Coenzyme Q10 and Selenium

for Heart Health

How can they affect heart health?
An infographic by Gemady Langfelder

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and
women in the United States and worldwide. Coenzyme Q10
(CoQ10) and selenium are powerful antioxidants in the body.
Supplementation of these nutrients were found to have
benefits for people with heart disease.

Effect on cholesterol
CoQ10 decreased total cholesterol and
increased HDL cholesterol.
No effect on LDL cholesterol and
triglycerides.
Selenium did not affect cholesterol.

Cardiac function
CoQ10 improved endothelial function in
patients with heart failure.
Did you know? Over half
Not all studies on heart failure reported
of American adults take
improvements. at least one dietary
supplement.

Oxidative stress & Inflammation

Supplementation with
Both CoQ10 and selenium:
CoQ10 and selenium was
safe for heart disease Reduced inflammatory markers: C-
patients reactive protein, interleukin-6
Increase antioxidant enzyme
activity: glutathione peroxidase,
superoxide dismutase

Cardiac-related mortality
Fewer hospitalizations and cardiac
events
Fewer reported deaths related to
heart disease

Ask your patient if antioxidant supplementation is part of

their treatment plan.
