Some features of the series are as follows. The reading material includes extracts from classics and lessons on contemporary themes that deal with issues related to the everyday lives of students. The series facilitates the acquisition of language structure through the three main techniques of Unorrstavonc, Prooucrion and CoxaaunicaoN. The pre-primary and primary books will help children pick up through various activities, the skills of reading and writing. There is special focus on the structure of the language. The content gives access to reading text for personal enjoyment, aesthetic appreciation and critical analysis. The text, both prose and poetry, covers diverse themes like adventure, humour, nature, current global issues, science, sports, mystery, folklore, fiction, myths and legends. Contemporary, authentic situational texts, biographies and travelogues provide opportunities to revisit some subjects, themes and characters. ‘The exercises and activities deal with the creative and the technical aspect of language, and encourage an unrestricted flow of ideas that will go a long way in igniting a keen interest for literature. The Conrmertrsioy section will help students analyse a text consciously and strategically, thus promoting active and critical reading skills. ‘The questions are designed to develop thinking skills like analysing, reasoning, comprehending, sequencing and evaluating. The Vocasuany section will increase the students’ interest in the English language and literature and enable them to enrich their vocabulary. ‘The Grawoas section presents grammar in a structured manner, (albeit based on the deductive approach). Important grammar concepts are graded systematically and explained with examples, followed by exercises. The Laren and Sreaxnc sections offer a wide range of tasks based on real-life situations to enable students to interact confidently in English. The Wamc section has numerous exercises in functional and imaginative writing. Plenty of scaffolding given in the writing tasks to develop confidence in students and to make the tasks less daunting. The tortoise guessed that the deer was being chased by a hunter. “Don’t be afraid,” he said to the deer. “Hunters never come so deep into the forest.” The deer sat down and said, “I am safe now!” “Why don’t you stay with us?” asked the tortoise. The deer agreed and the four soon became very good friends. Every day, they met under the tree and spent time with each other. f/ One morning, the deer did not come. The crow said, “I'll look around for him,” and flew away. Soon he saw the deer trapped in a net on the bank of a river. He went back to his other two friends and told hem what he had seen. it do something . Otherwise, the hunter will come and take him away,” said the tortoise. 7 The mouse said, “If the crow takes me there I will cut through the ropes.” So the crow gently picked the mouse up in his beak and flew to the river bank. The mouse gnawed at the ropes and freed the deer. The tortoise too came crawling as the deer became free. ‘As the four were about to leave, they saw the hunter coming. The crow flew up to a tree. The mouse ran and hid himself in the grass. The deer also ran away. However, the poor tortoise was slow and was caught in the net. The hunter slung the net over his shoulder and began walking along the river bank. The deer thought of a plan to save the tortoise. He told the crow and mouse about it. He lay down in the path of the hunter as though he were dead. The crow sat on the deer’s head and pretended to peck at him. The hunter was happy to see a dead deer. He dropped his net and walked towards the deer. The mouse ran up and gnawed at the ropes of the net. When the hunter came close, the crow flew away and the ‘dead’ deer jumped up and ran for his life. Chiang Mai is a famous hill town. “How much longer?” Nina asked Granny for the third time as she sat beside her sister Sonia in their grandparents’ car. “The drive to Chiang Mai takes three hours, my dear. I always think taking a slow drive is more enjoyable than taking a train tide or flying on the aeroplane.” “I love this drive!” said Sonia. “Nina, look at the greenery! There’s a valley on your side! Grandpa, please drive slowly. There is so much to see.” “Wow!” Nina and Sonia shouted with joy. “Grandpa, why do we come here only once a year?” asked Nina. Grandpa laughed. “We want you to be with us the whole year. However, it rains very heavily during the rainy season. It’s really wet and cold. December to March are the best months to visit Chiang Mai.” “Will you take us to the Mae Sa Waterfalls?” asked Sonia. “Mummy says that it has eight tiers and is surrounded by huge trees.” “Sure! And then we can go for a picnic there if you like,” Granny said. “It is a well-known picnic spot with huge waterfalls,” answered Granny. “We will pack a picnic basket with sandwiches, cakes and fruit.” “Yippie!” cried Nina. “Next week, we can visit the Mae Sa Elephant Training Centre and the Mae Sa Butterfly Farm,” said Grandpa. “We can also visit the Mae Sa Valley Craft Village Resort too.” B “We would love to see all these places!” said Sonia. “I wish T lived here! Sometimes they would play hide and seek around it, They would climb the tree and sit amongst its leaves. Kamal would say, “Look at those squirrels! They like to chase each other.” The tree was the home of many birds. The birds would bring twigs in their beaks to build their nests. Kamal and Karim liked watching the birds. Once a year, the tree would get laden with purple fruits. Kamal and Karim would collect the fruits for themselves and their families. One morning, Kamal and Karim saw three men at Abdul's tea-stall. The men were carrying axes. “Can you tell us the way to the forest?” one of the men asked Abdul. After the men left for the forest, Kamal said, “What will these men do with the axes? We must find out.” “Let’s go to the forest,” said Karim. On reaching the forest they heard a noise - thuk-thuk-thuk. The strangers were cutting down some trees. “Stop that,” Kamal and Karim shouted loudly. “Why are you cutting down these trees?” “Go away, boys. Don’t disturb us,” said one of the men angrily. These men would soon cut down their tree too. The two boys did not like trees being cut down. 21 “Let’s go and ask our teacher for help,” said Karim. They ran all the way to their teacher’s house. On hearing their story, the teacher started ringing the school bell. The villagers asked each other, “Why is the school bell ringing on a holiday? Let’s find out.” They hurried to the school. The teacher told them what the three men were doing. The villagers were angry. “How cruel!” they said. They followed the boys into the forest. The men were about to cut down their tree. “Stop! Don’t touch that tree,” the villagers shouted. The men got scared on seeing so many people. They threw away their axes and ran as fast as they could. More than a hundred people live in the building. There was no place to play, except for the staircase. Jasmine did not like the staircase, It was dark and dirty. But Gautam said, “It’s the best place to play. Come, I'll show you how to have fun.” The children took the lift to the top floor. There Gautam whispered, “Come on, get busy! Everybody ring a bell and run.” “Ring a bell?” asked Jasmine. “What for?” “To see the fun!” Gautam replied. “Come on,” he pushed her towards the stairs. “Start running, or they'll catch you.” They pressed the doorbells of three flats and ran down the stairs. Six floors below, they stopped to listen to the uproar of angry voices. 28 “What’s going on here?” said one person. “Who rang the bell?” shouted another. “Wait till 1 catch you!” one voice said. “Wait till I catch you!” Salim repeated. “This is the best game I have ever played! Gautam said, “Come on, let us do it again.” The children did it again and again. For one week they never got caught. Then one day, they rang the bell of a flat on the eighth floor. Suddenly, the door opened and an old man stood in front of them. “What do you think this is?” he asked quietly. “Fun?” Jasmine stared at him. Her heart raced. She turned and ran down the stairs with Salim and Gautam close behind. Gautam slipped and hit his leg against the railing. “Oh, my leg, my leg!” Gautam cried out with pain. “Come on, get up, Gautam,” Salim pleaded. “I can hear footsteps. The old man is coming down.” “You run,” Gautam moaned. “I can’t move.” “We aren’t leaving you,” said Jasmine. But she felt scared when she heard the footsteps. 29 She looked up at the old man fearfully. He stood shaking his head as he muttered, “You naughty children! Running down the steps like this! You could have killed yourselves!” Then he bent over Gautam and felt his leg. “It’s all right,” he said gently. “No bones broken. Just a cut. Come with me, I'll bandage it.” The children followed the old man to his flat. “Come in children,” he said. “I am Sivanathan.” “We are very sorry, Sir!” all the three children spoke together. “Well, that’s all right, kids, now that you know you were doing something wrong,” said Mr Sivanathan. He started bandaging Gautam’s leg. “Let's be friends. Call me Uncle Siva,” said Uncle Siva and smiled. “There’s no place for us to play, Uncle Siva,” Jasmine said. Uncle Siva patted her cheek, “I have an idea. Since I live alone, I have a spare room. We can form a Kids’ Club in it. Then all you kids can meet here and do whatever you like. On one side of the city was a lake. Only mice lived in that city. They had fun and lived happily. On the other side of the city was a jungle. In the jungle lived a herd of elephants. They were ruled by a wise king and they too lived happily. One summer, it did not rain. The elephants were very thirsty. They decided to go to the lake. As the elephants rushed through the city, they did not see the small mice. They crushed them under their big feet. Many mice died and many got hurt. The rest of the mice held a meeting. They knew that when the elephants returned, many more mice would be killed. “Let us go and talk to the king of the elephants. Maybe he can help,” said a wise mouse. Three mice were sent to the elephant king. They bowed before him. One mouse said, “O King! We come from the city near the lake. While you and your friends were passing through the city, many of us were killed. Sir, will you be kind enough to choose another path next time? We shall be very grateful to you.” The king was sorry to hear that so many mice had died. “Tt won’t happen again,” he promised. “Thank you, Sir. We are small, but we may be able to help you some day,” said the mice. After many days some trappers came to catch elephants. They dug deep pits and covered them with branches. When the elephants passed that way, they fell into the pits. The pits were so deep that they could not climb out. The trappers came and pulled them out. They tied the elephants to trees with thick ropes. Then they went away to tell their leader. The elephant king remembered the mice and their promise. Luckily, the queen had not been caught. She took the king's message to the mice. “Many elephants from our herd have been caught by some trappers. Can you help us?” “OF course we will help,” the mice said. Aunt May pointed to the Metro Station. “Look!” Lina said. “A stair that moves!” “It’s an escalator,” Brian explained. “Tt’s safe,” Aunt May said. “You hold the handrail ~ and step off in time!” “Whee!” Tom said. “This is fun!” “And so fast!” Lina said. “Wait here,” Aunt May said as they got off the escalator. “Tl get the tickets!” “What's our train called?” Lina asked, looking around. “Metro trains don’t have names,” Brian explained. “How will we know which train to get on to?” Tom asked. “Bach train goes in the opposite direction,” their Aunt May explained. “We are taking the train. Come on!” The children followed their aunt to a small gate. “{nsert your tickets here,” said Brian. “The gate will let you pass! But keep your tickets carefully with you.” Lina held her ticket tightly. What if she lost it and was not allowed to travel? She inserted her ticket at the gate and it opened for her. “Isn't the platform beautiful?” Brian said with pride. “Yes,” agreed Lina, “So clean too!” “Here’s our train!” said Aunt May. The train rushed in. The minute it stopped, the sliding doors opened and some people stepped out. “Come on!” Tom jumped in excitedly. “We'll never get seats!” “Wait!” Brian pulled him back. “Let the people get off.” Finally, the children got into the train and sat down. “There is so much to see through the windows.” Lina said excitedly. “We can see so much more of the city!” 43 “We are off, Brian!” Tom exclaimed, Brian got up to offer his seat to an elderly lady. “Look at that traffic jam!” Lina said. “And we are moving above all that noise and confusion.” “How will we know when we have to get off?” asked Tom, a little worried. “There,” his uncle pointed to the display window. “We have to get off at the next station.” “Can’t you hear the announcements?” Lina said. “Come on, children!” their aunt called.
