3. WiBAS and Omnibas OSDR Introduction


Outdoor-Software-Defined-Radio (OSDR) is a unique Outdoor Radio platform offering IP connectivity in Point-
to-MultiPoint (PtMP) and Point-to-Point (PtP) applications via a common hardware radio unit. The firmware (PtP
/ PtMP) loaded and activated onto the OSDR hardware will determine the operational mode.
• OSDR PtMP Hub and Terminal Station as part of the WiBAS network
• OSDR PtP Nodes as part of the OmniBAS network

WiBAS, the PtMP representation of the OSDR platform delivers IP connectivity in demanding heterogeneous
network (HetNet) backhaul applications by employing state-of-the art Point-to-MultiPoint (PtMP) technology.
WiBAS OSDR combines sophisticated QOS features and robust performance with a highly efficient operation.
OmniBAS is the all-outdoor microwave product family of OSDR which offers IP connectivity in Point-to-Point
(PtP); supports market-leading modulations up to 4096-QAM and employs advanced Ethernet and traffic
processing functionality to demonstrate exceptional microwave radio performance.
WiBAS OSDR-Hub,-TS and OmniBAS OSDR PtP use PoE (Power over Ethernet) via the electrical Ethernet
interfaces.
PtMP sector traffic aggregation and connectivity to the core network is achieved with the OmniBAS 8W Indoor
Aggregator, also referred to as CBAN (Converged Backhaul Aggregation Node)
Being compatible with OSDR OmniBAS, OSDR WiBAS and OmniBAS 8W; the uni-MS (Unified Management Suite)
can be used to manage and monitor PtMP, PtP and traffic Aggregator equipment (8W).

4. WiBAS and OmniBAS Product Line


WiBAS OSDR (PtMP) operates in the 10.5 / 26 / 28 / 32 GHz bands while WiBAS OSDR-S operates on 42GHz.
Channel bandwidths of 14 /28 /56 MHz are available on all frequency ranges with a 7 MHz option added only
for 10.5 GHz.
Hitless adaptive modulation of up to 1024 QAM is available in the downstream direction with up to 256 QAM in
the upstream direction.
OmniBAS OSDR (PtP) operates in the 6 / 7 / 8 / 11 / 13 / 15 / 18 / 23/ 26/ 28 / 38 GHz bands and modulation of
up to 4096 QAM can be achieved.

when removing it from the OSDR.

6.4. OSDR Labelling

Due to the fact that with OSDR (Outdoor Software Defined Radio) the same physical hardware is used for Hub
and TS sites, it is critical to note that in the MTN network deployment plan the Hub will always use High ODU
while the Terminal Station will always use Low ODU.

6.5. WiBAS Hub Power Requirements


WiBAS Hub power requirement is -48V DC which will be supplied through PoE (Power over Ethernet) on the Cat5
cable connected to the GbE2 or FE interfaces. The Hub ODU it will be connected to the appropriate port on the
OmniBAS 8W aggregator WOE (Wireline Modem Optical / Electrical) card for data and power.

6.6. WiBAS Hub Antennas


The frequency bands that will be covered in detail are 10.5 GHz and 26 GHz, both have different options in terms
of sectorial antennas for Hub sites.

7. WiBAS Terminal Station Familiarization


WiBAS terminal station will have exactly the same physical attributes as that of the Hub ODU with the exception
of the frequency band (High / Low). The TS always use the Low band while the Hub use the High band. There are
also some differences in terms of antenna type, power supply and software operating mode.

7.1. WiBAS Terminal Station Power Requirements


WiBAS Terminal Station (TS) power requirement is -48V DC which will be supplied through PoE (Power over
Ethernet) on the Cat5 cable connected to the GbE2 or FE interfaces. For the Terminal Station it will be obtained
from the separately installed Power Supply Unit (PSU).

Power supply Unit (PSU)

The PSU will connect to the normal 220V AC supply on site and insert the required DC voltage through the Cat5
cable. The PSU have two RJ-45 connections, one for traffic / management equipment (IN) and one for powering
the ODU (OUT).
Peripheral devices like laptops, routers, switches etc. should never be connected to the OUT port as the DC
voltage will damage the equipment.

7.2. WiBAS Terminal Station Antennas

8. OmniBAS 8W Aggregator Familiarization


The OmniBAS 8W Aggregator is a native-IP, highly-modular 19”; 2RU indoor unit capable of simultaneously
accommodating eight Hub sectors, two interface cards for legacy E1 / STM-1 traffic and two controller cards in
the same chassis. Each controller card has six GbE data ports (4xSFP / 2 Electrical) and a management port.

8.1. OmniBAS 8W Aggregator basic layout

8.2. OmniBAS 8W Power Requirements


OmniBAS 8W requires -48V DC that is supplied from the appropriate circuit breaker on the site DC distribution
system and connected to the power socket on the Control Card.

• Operating Voltage - -40.5V to -60V DC (-48 nominal)
• Max. Power Consumption – 550 W
• Power cable – 2.5mm² multi-stranded copper cable
• Single pole circuit breaker 25A (To connect to -48V)

9. Lightning & Surge Protectors


Lightning / Surge protector will be installed on both ends of the Cat5 cable used for power and data connection
at the Hub and Terminal Station sites. The surge protector is connected to the site earth. Cat5 fly leads will be
used to connect from the surge protector to the indoor / outdoor equipment.

11. Installing the OmniBAS 8W Aggregator


OmniBAS 8W Aggregator will be installed inside the equipment shelter and provide traffic connectivity between
the Core Network and the WiBAS PtMP network through the Electrical / Optical GbE ports on the controller card
and the GbE DC OUT port on the WOE card in one of the 8 modem card slots.

11.1. OmniBAS 8W Pre-Installation checks:


• Locate and test appropriate grounding points.
• Locate and test allocated DC power supply distribution point (25A single pole circuit breaker).
• Locate allocated 2RU, 19” rack space
• Locate the network port to the core network.
• Confirm the cable connection type for the core network (Electrical / Optical)

11.2. Required Equipment and Material


Minimum equipment and material required is listed below:
• OmniBAS 8W chassis with controller card
• Wireline Modem Optical / Electrical cards installed in allocated modem card slots.
• M6 cage nuts
• Required SFP
• Appropriate power cable (two-core 2.5mm²)
• Two pole power connecter kit
• Crimping tool for power connecter metallic pins
• Wire stripper

11.3. OmniBAS 8W Mounting


OmniBAS 8W is 19” rack mountable unit and is installed indoors in the allocated rack space and secured with
M6 cage nuts.

11.4. OmniBAS 8W Power Connections


-48V DC from the main site DC distribution board circuit breaker is connected to power connecter slot on the
control card with the supplied two pole power connecter and appropriate power cable.
Specified metallic pins in the power connecter kit are connected to the copper strands of the power cable and
inserted into the two-pole connecter.

11.9. OmniBAS 8W Power-On Procedure


OmniBAS 8W requires -48V DC that is supplied from the appropriate circuit breaker on the site DC distribution
system and connected to the power socket on the Control Card

• Configuration of In Band Management address
• Disable the DC output of all the WOE cards installed in the chassis

Before any configuration can be carried out on the 8W, the following basic requirements must be met.
• Laptop with Java Runtime Environment (JRE) installed and working

Basic configuration procedure main steps set out below:


• Connect to 8W with the Uni-MS Node Manager software on the laptop
• Create the management VLAN on the 8W

• Disable WOE card DC output
• Enter the Site / System Name into the 8W
• Save the configuration

After the installation and configuration process of the OmniBAS 8W Aggregator is completed, the following
points have to be confirmed:
• All the 8W installation check points confirmed
• Data connection between the 8W and the core network securely made with the correct cable type and
on the supplied ports
• In Band Management IP, VLAN and Gateway details correctly entered
• All PonE Admin State for all installed WOE cards set to disabled
• System configuration saved
• NOC Operator can detect the 8W on the Uni-MS

12. Installing a WiBAS Hub Sector


WiBAS PtMP Hub equipment will be deployed in 10GHz or 26GHz sectors depending on operator requirement.
WiBAS PtMP ODU will be installed at the required height and azimuth on the tower with the applicable down-
tilt and connected via Cat5 cable to the appropriate WOE (Wireline Modem Optical / Electrical) port on the
OmniBAS 8W aggregator.
Due to the fact the WiBAS OSDR Hub will be integrated to and powered by the 8W Aggregator it is recommended
that the installation of the 8W Aggregator is completed and confirmed before that of the Hub

12.1. WiBAS Hub Sector Pre Installation checks


• Confirm specific height, azimuth and down-tilt requirements
• Confirm required polarization
• Confirm required sector frequency settings
• Confirm WiBAS OSDR is of the High type

The 26GHz OSDR will be attached directly to the mounting kit that is secured to the structure. The 26 GHz
sectorial antenna attaches directly to the OSDR.
WiBAS OSDR should be attached to hoisting connection as per below:

The purpose of this section will solely be to outline the minimum steps required to ensure that the OSDR Hub
sector is visible on the Uni-MS for management from the NOC. The following will be outlined:
• Configuring the In Band Management address
• Configuring the Site / Sector name
In order to streamline the process, the initial configuration will be done via the out-band management (FE)
interface of the OSDR
Once the initial configuration is completed, the Cat5 cable must be connected to the GbE2 port of the OSDR

Before any OSDR Hub configuration is attempted, the following basic requirements must be met.
• Laptop with appropriate Web Browser (Google Chrome or Firefox) to run the Web Node Manager
• Cat5 straight cable (To connect laptop to OSDR Hub)
• Default out-band and failsafe IP address of the OSDR
• The allocated In-Band Management details for the site (IP Address, Subnet Mask, VLAN ID and Gateway
IP)
• Site name and allocated Element / Sector name
• Hub sector is connected to the “GbE DC OUT” port of the allocated WOE card
• The steps outlined for powering the Hub sector is completed and confirmed

• WiBAS OSDR TS will be used at the client end of the network
• WiBAS OSDR TS will register to a specific allocated Hub Sector
• WiBAS OSDR TS will use different antenna types
• WiBAS OSDR TS will be powered by a separately installed PSU unit

The 10GHz ODU can be installed with either a 0.6m parabolic or a flat-panel antenna depending on the
operational requirement. In the case of a flat-panel antenna the ODU will be secured to the structure by means
of the supplied installation kit and the antenna will connect directly to the ODU.
If the 10GHz 0.6m parabolic antenna is required, the antenna will be secured to the structure and the ODU will
connect directly at the back of the antenna.
The 26GHz ODU will be deployed with a 0.3m or 0.6m parabolic antenna. In both cases the antenna will be
secured to the structure and the ODU will connect directly to the back of the antenna.

14.5. WiBAS 10GHz OSDR TS mounting with Flat Panel Antenna


The 10 GHz TS is installed directly onto the standard OSDR mounting kit that is secured to the structure. The flat-
panel antenna is connected directly onto the OSDR. The standard mounting kit can accommodate a pole size of
up to 60mm. An adaption kit is available to attach the standard mounting kit to poles of up to 120mm.

• Configuring the Terminal Station parameters on the Hub

• In Band Management IP, VLAN and Gateway details correctly entered
• WiBAS OSDR Terminal Station registers to the Hub

• System configuration saved
