Many students, for many reasons, find reading an enormous challenge. Despite excellent reading programs, dedicated teachers, and various kinds of interventions, far too many students emerge from the primary grades as struggling readers. One way in which to help these students is through additional phonics instruction. While phonics instruction is an important tool for all readers, itis particularly necessary for those who are at risk for learning difficulties because of poor reading skills. A phonics background—understanding the relationship between sounds and spellings—enables a reader to decode with ease. Decoding aids in word recognition. When students can identify words quickly and accurately, their reading fluency improves. When students spend less time struggling with decoding, their reading comprehension improves. By offering opportunities to review or learn anew basic phonics principles, the lessons in this book help students develop and reinforce decoding skills. You can use the lessons in the sequence given or choose those needed to address specific weaknesses in a student's phonics background. Lesson Organization Each lesson is three pages long and addresses @ particular phonics principle, The first lesson page includes: ‘+ a statement of the phonics principle for the lesson ‘+ examples of the phonics principle + a simple activity reinforcing the principle ‘= one or two other exercises The second page includes: «+ three exercises, including rhyming, word meaning, synonyms, antonyms, homophones, or extending the phonics principle Bert rer o rere xe nertrororerexeres i The third page includes: + two word-meaning exercises including puzzles or riddles Ways to Make the Most of the Lessons '* Before introducing these lessons, be sure that students have alphabetical recognition and some phonemic awareness. * Use the lessons in the classroom for extra practice during regular reading time or as individual assignments. Send the lessons home for students to do as homework or to complete with an adult. Some lessons have Phonics Alerts that point out variations on a particular phonics principle. When students find exceptions to a principle, explain that these principles are generalizations that usually apply, but not always. * Review, review, review. For example, when students are working on a lesson about initial blends, they will also encounter various vowel sounds. Take a minute to remind students about what they already know about those vowel sounds. Help students focus on all the letters or spellings in a word, ‘+ Reinforce a phonics focus by having students create their own word webs for words illustrating different principles, such as blends, long and short vowels, digraphs, and so on. ‘Use the lessons to expand students’ vocabulary. Words that exemplify @ phonics principle are not always familiar to students. Some examples: bog, jag, sly, reek, hue. Keep dictionaries handy for when students encounter these words. * An understanding of phonies can improve spelling. Create spelling lists using the different principles covered in the lessons. * Create word lists from each lesson. Students can use them to practice blending, in word sorts, ‘on word walls, in writing assignments, or in reader's journals. ‘+ Some lessons require students to write tongue twisters. Challenge students to make up the longest tongue twister, the funniest one, or the one that is the most difficult to say. Then hold a contest to see who can say the twister the fastest or the most clearly. * Build on lessons with riddle games. For example: What starts with /s/ and rhymes with dip? After introducing a few examples, encourage students to write their own riddles for classmates to solve. *+ Keep observation charts to monitor progress.
