How did the music make you feel? Why?

- In the musical Miss Saigon, all the music is reflected to the life of Kim, a seventeen-year-old
Vietnamese girl, who worked at “Dreamland,” a Saigon bar and brothel. At the beginning of the
story, I felt sad for Kim, being to work at a brothel because she had no choice. She told Chris
everything on what she had to go through. In the process, it made a fruitful outcome. They
became in love. I was happy because the music reflected a hint of happiness that even though
all of the sufferings they’ve experienced, they still managed to find love. The music felt lively,
romantic, and happy but ended up in a tragedy as they were separated. The entirety of the
music was sad and yet so interesting. I would definitely would want to hear some more.

What have you learned by listening to the music?

- Tragic and destruction caused by the war. How it felt for them, and how it made them suffer
that forced them to make choices they didn’t want to. It also tells a romantic tale set during the
Vietnam War, the melody calls to scrutinize our collective moral obligations regarding the
numerous children of American soldiers destined to ladies in war torn countries and never
claimed or recognized by their fathers. As the music tells the terror of the results of war, it made
me realize that Miss Saigon romanticizes transnational adoption, reaffirming the conviction that
children from the east can only be appropriately raised by white Americans.

What word best describe this music? Why did you choose that word?

- What word best describe the music is tragic. I picked this word on the grounds that the musical
began pitiful on account of the music clarifying the tales of Kim, however as the musical
progressed, it altogether demonstrated a trace of bliss and joy through love in the midst of all
the enduring pain they have encountered because of the war. As the city of Saigon became
more chaotic, this resulted to the separation of Kim and Chris. After 3 years’ time, Chris heard
Kim was alive and has brought his son Tam, this prompts him to go to Bangkok to find Kim and
Tam. After waiting for 3 long years, Kim discovered of the marriage of Chris in America, this
broke her heart and as a result, she killed herself. This made the music tragic, as it explained the
tragic story of Kim’s life.

Would you recommend this piece of music to a friend? To your parents? Why?

- Yes, I would definitely recommend the piece to a friend or family. The piece of Miss Saigon is not
only exceptional but also holds a deeper meaning that lets us undertake the truth behind the
terrors of war, and how it destroys the life of the people. The music portrays and withholds a
sad, happy with a mix of tragic events that makes the piece really wonderful. A heart touching,
ground breaking and extraordinary piece indeed.
