The yellow wallpaper, the narrator’s husband John, who is a doctor comes to stay
at the house for the summer narrator finds this house to be scary. The narrator’s
husband and brother are both physicians, and they seem to be unconcerned with how
the narrator feels and insist that she abstain from most activity until she is well again.
The narrator, on the other hand, thinks that change and excitement would do her some
good. “ You see he does not believe I am sick! And what can one do? ” ( Gilman,
2009, p. 131) represents the indifference of the relationship between the brother and
her husband toward the narrator
As the days wear on, the narrator continues to write secretively behind John’s
back, as John believes writing will make the narrator’s nervousness worse. The
narrator feels intense guilt at not being more of a help to John, and for her
nervousness getting in the way of their lives. ‘“ I don't know why I should write this, I
don't want to…,it is such a relief? ” ( Gilman, 2009, p.138) 'She continues to become
more isolated as John continues to stress that it is up to the narrator's self-will to get
better. She fancies that the pattern on the wallpaper begins to move.
“ The spoils my ghostliness, I am afraid…, I can feel it” The narrator continues to
study the wallpaper each day and begins to notice that the pattern changes as the light
in the room changes. She begins to see a woman creeping around behind the
wallpaper, and the wallpaper begins to assault her senses even when she is not in the
room. The narrator doesn't sleep anymore, and intently watches the woman in the wall
creeping around the room.
The protagonist is the narrator in the story ‘“ I don’t like our room a bit I
wanted…, ”’ (Gilman, 2009, p.132) Breaking herself out of the hospital cage of her
husband and Jane, and taking the yellow paper so she can be free of anyone so no one
can ever put herself back and the narrator is experiencing anxiety disorder, which
entails avoiding all intellectual effort and performing only domestic duties. She led an
intellectual life, perhaps as a writer, before this rest cure was imposed by her husband,
and profoundly misses creative and intellectual activities. She expresses worry about
her feelings of depression throughout the tale
The goal of the protagonist As the story progresses, the narrator's notice of
wallpaper turns into an obsession, and a desire to leave his house due to the constant
imagining that makes him mentally disturbed.
John is an antagonist of the story, John was a healer of high standing, and became
a doctor to his wife , “ But john would, not hear of it ” (Gilman, 2009, p.132) He is
very practical, rejects superstition, and is only interested in physical facts. This made
him ignore his wife's worries about his inner life, and insist on his healing - rest, food,
air, phosphates, and freedom from the distractions of life outside the home sphere. His
inability to truly recognize his wife's inner life is made clear in his diary, and he faints
from shock when he realizes the true extent of his illness.
The story presents the issue of power relation between husband and wife " so I
take pains to control my self, before him, at least, and that makes me very tired "
drawn is that in the patriarchal environment of the women's movement area and
psychological, emotional, intellectual actualization tend to be limited where women
who oppose these lines will get the stigma of suffering from mental illness because
the husband of the narrator has the power to control the narrator.
