Complex Engineering Activity (CEA)

Lab Project
Subject: Electronic Circuit Design Lab
Instructor: Engr. Rashid Iqbal

Objective
The objective of this complex engineering activity is to explore, investigate, analyse and
develop hands-on experience on complex engineering problems that mark the following
attributes:
1. The activity involves research in engineering principles, problem solving and
critical analysis.
2. The activity also covers suitable theoretical workup before developing the
prototype.
3. The activity inculcates within itself the already learnt and practiced engineering
approaches.

Complex Engineering Activity Outcomes (CEAO)

This activity results in the attainment of the following complex engineering activity
outcomes:
PLO3: Analysis and Design/Development of Solutions
PLO10: Communication

1. In this course, the activity is mapped to CLO1 and CLO3.

2. Your performance in this project will play an important role in their attainment.

CLO LEVEL PLO Outcome

01 P1 03 Display and understand the working of BJT, their usage in electrical
circuits and their applications.
03 A2 10 Be able to present and comply with key concepts and procedures taught
in electronic circuit design lab.

Problem Statement
Let’s assume that you work for a company that develops manufacturers and markets public
address and voice paging systems for use in service garages, super markets, departmental
stores and the like. You are responsible for the most basic product in this line, which is a
simple preamplifier with a microphone input followed by a power amplifier and a speaker.
You will apply the basic knowledge gained in the lab to complete your project.
The Public Address System
This system includes a magnetic microphone, a two-stage preamplifier, a power amplifier and
a speaker. This design is a address system that your company plans to produce and market
and is intended for limited application in small businesses for paging employees or making
announcements. A block diagram of the system is shown below. The microphone input goes
to the preamplifier, which has an adjustable volume control. The output of the preamplifier
goes to a power amplifier that drives a speaker. The DC supply voltages are provided by a
battery pack or by an electronic power supply.

Figure: Complete Diagram of PA system

The System Requirements

1. The preamp is to operate with a peak input signal range of from 15 mV to 40 mV. The
minimum range of voltage gain adjustment is from 80 to 180.
2. The speaker has an impedance of 8 ohms and can handle up to 15 W. The frequency
response is from 100 Hz to 7500 Hz.
3. The frequency range of the amplifier is to be at least 100 Hz to 5000 Hz.

Important Note
Serious efforts are required in this problem as this problem will be evaluated on individual
basis and it carries very high portion of marks from your lab.

Deliverables
Each application of the problem will be evaluated separately in accordance with the dates
given below.
1. Proposal to be submitted on 6th June 2022 on LMS in assignment section.
2. Software based implementation submission on LMS and Viva will be 13th June 2022.
3. Hardware based submission viva will be held at the end of semester along with Final
Viva (11th July 2022).
Note: For this project you can work individual. Each student must present his/her own
individual part of project in presentation/viva.
