Cambodia Tribunal:

What is it?
It is a special mixed court, established in the Kingdom of Cambodia and with the support of
the international community represented by the United Nations (UN). He intends to bring the
surviving Khmer Rouge leaders to trial by the regime they established in the country between
1975 and 1979 under the name Democratic Kampuchea after their triumph in the
Cambodian Civil War (1970-1975). This regime is credited with the disappearance of one
million seven hundred thousand people1. The court was created in 2006. Between 2007 and
2008, the investigation and detention phase was carried out.

Where does it operate?


It was established in the Kingdom of Cambodia with the support of the international
community represented by the United Nations. It operates only in the Kingdom of Cambodia
because it is the place where the Khmer Rouge operated and killed many people. The
Kingdom of Cambodia, is a country located in the southern portion of the Indochinese
Peninsula in Southeast Asia.

Why does it do it?


It alleged violations of international law and serious crimes perpetrated during the cambodia
genocide, also it is a national court that was establsihed as part of an agreement betwee the
royale government of cambodia and the united nations, and its members include both local
and foreign judges.

Overall situation of the country (ies) involved.


Cambodia had been the victim of genocide lasting between 1975 -1979 mora than 3 million
people were killed after the Khmer Rouge ( a Communist political party had taken power)
After killing more than a quarter of Cambodian populaiton, even before this Genocide
cambodia was at war, this time a civil war, During this time cambodians were ruled by a
Monarchy which promoted a strong sense of nationalism and loyalty, but also seem flawed
with corruption, this corruption spreaded into several underground groups that had planned
to overthrow cambodias government
