It’s thought that the best age to try new things is
between 16 and 30, an age when you have time and
energy. Knowing this, colleges and universities
often offer students some of the most unusual
sports. Here are five of our favorites.
Disc golf
Disc golf is played worldwide and is available at
universities such as Nottingham (UK) or Utah
(USA). Starting at a point called a "tee," a disc is
thrown at 9 or 18 objects called "holes".
Enthusiasts try to hit the holes, which may be
trees, park furniture, posts or baskets, using as few
throws as possible from the tee to the hole.
Different discs are used, depending on the distance
and the wind. The more throws needed, the more
points collected; the player with the fewest points
wins. Playing with trees, benches, and so on, the
disc can bounce or land in water, adding to the
number. However, as an individual outdoor sport
with plenty of walking, it might be the sport for
you.
Rock-paper-scissors
Dating back around 2,000 years, this game was
taken from China to Japan sometime before the
17th century, with fingers originally representing
animals. First noted outside Asia in 19th century
England, the first international club was founded
in 1842. This became the World RPS Club in 1918.
Played with a hand hidden behind the back then
stretched out in front representing a rock, paper, or
scissors, the game is now a competitive sport at
universities including Michigan State.
Night climbing
Invented in England, this sport is a long-
established tradition at both Oxford and
Cambridge. Students climb the walls of colleges
and other buildings and explore the rooftops. It is
classified as a version of urban climbing, but, as
the colleges don’t approve of enthusiasts leaping
about on their roofs, which is clearly risky, they do
it at night - which is even riskier.
Quidditch
This duplicates the Harry Potter game invented
by J. K. Rowling, although obviously there is no
flying, an important element of the fictional
version. Having said that, most other aspects of
the original game are present, with players
sitting on brooms (like brushes) held with one
hand, racing around the pitch in teams and
leaping up to throw or catch the four balls with
the other hand. The game, sometimes known as
“muggle quidditch,” was first played in 2005,
and now has a huge fan base around the world.
Sepak Bola Api
Popular in Indonesia, this is probably the most
thrilling of our college sports. It is, essentially,
soccer, but with one major difference: the ball is
on fire. The ball, which is a coconut, is left in
gasoline or kerosene for hours before the match,
ensuring that the fire is not short-lived. The
game of soccer is played at night, with the ball
on fire, and is said to be beautiful to watch.
