Chapter 1: The Boy Who Lived
1. When describing the Potters, Rowling coins the term “UnDursleyish.” From
what you know so far of the Dursleys, how would you define “UnDursleyish”/
“Dursleyish”?

Based on what we know about the Dursleys from the Harry Potter series, “Dursleyish”
would likely refer to behavior or characteristics that are mean-spirited, narrow-
minded, unkind, and unsympathetic. The Dursleys were portrayed as being obsessed
with conformity, social status, and appearances, and they often looked down upon
those who didn’t fit into their narrow definition of “normal.”

On the other hand, “UnDursleyish” would refer to behavior or characteristics such as

kindness, empathy, and compassion.

2. On the day Harry’s parents died, what were some of the strange things
happening that Mr. Dursley noticed?

On the day Harry’s parents died, Mr. Dursley noticed several strange things happening
around. At the street corner, he noticed a cat that seemed to be reading a map,
although Mr. Dursley dismissed it as an illusion. He also noticed strange, cloaked
people walking in the streets. Mr. Dursley was also hugged by a stranger dressed in a
violet cloak who called him a “muggle.” While watching the evening news, he came
to know that owls had been sighted all over the city. All these events made Mr.
Dursley feel uneasy, and he tried to ignore them and focus on his normal routine.

3. If McGonagall is right that Dumbledore is the only wizard that Voldemort “was
ever afraid of” why does Dumbledore say that “Voldemort has powers that I
will never have”? What do you think he means by this?

Dumbledore's statement suggests that he acknowledges Voldemort's extraordinary

magical abilities, particularly in areas where Dumbledore may lack proficiency. While
Dumbledore is undoubtedly a very powerful wizard, there may be some dark magic or
techniques that Voldemort is better at, which explains why he needs to be cautious
while confronting Voldemort. Additionally, they both have different views on how to
use magic and power, with Dumbledore favoring love and kindness while Voldemort
using fear and intimidation.

4. How are we first introduced to Harry Potter?

1
Harry Potter is first introduced to readers in the opening chapter of "Harry Potter and
the Philosopher's Stone.” The chapter describes how Harry, a baby boy, is left on the
doorstep of 4 Privet Drive, the home of his mother's sister, Petunia Dursley, and her
husband, Vernon Dursley. The couple treats Harry poorly and hides his magical
abilities from him. It's not until Harry receives his letter to attend Hogwarts School of
Witchcraft and Wizardry that he learns of his true identity and the magical world.

Chapter 2: The Vanishing Glass

1. 10 years after having Harry left on their front porch, how have the Dursleys
brought Harry into the family?

Throughout the series, the Dursleys never fully accept Harry as a member of their
family, and they treat him poorly for the most part. They keep him locked in a
cupboard under the stairs and do not provide him with any affection or love. They
also try to prevent him from learning about his magical abilities and the wizarding
world, as they despise anything that is not “normal” or “ordinary.”

2. What is Dudley like? How does he treat Harry?

Dudley is described as overweight, spoiled, and self-centered. He often bullies Harry

physically and verbally and makes fun of his appearance and lack of possessions.
Dudley has a negative attitude towards Harry and is more concerned about his own
needs and desires. He treats Harry poorly and does not show any empathy or kindness
towards him.

3. Where do the Dursleys take Dudley for his birthday? Why does Harry end up
going too?

The Dursleys take Dudley to the zoo for his birthday. Harry ends up going too because
the Dursleys have no one else to leave him with and they don't want to leave him
behind since they’re afraid he’ll destroy the house in their absence.

4. What magical moment do Harry and the snake in the reptile house share at the
end of the chapter?

2
At the end of the chapter, Harry and the snake in the reptile house communicate with
each other in Parseltongue, the language of snakes. Harry asks the snake where he
came from, and the snake tells him that he’s Brazilian, although he was bred in
captivity and has never actually been there before. After being pushed to the ground
by Dursley, Harry accidentally vanishes the glass front of the snake’s tank, and the
snake thanks Harry and escapes.

Chapter 3: The Letters From No One

1. What are the letters that keep coming for Harry? What steps does Mr. Dursley
take to keep Harry from receiving these letters?

The letters are from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, inviting Harry to
attend the school as a student. Initially, Mr. Dursley tries to intercept the letters by
hiding them or ripping them up before Harry can see them. However, as the letters
keep arriving in increasing numbers, Mr. Dursley becomes more and more desperate
to keep them from Harry. He takes the family on a series of increasingly bizarre and
paranoid attempts to escape the letters, including moving to a hotel in a distant town
and even living in a hut on a rocky outcrop in the middle of the sea.

2. Where does Mr. Dursley take the family and why?

Mr. Dursley takes the family to several different places in an attempt to avoid the
letters that keep arriving for Harry. At first, Mr. Dursley takes the family to a dingy
hotel in a distant town, but the letters follow them there. He then takes the family to
a rundown shack on a remote island in the middle of the sea.

3. What is Harry counting down to at the end of the chapter?

At the end of the chapter, Harry is sitting in a hut on the island, with his birthday just

School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

reminds Harry of Dudley and he realizes that he doesn’t want to be friends with
Draco.

Slytherin, which is known for producing dark wizards.

2. Why does the Sorting Hat say that Harry is “difficult”? Into which house is Harry
sorted?

The Sorting Hat says that Harry is difficult because he possesses many qualities that
would make him a good fit for multiple Hogwarts houses. Harry does not want to be
sorted into Slytherin house, and so, the Sorting Hat decides to place Harry in
Gryffindor. This is likely because he has already shown bravery and courage in
standing up to Lord Voldemort, and the Sorting Hat recognizes those traits in him.
6
3. What is Harry’s “strange dream” at the end of the chapter?

Harry had a strange dream at the end of the chapter in which he was wearing
Professor Quirrell’s turban, and the turban kept telling him to transfer to Slytherin, as

that fly around the pitch and try to knock players off their brooms, and the Golden
Snitch, a small, fast-moving ball that is worth 150 points and is caught by the Seeker

what he is guarding.

2. What does Hermione do to Snape during the quidditch game? Why?

9
