During its many years in the field, it
became an industry leader, and is now the preferential partner for important
brands such as Ford, BMW, Volkswagen and many others. Based in Italy, its
business network reaches places as far as Africa, America, Asia and Oceania
An old business partner of Syneto, it needed to enhance their network and
improve the monitoring and control of several Internet-related services.
Problems
Even if Italpresse works in a traditional industry, the role Internet plays in their
activity has become more and more important. Business documents and
directives are sent via email, employees surf the web to gather information and
the company has a public website.
Considering all of the above, it became clear to Italpresse management that the
IT infrastructure had to be improved and valuable assets secured. Syneto, as a
solution provider with strong reputation and prior collaboration history, was
chosen.
Italpresse had needs and problems in more areas. As a first, it needed their
Internet connection to be redundant, ensuring continuous browsing access.
Secondly, the quantity of malware they received via email was overwhelming:
spam, viruses, trojans, phishing turned their workplace into an unsure
environment.
Additionally, they needed a solution that would help them control employees
that surfed the web on non-work related websites.
Solutions
To satisfy the customer's requests, Syneto chose to deploy several solutions
from its portfolio. At its core, the solution started with a Syneto UTM (Unified
Threat Management) product, implemented as a virtualized image inside
Italpresse's VMware vSphere environment.
Additional services were required to fully implement email malware protection
and web navigation control: Total Email Protection and Total Web Protection.
To ensure Internet access continuity and balancing, two Internet providers
were contacted to supply ADSL connectivity: one wired and one wireless.

Service efficiency
By using Syneto technology, the implemented services were ensured availability
levels close to 100%. Hardware redundancy was implemented in the form of a
High Availability master-slave machine configuration.
Reduced email threat
Implementing the malware protection features of the Total Email Protection
drastically reduced spam and virus levels, generating a situation in which today
the gateway filters out 96% of all emails, practically removing spam, viruses,
phishing and zombie attacks. This lead to the increase of employee productivity
and reduced the risk of infecting PCs or network servers.
Secure and controlled navigation
Using the web content filter, the client is able to define granular web access
policies. They chose from more than 100 categories of websites those
categories that would render their employees more productive, at the same
time ensuring that they would not inadvertently download viruses or illegal
content such as unlicensed music or films.
Guaranteed connectivity
The Syneto UTM has a feature called 'Multiple WAN', which, in conjunction
with more than one Internet uplink, allows for connection failover and
balancing. Using this feature, Italpresse can have a continuous Internet
connection that is balanced on two ISP lines, maximizing resource usage, and
ensuring that employees can always do their job.
