Indiana Jones' Bullwhip Can Be Yours for $70,000

The famous whip used by the ever popular Indiana Jones will be sold at auction in Los Angeles, and is expected to raise between $50,000 to $70,000. British-based firm Bonhams & Butterfields is running the auction, which features props from Raiders of the Lost Ark. The 12.5 ft-long "stunt whip" is thought to be the one used when Jones was dragged behind a military troop carrier, and is the only one of the six from the film left intact. A prop idol that was also used during filming is expected to sell for between $20,000 and $30,000.

The movie, released 30 years ago, remains massively popular, despite the fact that Steven Spielberg's 2008 sequel to the franchise, the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, was widely panned. Nostalgia runs high, and even a Jones fedora from Crystal Skull was once auctioned for almost $20,000.

Another load of Scott Rothstein's bling heads to auction block

479/457 Dean Road / 1688 River Road: Clarksville, Tennesee

ESTATE AUCTION
June 25, 2011 ~ Starting at 10:00 a.m.
Estate of Robert Dean
Directions From Clarksville: Hwy. 48 South, Right on Dean Rd., Cross River Rd., Sale ahead on right. (Dean Rd.) From Dickson: Hwy 48 North, left on Dean Rd., Cross River Rd., Sale ahead on right, (Dean Rd.). WATCH FOR SIGNS

By Peter Franceschina, Sun Sentinel Next up on the Ponzi auction block: Scott Rothstein's world-class watch collection and the diamond-encrusted jewelry he lavished on his wife, Kim, with some pieces expected to fetch tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars. Also going under the gavel: A collection of stylish lighters used by Rothstein to fire up his premium cigars, two latemodel Corvettes and a 2009 Mercedes SL550 sports coupe. The auction scheduled July 13 at the Broward County Convention Center will be the second major sell-off of Rothstein's material possessions. The first auction in June 2010 featured many of the convicted fraudster's big-ticket toys exotic supercars and yachts and generated great public interest, netting $5.8 million to help repay his bilked investors. As the now-imprisoned Rothstein was grabbing tens of millions of dollars from his investor-victims, he also spent generously on jewelry, but the nature of his purchases remained mysterious they were never described in government documents in the criminal forfeiture action filed against him. Rick Levin, who is handling the auction for the government, declined to hazard a guess on how much it might bring in to help compensate people swindled by Rothstein. "Its high-end jewelry," he said. "It's worth what someone is willing to pay for it. They can be people curious about the issues surrounding the items, or they could be interested in the items themselves." Rothstein is serving a 50-year sentence in federal prison, For more details, visit treasury.gov/auctions/treasury/gp/ftl_main.html.

Coast Guard selling Lake Michigan lighthouse

Estate A U C T I O N
1357 S. Broadway-Portland, TN
S a t u r d a y, J u n e 2 5 , 2 0 1 1 @ 1 0 : 0 0 A . M

MILWAUKEE (AP) If the federal government took out a want ad, it would probably say this: Free to a good home, Milwaukee's breakwater lighthouse. The U.S. Coast Guard has been shedding lighthouses for several years, and now it's time for the light that has stood sentinel over the Milwaukee harbor to get the heave-ho. It could be a museum or the ultimate man cave. And not just anybody can snap it up. First dibs go to local governments or nonprofit groups willing to pay to maintain it under federal guidance. If none step forward, the lighthouse will be auctioned to the highest private bidder. The Coast Guard will continue to maintain the light beacon and foghorn, but the lighthouse has outlived its usefulness, said Arthur Ullenberg, realty specialist for the U.S. General Services Administration. They're trying to get out of the lighthouse business, Ullenberg said of the Coast Guard. Under the 2000 National Lighthouse Historic Preservation Act, the Coast Guard turns over the buildings to the U.S. National Park Service, which publishes their availability. Though most are acquired by nonprofit groups for free in return for restoring and maintaining them for public use such as tours and museums, those that get no interest are eventually auctioned. If the Milwaukee Breakwater Light gets no takers by the Aug. 1 deadline for local governments and nonprofits, it will immediately be put up for auction.

Taking Part in a Real Estate Auction

Preview all properties of interest on any of the Open House dates that will be held prior to the auction. Review the disclosures provided for each property, the terms and conditions, and the sales contract. Be sure you understand all the documentation. Seek the services of an attorney, if appropriate.Get a financing commitment from a lender if you will not be paying cash. Waiting to do this crucial step after you purchase could result in denial and loss of earnest money. A lender will be available at the auction event if you have not yet secured a pre-approval, but it is highly recommended you not wait until this point to check. You might not qualify for financing. At The Event: Check in at the door with the following: Drivers license, state photo ID or passport A cashiers check in an amount specified for each property you intend to bid on (the monetary amount varies per property) Personal check to supplement the cashiers check(s), if needed. A pre-approval letter no more than 30 days old from a mortgage broker or lending institution, if you intend to finance your purchase (vs. a cash transaction). Getting Started: Listen to the the legal terms and conditions, along with the explanation of how the event will proceed. The auctioneer will announce updates on any new additions or deletions that are not part of the printed brochure, so everyone is fully up to date on how to bid. Properties will be listed as Absolute Auction, Minimum Bid Auction or Reserve Auction. The auctioneer will verbally confirm these designations. Depending upon where you are seated in the room, the auctioneer or one of his official assistants standing in the crowd will acknowledge your bid. The auctioneer continues the process, with the price moving ever higher. You can make as many bids as you wish as the process moves along. If You Win: Proceed to the designated area to begin paperwork. A Buyers Premium,(if any), will be added to your winning bid, making your Total Purchase Price your winning bid plus the Buyers Premium. Tender the cashiers check in the amount specified for the subject property. A receipt will be provided. Write a personal check, if needed, to make the required down payment on the property, which is typically 5% of the Total Purchase Price. Your closing will be scheduled within 45 days of the auction. Can You Change Your Mind About A Bid? As long as you inform one of the official bid assistants while the bidding is still in progress and you have not yet been named a winner of the auction. Do not bid if you are unsure or think you might want to retract.
