ENTERING SPECIFICATIONS USING THE FACTORY SPECIFICATION MEMORY SYSTEM D111 ALIGNMENT ‘SPECIFICATION INFORMATION The alignment specifications stored in the D111 are based on industry data available at the time of entry. Because specifications are subject to change, refer to vehicle manufacturer service manuals and service bulletins if a question arises. In some cases it may be necessary to refer to the alignment specification book for additional specifications, The specifications in the D111 give toe values and tolerances in measurements of toe-in(+) or measurements of toe-out (—). Press C2) “4” or (2) “¥" to “scroll” up or down through the list until the desired vehicle manufacturer is indicated by the arrow. Press (+) , “Enter Manufacturer’. Press C2) “4” or C) "}" to “scrot” up or down until the desired year and model vehicle is indicated by the arrow. Press (*) , “Enter Moder’. The CRT will change to the “Vehicle Specifi- cations” display. Shown now on this display are the specifications and tolerances for the selected vehicle. note: (2), “Reduce Tolerances’, when pressed will only reduce camber tolerances to £25°, caster tolerance to +.50°, and total toe tolerance to +063" (+.13", 1.5mm depending upon toe units selected). Only tolerances greater than these will be reduced. 12a. ENTERING SPECIFICATIONS NOT CONTAINED IN MEMORY Press C=) , when labeled “Vehicle Specs", to change the CRT to the “Vehicle Specitica’ tions" display. Notice that a highlighted area appears behind the alignment angle for which specificationsare to be entered. Press ©) twice. Key labeled “Select Toe Units”, allows the operator to select from five units of measurement for toe: toe measurement in inches; toe measurement in degrees; toe measurement in millimeters; toe Measurement in millimeters at the reference diameter and toe measurement in inches at the reference diameter the reference diameter must be entered using the numeric keys) GEOMETRIC, CEQMETRIC_| 1 tHnusT LINE Geometric Centerline Alignment Toe on each front wheel is measured and adjusted using the vehicle's geometric centerlineasareference, Geometriccenterline alignment has been used for many years and may provide a satisfactory alignment if the rear wheels are positioned squarely with the geometric cen- terline. However ifthe vehicle's rearwheels (either solid axle or independent suspension) create a thrust line that is not identical with the geo- metric centerline, the front end steering geometry will be off center and the steering wheel will be ‘cocked as the vehicle moves in a straight direction. 4, ALIGNMENT TYPES GEOMETRIC} CENTERLINE ‘Thrust Line Alignment Aligning the front wheels to the vehicle's thrust line is a significant improvement over aligning to the geometric centerline. In the thrust line method, rear individual toe is measured (but not adjusted). The thrust line created by the rear wheels is used as a reference for aligning the front wheels. Asa result, the operatoris assured of astraight steering wheel asthe vehicle moves straight ahead. GEOMETAIC, CENTERLING 77 fo THRUST LINE Total FourWheol Alignment Total four-wheel alignment is the ultimate wheel alignment service. Individual rear toe is measured, then adjusted to the factory specifica- tions. This adjustment brings the thrust line of the rear wheels into coincidence with the vehicle's geo- metric centerline, The front wheels are then aligned to the identical geometric center lineythrustiine. Total fourwheel alignment results Inall four wheels being parallel and the steering wheel and steering geometry being centered as the vehicle moves in a straight line. 10 CONDENSED ALIGNMENT PROCEDURE TOTAL 4-WHEEL 4 SENSORS (OPTICAL OR TOE LINE) ALIGNMENT INSPECTION on LH] * COG wes POWER “ON” BEGIN ALIGNMENT SELECT ALIGNMENT TYPE (REF. In the event the self-test display indicates a failure, contact the factory service representative for corrective action. The self-test display may be obtained by pressing () when labeled “Test”. Pressing () “Continue” will return the pro- gram to the display from which the test functions were started. NOTE: Self-test will not cause the D111 to lose temporary information such as compensation or specifications. 26 30 TROUBLE SHOOTING If the system fails to respond as expected, the most likely causes can be attributed to an operation error and can be found in the table below: IF THE SYMPTOM IS: THE LIKELY CAUSES ARE: 1. When compensating, the system fails to respond to the A,B,C,O compensate switch on the sensor. 2. When viewing the ALIGNMENT MEASUREMENTS display, DEF the measured values do not appear. 3. When performing the caster or SAI turn procedure, the bar GP graphs are both blank. 4, When entering specifications and tolerances, the system Hd ignores some entries. 5. When using the VEHICLE ADJUSTMENT displays, some bar DHL KL graphs appear blank. 6. When using the digital adjust display, some values appear DEK blank. 7. Adjustments were made to camber and caster using the bar MN graphs, but when caster was re-measured, camber and/or caster was found to be incorrect. The causes are: A. The wheel adaptor must be upside-down to start the procedure. Is the green VERT Indicator light on? The adaptor must be right-side up to end the procedure (the red COMP. indicator light on continuously). Is the green VERT indicator light on? See the instructions on COMPENSATING SENSORS. B. Is the red COMP. indicator light blinking on another sensor? C. Are the sensors stable? Is the vehicle being shaken, vibrated, or otherwise The engine should be off. Are the toe lines being disturbed by other acti D. Are the appropriate sensors compensated? See the section on MEASURING CAMBER AND TOE. — Has caster been measured with the caster turn procedure? See the section on MEASURING CASTER. F. Have SAI and included angle been measured with the SAI tun procedure? See the section on MEASURING SAI and INCLUDED ANGLE. G. Are the appropriate sensors compensated? See the sections on MEASURING CASTER and MEASURING SAI and INCLUDED ANGLES. H. Are the tolerances non-zero? |. Arethe values reasonable? See the section on ENTERING VEHICLE SPECIFICATIONS. Was “Enter Number’ key pressed after the value was keyed in? Were the appropriate specifications entered? Are the appropriate tolerances entered? Rew Was the adjustment procedure followed correctly? Was the sensor LEVEL and LOCKED, with the brakes LOCKED and the steering wheel STRAIGHT and LOCKED at the beginning of the adjustment? N. Was the vehicle leaned on during the adjustment? This may flex the suspensions, causing camber and/or caster to be adjusted in error. ©. Is the system calibrated? Refer to service personnel, P. This normally occurs with optical sensors if the wheels are not steered in the directions required. The preceeding table assumes the system is functioning properly. If a program failure should occur, it will be shown on the self-test display. 3. CRT DISPLAY GRAPHICS DISPLAY - shows: TRE 1.
