Telangana, Tokyo body sign MoU for municipal waste incineration


On January 19, 2018, Telangana State government announced that it had signed a Memorandum
of Understanding (MoU) with the Clean Authority of Tokyo for municipal solid waste incineration
facilities.
i. Clean Authority of Tokyo runs incineration plant for burning up combustible waste taken out
from home and office in 23 wards of Tokyo, Japan.
ii. The MoU was signed between Yoshimi Sato, Vice-President of Clean Authority of Tokyo and
JayeshRanjan, Principal Secretary, Industries & Commerce (I&C), Telangana State Government.
iii. As per the terms of the MoU, Telangana State Government and Clean Authority of Tokyo will
exchange knowledge on municipal solid waste incineration facilities. In future, both the sides may
also exchange human resource for the same.

India's first National Park for differently abled people inaugurated in Hyderabad
On January 5, 2018, Telangana State Government inaugurated India's first National Park for
differently abled people in Hyderabad.
i. The park has speech therapist, vocational training instructors and physiotherapist for the
differently-abled children.
ii. The park was inaugurated by Telangana Municipal administration and Urban
Development Minister K.T. Rama Rao.

‘Sammakka Saaralamma Maha Jathara’ Tribal festival commences in Telangana


'Sammakka Saaralamma Maha Jathara', a tribal festival, will begin on 31st January 2018, in
Eturunagaram, Telangana.
i. The tribal people worship the tribal goddess 'Sammakka' during the festival. Tribal people
from Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh would participate
in this festival.
ii. Nearly 20 lakh water packets have been arranged by the district administration for distribution
during the festival. Free Wi-Fi facility has also been arranged.

Telangana government constitutes minorities commission under Mohammed


Qamaruddin
On 2nd January 2018, Telangana government formed Minorities Commission with Mohammed
Qamaruddin as its Chairman.
i. Rajarapu Pratap was made vice chairman of Telangana Minorities Commission.

Shailendra Kumar Joshi appointed as Telangana Chief Secretary


On 31st January 2018, Shailendra Kumar Joshi was named the Chief Secretary of
Telangana.
i. Decision regarding Shailendra Kumar Joshi’s appointment was taken by Telangana Chief
Minister K.Chandrashekhar Rao.
ii. Shailendra Kumar Joshi is at present the Special Chief Secretary, Irrigation. He replaces S.P.
Singh as Telangana Chief Secretary.

22nd edition of World Congress on Information Technology (WCIT) and 26th edition of
Nasscom India Leadership Forum (ILF) held in Hyderabad
On 19th to 21st February 2018, 22nd edition of World Congress on Information Technology
(WCIT) and 26th edition of Nasscom India Leadership Forum (ILF) are held
concurrently, at the Hyderabad International Convention Centre, in Hyderabad.WCIT&
ILF:
i. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the summit through a video conference. The
WCIT is held for the first time in India.
ii. Telangana is the partner state for both WCIT and ILF. Nasscom is the host of
WCIT. The 26th edition of India Leadership Forum (ILF) is a limited edition.

Telangana CM announces five lakh rupees health-cum-life insurance scheme for farmers
On February 26, 2018, Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao announced five lakh
rupees health-cum-life insurance scheme for farmers in the state.
i. Announcement in this regard was made by K Chandrasekhar Rao while addressing the regional
conference of Farmers’ Coordination Committees in Karimnagar, Telanagana.
ii. Over 70 lakh farmers across Telangana will be covered under this scheme. In case of

death of farmer, amount will be paid to families of farmers. Health insurance will be provided in
case of hospitalisation.
iii. Entire premium for the insurance will be borne by the Telangana State Government. Rs. 500
crore has been allocated for implementation of this scheme.

Telanganagovt appoints task force on urban mobility


On February 19, 2018, Telangana State Government constituted a task force on urban mobility
to study the feasibility of the monorail model and other modes of transport for the IT
corridor in Hyderabad.
i. Arvind Kumar, Principal Secretary, Municipal Administration is the Member Convenor
of this task force.
ii. The task force will suggest the corridors for phase II and phase III of the metro-rail project. It
will suggest best and most economical ways of transport viz. monorail, tram and e-vehicles on
various routes.
iii. Besides, the task force will recommend various options for funding such projects. The options
may include public-private partnership (PPP), joint ventures and annuity funding.

Telangana government aims to double valuation of life sciences sector to $100 billion in
10 years
Telangana Industry Minister K. T. Rama Rao said that, the Telangana government aims to
double the valuation of its life sciences ecosystem to $100 billion in 10 years.
i. K. T. Rama Rao made this announcement after he inaugurated the 15th BioAsia
Summit. He said that 4 lakh jobs will be created in the life sciences industry in the next 10 years.
ii. Current value of life sciences ecosystem in Telangana is $50 billion. It has more than 800
companies.
iii. K. T. Rama Rao also said that, Telangana contributes more than 35% to the national
pharmaceutical production of India.

Telangana, Taiwan sign agreement for better technology partnership


On February 21, 2018, Telangana State Government signed a Memorandum of
Understanding (MOU) with Taoyuan City of Taiwan for better technology partnership in the
state.
i. This MoU was signed during World Congress on Information Technology (WCIT) 2018, in
Hyderabad.
ii. The MoU was signed by Telangana's Information Technology Principal Secretary Jayesh Ranjan
and Taoyuan City Director of the Board, Robert Huang in presence of Telangana's Minister for
Information Technology and Industries, K.T. Rama Rao.
iii. Taoyuan City is home to many firms specialising in emerging technology viz. Internet of Things
and robotics.

Regional conference of southern states on water resources held in Hyderabad


A “Regional Conference of Southern States on Water Resources” was held at Hyderabad,
Telangana on February 20, 2018.This conference was organised by Union Ministry of Water
Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation.
i. It was chaired by Minister of State for Water Resources, River Development and Ganga
Rejuvenation, Arjun Ram Meghwal.
ii. Ministers, Principal Secretaies and Engineer-in-Chiefs of Water Resources of Kerala,
Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Puducherry attended this
conference.

India’s largest Floating Treatment Wetland (FTW) launched in Hyderabad's Neknampur


Lake
On 2nd February 2018, the Floating Treatment Wetland (FTW) on Neknampur Lake was
inaugurated in Hyderabad.
i. The Floating Treatment Wetland (FTW) on Neknampur Lake was inaugurated on
World Wetlands Day (February 2). The size of the FTW is 3,000 sq. ft.
ii .It has been named the largest FTW in India by the India Book of Records

15th edition of BioAsia 2018 held in Hyderabad


15th edition of BioAsia, the annual flagship event of the Government of Telangana, was held
from 22nd – 24th February, 2018 in Hyderabad.
i. BioAsia is a preeminent technology and bio-business convention in Asia for Life sciences,
pharmaceuticals and healthcare which brings together all the national as well as international
stakeholders of Pharma and Life Sciences sector.
ii. Theme of BioAsia 2018 was “RIGHT TIME, RIGHT NOW” focusing on strategies to keep
up with pace of change and innovative ways to develop new models for distribution & healthcare
delivery.

Veteran Telugu actor Lakshmi Devi passes away


On 3rd February 2018, Telugu actor Lakshmi Devi died after suffering a cardiac arrest, at
Manikonda, in Hyderabad, Telangana.
i. Lakshmi Devi started a film institute along with her husband Devadas. She has trained great
actors like Telugu film star Chiranjeevi.

Telugu actor Gundu Hanumantha Rao passes away


On 19th February 2018, Telugu actor Gundu Hanumantha Rao passed away after suffering
from kidney ailments at his residence, in Hyderabad.
i. Gundu Hanumantha Rao was 61 years old. He is survived by his son.
ii. He was born on 10th October 1956 in Vijayawada. He has acted in over 400 films.
iii . He gained fame through the TV series Amrutam. He has won three Nandi awards.

Telangana Current Affairs – March 2018


Telangana launches "T App Folio" app for all government services
On 28th February 2018, Telangana government launched “T App Folio”, a mobile governance
application, for delivery of government to citizen (G2C) and business to citizen (B2C)
services anytime and anywhere.
i. Telangana IT Minister K T Rama Rao said that, Telangana has become the second state in
India to launch a mobile governance application in place for provision of G2C services.
ii. T App Folio provides more than 150 services &Informational services like MeeSeva centers,
Ration shops, Hy-Fi hotspots are also available in the first phase of T App Folio.
iii.It has been launched in Telugu and English languages.

'WE Hub', India's first state-led incubator for women launched by Telengana
Government
On March 8 2018, Government of Telangana launched Women Entrepreneurship Hub (WE-
Hub) in Hyderabad. WE-Hub is India’s first state-led incubator exclusively for women
entrepreneurs

i.It is a platform which is open to all kinds of innovations including a tech start-up, a start-up in
social innovation or an idea which is completely and radically different.
ii.It was launched by Tessy Thomas, Director, ASL, DRDL and Vani Kola, Managing Director of
Kalaari Capital, in the presence of IT & Industries Minister KT Rama Rao.
iii.Former Joint Director for Electronics Promotions of Telangana,Deepthi Ravula has been

MEA launches ‘Videsh Aaya Pradesh ke Dwaar’ in Hyderabad


On March 22, 2018, External Publicity and Public Diplomacy Division of the Ministry of External
Affairs (MEA) launched an initiative, 'Videsh Aaya Pradesh ke Dwaar' in Hyderabad,
Telangana with an aim to bring the domain of foreign policy closer to the people.
i. Under this initiative, MEA will hold direct interaction with the local media (having wide
readership profile) in different cities across India.
ii. Through these interactions, MEA will communicate foreign policy priorities in simple terms and
will highlight the benefits accruing to the common people through diplomatic efforts.

Telugu made compulsory in all schools in Telangana


On 20th March 2018, Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao mandated teaching
Telugu as a compulsory subject in all the public and private schools of the Telangana for the
academic year 2018-2019.
i. He said that, the Telugu University and the Sahitya Academy will decide the Telugu syllabus for
various standards.

Telangana government MoU with Safran Electrical and Power SAS


On 10th March 2018, the Telangana government signed a MoU with Safran Electrical and
Power SAS for establishing an aerospace unit in Telangana.
i. Philippe Petitcolin, CEO, Safran and Jayesh Ranjan, Principal Secretary (industries) of Telangana
government inked the MoU at an event in Delhi.The cost for this will be Rs 52 crore.

Telangana slashes VAT on aviation fuel by 15%


On March 23, 2018, Telangana Industries Minister KT Rama Rao announced a reduction
in Value Added Tax (VAT) on Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) to 1 per cent from 16 per cent.
This decision is likely to boost air traffic at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport located
near Hyderabad which has completed 10 years of operations.

‘WINGS INDIA 2018’ held in Hyderabad


On March 8,2018, Ministry of Civil Aviation and Airport Authority of India and FICCI
jointly organized the four-day biennial event ‘WINGS INDIA 2018 ‘ in Hyderabad. Theme of
the four-day biennial event this year is ‘India-Global Aviation Hub’.

i.WINGS INDIA 2018 is a platform for interactions, forging alliances, investments and air
connectivity between the States and the global aviation players & stakeholders.The conference
will focus on fostering partnership to transform Indian aviation and the role of conducive

Microsoft opens the Garage in Hyderabad


On 26th March 2018, Microsoft opened the 'Garage' at the Microsoft India Development Centre in
Hyderabad, Telangana.
i. The Garage was inaugurated at the Microsoft India Development Centre in Hyderabad
by Telangana IT Minister K T Rama Rao.
ii. It is a platform for Microsoft employees that encourages experimentation, working together
across organisations and to discover ideas and develop prototypes, adding value to existing
products.

Tata-Boeing joint venture established aerospace facility in Hyderabad


On 1st March 2018, Tata Boeing Aerospace Ltd (TBAL) inaugurated facility to manufacture
fuselages for the AH-64 Apache helicopter in Hyderabad.It is a joint venture of Boeing Co.
and Tata Advanced Systems Ltd (TASL).
i This facility will be the only global producer of fuselages for AH-64 Apache helicopter delivered
by Boeing.
ii. Secondary structures and vertical spar boxes for AH-64 Apache helicopter will also be produced
in this facility. The first fuselage would be delivered in 2018.
iii. The facility was inaugurated by Union Defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman and
Telangana minister for Industries and IT, KT Rama Rao.
Anjani Kumar appointed as Commissioner of Police, Hyderabad
Anjani Kumar has been made the new Commissioner of Police, Hyderabad.
i. Anjani Kumar is an IPS officer of 1990 batch. He has been appointed the new Commissioner of
Police, Hyderabad, as part of a major reshuffle of senior police officers in Telangana.
ii. Kumar was the Additional DGP (Law & Order). The post of Hyderabad Police Commissioner was
vacant for the past 4 months.
iii. Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), V.V. Srinivasa Rao was in-charge of the
post during those 4 months
iv. V.V. Srinivasa Rao has been made the Chairman of Telangana State Level Police Recruitment
Board.

Pradhan Mantri Ujwala Yojana Launched in Telangana


On April 14, 2018, on the occasion of 127th birth anniversary BR Ambedkar, Union Petroleum and
Natural Gas Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan launched Pradhan Mantri Ujwala Yojana (PMUY) in
Telangana.
PMUY was launched in May 2016. The objective of this scheme is to provide deposit-
free LPG connections with monetary assistance to women from below poverty line (BPL)
households, thereby preventing health hazards emanating from usage of unclean cooking fuel and
fossil fuel for domestic cooking purpose.PMUY has so far benefited more than 3.5 crore families.

GI tag for Telangana’s Adilabad dokra, Warangal Dhurries


Two craft forms from Telangana - Adilabad Dokra, an ancient bell metal craft popular in the
tribal regions of Adilabad district in Telangana and Warangal Dhurries, a popular cotton
rug - have been issued the Geographical Indication (GI) Registration Certificate by the GI
Registry, Chennai.
i. Adilabad Dokra metal casting products mainly includes bells, idols of local deities, dancing
figures, statues, jewellery and many other decorative items.
ii. The speciality of Adilabad Dokra is that no two pieces are alike in shape as well as in
size thus making it impossible to replicate.
iii. 'Warangal Dhurries' are famous across the world due to the high degree of
craftsmanship involved in its creation. Warangal became famous as Dhurrie weaving centre
on account of abundant availability of cotton.
About Geographical Indications (GI) tag:
i. GI tag is a name or sign given to certain products which correspond to a specific geographical
location or origin.
ii. GI tag grants exclusivity for using the name/sign to the producer/manufacturer in the
corresponding region and thereby testifies the origin, quality and reputation of the
product/commodity.

Telangana announces 2% quota for Sports persons in government jobs


On 21st April 2018, Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao announced two per cent
reservation in Telangana state government jobs for sportspersons.
i. K Chandrasekhar Rao made this announcement after he met with 18 members, who
participated in the recent Commonwealth Games at Gold Coast.
ii. A senior official said that, currently two per cent seats in educational institutions were reserved
for sportspersons.

Telangana CM launches investment support scheme for farmers
On May 10, 2018, Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao launched 'Rythu Bandhu'
(friend of farmers), an investment support scheme for farmers.
More information about Telangana Government’s 'Rythu Bandhu' Scheme:
i. This scheme is claimed to be the first such initiative among all states of India.
ii. Under 'Rythu Bandhu' Scheme, all farmers in Telangana who own land, will be provided
investment support of Rs 8000 per acre per year.
iii. This scheme has been rolled out with budgetary allocation of Rs 12000 crore for 2018-19.
iv. However, 'Rythu Bandhu' Scheme has not been extended to tenant farmers.

Telangana CM announces employee welfare schemes


On May 16, 2018, Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao announced setting up of a new
Pay Revision Commission (PRC) for government employees.
i. Telangana Government will be giving special allowances to employees working in
remote areas.Mr. Rao added that all benefits accruing to Retired Employees will be sanctioned
100% and implemented by the day an employee retires.
ii. He also announced that women employees will be given special leave of five days and Teachers
in the state will get good pay revision in coming days.

Gadkari to lay foundation stone of highway projects in Telangana


i. On May 5, 2018 Union Minister Nitin Gadkari will lay foundation stone of four national highway
projects costing Rs 1,523 crore in Telangana. The ceremony to be held in Hyderabad and it will
be attended by Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao.
ii. It includes six laning of Aramgarh-Shamsabad section of NH 44 between Hyderabad and
Bangalore, rehabilitation and upgradation of NH 765D from Hyderabad outer ring road to Medak,
construction of 4-lane flyover at Amberpet-X Roads, and construction of 6-lane elevated corridor
from Uppal to Narapally on the Hyderabad-Bhopalpatnam section of NH 163.

Pawan Kalyan unfurls world's largest Indian flag in Telangana


On 10th May 2018, Pawan Kalyan, actor and Jana Sena Party founder, unfurled the flag, claimed
to be the world's largest Indian national flag at Hyderabad, Telangana.
i.The flag was 122 feet in length and 183 feet in width. The flag was prepared by an organisation
called 'Vibrants of Kalam'.
ii. This flag is claimed to be world's largest Indian National Flag. Pawan Kalyan administered a
national integration pledge to youth who attended the event.

UNDP to set up a skill development centre in Hyderabad:


With an aim to impart skill training and self-sufficiency the United Nations Development
Programme (UNDP) has decided to set up a centre at‘BHAROSA’ in Hyderabad .
i. The agreement has been signed by the UNDP & Hyderabad policeunder the ‘DISHA’ project to
provide skill training to the distressed women effected by violence .
ii. This aims at enabling rehabilitationand job creation like desk jobs and in the field of
enterprenuership for the women involved depending on their educational qualification.
UNDP:
♦ Headquarters : New York City, US.
♦ Objective: To impart and help in promoting self-development and train people in need of
developing countries involved with it. To assist them with technical and financial cooperation.
BHAROSA:
♦ It is a centre open 24x7 for distressed women and children seeking services related to health,
medicine, legal , therapeutic counseling etc. It has support staff well equipped with gadgets and
technical services that might help the victim.
♦ Since it’s inception it has helped 3560 victims out of which 2600 of them are victims of domestic
violence.

Telangana government announces unique life insurance scheme for farmers


On 25th May 2018, Telangana Chief Minister Chandra Sekhara Rao announced a unique life
insurance scheme for farmers, in Hyderabad.
i. As per the scheme, the government will offer life insurance facility of 5 lakh rupees to the
nominee, after the death of the insured farmer.
ii. The total premium will be paid by the government to the insurance agency. The nominee will
receive the amount within 10 days of placing the claim after the farmer’s death.
iii. Irrespective of the reason of the farmer’s death, the dependent family will receive the benefit.

Guruji Ravinder Sharma, the renowned artist-philosopher has passed away


On 29th April 2018, Ravinder Sharma, also called as Guruji passed away at his
residence, after fighting cancer, in Adilabad, Telangana.He is the founder of Adilabad's Kala
Ashram.

i. He is an artist and philosopher. He had received the Kala Ratna by the Andhra Pradesh State

Veteran actor, producer Madala Ranga Rao passes away


On May 27,Veteran Actor,Producer of Telugu film Madala Ranga Rao Passes away.
i. The 69 year old Actor cum Producer was suffering from heart-related ailments & admitted to
hospital.
ii . He was popularly known as "Red Star". He was also a member of the CPI-led Praja Natya
Mandali.
iii. His famous works are 'Yuvatharam Kadilindhi', 'Yerra Mallelu', 'Praja Shakthi',
'Swarajyam', 'Viplavashankham' and 'Mahaprasthanam’.
iv. He received the prestigious Golden Nandi award from the then Andhra Pradesh government
for his film 'Yuvatharam Kadilindhi'.
