Lab 4: Investigating the components of soil Skill: ORR

Date: ___________________________________

Lab Reference-Ecological Study

AIM: To investigate the components of soil. Soil profiling/Sedimentation Test.

APPARATUS: soil sample, digital scale, measuring cylinder, tap water, glass rod. ruler and watch/clock.

For ORR you need to rewrite the Method in Past Tense

METHOD:

1. Measure 50g of the soil sample using the digital scale.

2. Place the measured soil sample into a large measuring cylinder

3. Add tap water until within 5cm of the top of the apparatus.

4. Use the glass rod to stir the mixture thoroughly. Then leave to stand for 24 hours until the particles settle.

5. Observe and record the layers present.

6. Use a ruler to estimate the percentage of each layer. Tabulate your findings.

7. Present the data in a pie chart.
