Characters

Kim- (main character) 17-year-old Vietnamese orphan forced to work in Saigon after her parents'
deaths. As a bartender and stripper at Dreamland, an American marines' hangout, she finds work.
There she meets and falls for Chris, an American sergeant. Her religion fuels her desire for survival,
and the birth of her son Tam (conceived with Chris) strengthens her resolve.

Ellen- Chris's American wife, has proven a calming influence after the Vietnam War. She joins Chris
on his return to the East, where she compels him to confront his history. Initially opposed to Chris
moving Kim's child to America, she gradually agrees and supports Chris' idea. As Chris reunites with
his son, she and Chris witness Kim's awful end.

In Saigon, Chris, a young American G.I., is a driver for the American Embassy. He falls for Kim, a
stunning Vietnamese prostitute. After the Vietnam War, he experiences nightmares and cannot
reconcile with his new American wife, Ellen. His sense of responsibility and the news of Kim's
survival lead him to return to the East to face his past.

Engineer- A half-French, half-Vietnamese pimp who has overcome obstacles to own the aptly named
Dreamland nightclub and brothel, where Kim ends up working. He is slick, unscrupulous, and
manipulative, always looking to profit at any cost. To flee Saigon and become an American citizen, he
hopes to find wealth, freedom, and power in the West.

John- A fellow American G.I. and mentor to Chris. He works in the American Embassy in Saigon as an
administrative officer. He returns to America to aid orphaned children fathered by American soldiers
during the war. He will tell Chris that he and Kim had a son named Tam.

Gigi- Kim's coworker at Saigon's Dreamland club. Her desire to get to America keeps her working at
the club. Gigi wins the club's “Miss Saigon” mini-pageant. Gigi finally crowns Kim.

Thuy- Kim's childhood buddy who has been promised Kim's hand in marriage. He is a young, self-
obsessed man fixated on having Kim and fulfilling their parents' initial vows. As the North
Vietnamese army invades Saigon, he abandons the South and becomes a high-ranking Communist
Commissar. He utilizes his new power and position to find Kim after the war and make her his own.

2. Setting

The musical, is set during the Vietnam War beginning in 1975. There are variety of setting used in the
play, the first setting used is the “ Dreamland," a Saigon bar and brothel, where Kim and other
women are working as a prostitute. The place where Kim meet Chris and where their love story
started shortly before the end of the Vietnam War. There is also a room for Chris and the virgin
Kim where they confessed what they felt for each other and dances with love and happiness. There
is also a venue for their wedding day, as Chris became Kim’s husband and they celebrated the day
that they are officially part of each other’s life.

3. Theme

Miss Saigon explores numerous topics, including love's complexities and war's deadly force.
Consider Chris and Kim's romantic bond despite their disparate origins. Their bond shows that love
can transcend hardships. However, the pervasive monetization of intimacy shows that certain
conceptions of love are sexist. The piece also shows how conflict may cause widespread sadness.
Another theme is how different cultures understand, or don't understand, each other. It's widely
believed that the Americans didn't understand or try to understand the Vietnamese people. Chris
marries Kim in a Vietnamese ceremony, but he appears oblivious to what has occurred. It has
effects. Let us also give highlight to the “America Dream” theme in Miss Saigon that shows how
people in Vietnam dream to be in the place of American. This oddity? Or is it the endless possibilities
Kim aspires for? “I deserve to be in a nation where a man sets his price and you pay and he's yours,”
he says. Should be US! That's odd.

4. Symbol

The Saigon Bar and Brothel- This place is called the “Dreamland” where there are lots of women
working as a prostitute and a place where soldiers from America are staying at night. Maybe the
reason behind it is called as dreamland is because it is full of precious and beautiful women that
most of men would dream of.

Guns- this symbolizes war and tragedy. The weapon that they usually use to take other people’s live
and use to harm other people because of cruelty, jealousy, anger and also used as a self-defense
when in danger.

Women- symbolizes love and powerful character that knows how to love purely and be a mother
who is ready to sacrifice everything for the sake of her child.

America- another place that people in Vietnam dreamed of. Another dreamland that they want to
reach to start their new life.

5. Tone

The tone or mood of the story are changing that depends on the scenario. They delivered the
dialogue with their singing skills that make it more dramatic and emotional. The tone and mood of
the story depends on the scenario and how the music played. The song's lovely consonance
accentuates the protagonists' feelings; an undying love for one another in the midst of terrible
situations. This slow song conveys the value of finding love in the midst of battle. The repetitive
pattern of the music reinforces the repeat of the lyrics, reinforcing change in society and the main
protagonists' evolving love. The various stanzas allow the listener to hear all sides, yet if it was all
sung together, it might look forced. This song suggests Chris is in love with Kim, despite having
remarried and ignoring his foreign vows. These opening love ballads in the show are crucial because
the audience feels connected to the couple. Chris' boisterous chorus intros are vital because they
add authenticity to his love for Kim that the plot would otherwise diminish. The entire orchestral
conclusion depicts the end of a war and the death of anything born during it, be it love, children,
hate, or adversaries.
