CASE STUDY

 DESCRIPTION :
Recently, there have been widespread incidents of
electric scooters catching fire in various parts of the country forcing
manufacturers to recall their vehicles. One of the few examples is a
40-year-old man who died at Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh after
his EV scooter exploded in his parking lot. The fire incidents have
prompted the government to form a panel to examine and have
warned companies of various penalties if they were found to be
negligent of the rules and regulations.

 REASON:
The cause of most incidents is highly speculated
to be the poor lithium-ion battery used in the Ola S1 Pro. A
thermal runaway happens inside the battery when a lithium-ion
battery is damaged or short-circuited. The thermal runaway is
highly flammable and difficult to control.

Another reason is due to the poorly designed BMS(Battery

Management System). Over charging fundamentally happens
due to poorly designed BMS hardware and software. Whether
used in electric vehicles or electronic devices, these batteries
can catch fire if they have been improperly manufactured or
damaged. It could also happen if the software has been wrongly
designed.
