 2

C a

b
You walk westward by 5ft, then walk southward by 8ft. Find your resultant displacement relative to where
you started. Draw a vector diagram showing your relative station points.

Data and Results:

Magnitude
Direction

2. Law of Cosines
The Law of Cosines relates the lengths of the sides of a triangle with the cosine of one
of its angles.

The Law of Cosines, for any triangle ABC is c 2 = a 2 + b 2 – 2ab cos C

Procedure:
 You walk 5m due North, then you change your direction by walking another 7m 30 0 N of E
and reached your final point. Sketch a vector diagram and find your resultant displacement
relative to where you’ve started by using the cosine law formula.

3. Component Method

Procedure: Using the same given concurrent forces, compute the resultant and equilibrant by the
component method.

VIII. QUESTIONS AND PROBLEMS

Note: For the following problems, the solution must be accompanied with figures

1. A boat leaves shore and travels 30km East and then 15km 500 South of East. Find the boat’s
resultant displacement vector. Use analytical method.
2. A car travels 50 km to the North and then 30 km toward East. At what angle East of North should
the car head in order to reach the origin in a straight path? Use analytical method
3. Using the component method, determine the resultant of the following vectors. Lay out the
vectors in the box
Given:
A= 250N, 370 S of W
B =150N, 450 N of E
C = 300N, 600 N of E
