5) How will you test the presence of protein in a food item?


A) Take a small quantity of food item in a test tube.
Using a dropper, add two drops of copper sulphate solution (blue colour) and
Ten drops of caustic soda.
Shake it well.
The violet colour indicates the presence of protein in the food sample.
6) How will you test the presence of fat in a given food item?
A) Take a small quantity of food item.
Wrap it in a piece of paper and crush it carefully.
Straighten the paper. An oily patch indicates the presence of fat in the given
food item.

7) Name the different food groups.


A) Food can be broadly divided into the following three groups
i) Energy giving food. Ex: carbohydrates and fats.
ii) Body building food. Ex: Protein
iii) Protective food. Ex: vitamins and minerals
8) What is roughage (dietary fibres) ? Why its presence in our food is important?
A) Undigestible fibrous material present in the food is known as roughage. It
helps in the proper functioning of our digestive system.
9) What is a balanced diet?
A) A diet that contains all the nutrients in correct amount is known as a balanced
diet.
