Motivation.
Any influence that triggers,
directs or maintains

Students get a ‘token’ for their
participation in class.

Extrinsic motivation, rather than

intrinsic motivation.

Intrinsic motivation is based on the

sense of personal satisfaction they
get when doing something, while
extrinsic motivation is based on the
desire to receive something from
others.
Think why you are
in college.
Think why you are in college?

Is it because you enjoy learning and want to pursue

an education to make yourself a more
knowledgeable individual? If so, then this is intrinsic
motivation. However, if you're here because you
want to get a college degree to make yourself feel
more valuable, a high-paying career or to meet the
demands of your parents, then your motivation is
more extrinsic.
Ariely (2019) states that extrinsic
motivation will disappear when the
reward is no longer there.

Discussion
How do you think a person can have
a good performance at work? Is
intrinsic motivation always better
than extrinsic motivation? If so,
how can superiors increase the
intrinsic motivation of their
employees in order to demonstrate
consistent performance?
