Education should be free or not
No one can deny the importance of education. As quoted by Nelson Mandela
“education is the most powerful weapon which can be used to change the
world”. Education improves one’s knowledge, skills and develops the
personality and attitude. Today, most of the jobs require candidates who are
qualified through education; hence it has become a necessity. Education, being
such a valuable asset has raised questions to whether it should be free or not.
Education is essential for a better standard of life. Free education would mean
that all people are given the basic qualification to enhance the quality of their
life. Some people do not get the opportunity to focus on their studies. This is
mainly because due to the lack of money. To prevent this from happening, it is
essential to ensure that free education is being given to all. Thus, they will be
able to focus on their studies better and ignore all the other distractions.

Free education ensures that equal opportunities are given to all regardless of
their economic status. Free education will help students concentrate on their
studies more than having to worry about having a job and trying to manage
their schedule daily. If everyone goes to college free we would have a
lower rate of crime as educated people tend to be more civilised. This
would also lead to a better society with increasing economy.

On the other hand free education would also make it more difficult to continue
to improve the standard of education within schools and colleges. If institutions
can’t make a profit from charging their students, they can only make enough to
cover their maintenance costs. They can’t invest in themselves and boost
standards. This would only lead to the continuing decline of education
facilities.

The fact that students who pay for their college are more motivated, hard working
and independent, also cannot be overseen. In general, education should not be
free, because students might be unmotivated, lazy or unconcerned about their
education. Having to work while going to school can be hard, but it can also
teach students the value of a hard day’s work. Overall, it’s important to make
students understand they have responsibilities and it rests on them to take care of
these responsibilities. It’s wrong to place the burdens of others onto the general
population.
