Assumptions of Art

Art is universal.

In every country and in every generation, there is always art. Oftentimes, people
feel that what is considered artistic are only those which have been made long time ago.
This is a misconception. Age is not a factor in determining art. An “…art is not good
because it is old, but old because it is good” (Dudley et al., 1960).

Art is not nature.

Art is created by men, whilst nature is given around us. There are instances
wherein men create a representation of nature but that does not mean that art is nature.
Art cannot be nature since men only express their perception and interpretation of
nature. What is found in nature cannot be expected in art.

Art involves experience.

For most people, art does not require a full definition. Art is just experience. By
experience, we mean the “actual doing of something”. “All art depends on experience,
and if one is to know art, he must know it not as fact or information but as experience.”
(Dudley et al., 1960) A writer cannot claim that he is one if he has not written anything.
