Back of the Box
Harry is spending a terrible summer with his uncle, aunt, and cousin, the Dursleys. While the Dursley’s are
enjoying a dinner party, a house elf named Dobby, visits Harry, warning him not to return to Hogwarts.
Harry ignores the warnings, while Dobby aggravates the Dursleys. Harry gets locked up in his room because
of this, and goes to his friend Ron’s house for the rest of the summer. As they prepare to go on the train to
Hogwarts, they are somehow incapable to get on. Instead, they take Ron’s dad’s flying car, which gets them
into trouble. They crash into Hogwarts while landing and are given detentions. On Halloween night,
someone attacks the caretaker’s cat and writes an alarming message. Everyone in the school is told about
this and Ron, Hermione, and Harry investigate. They discovered that fifty years ago, a chamber was opened
and a student was killed. Harry joins a club that was begun by one of his teachers, Lockhart. Harry frightens
the students in the club by speaking in Parseltongue to a snake, the language of serpents. This terrifies the
students because only the heir of one of the four houses, Slytherin, can speak in it, who is also responsible
for opening the chamber. The students now believe that Harry is responsible for the attack and the message.
Strong-willed to catch the culprits, the trio brew up a potion that will allow them to disguise as other people
using a piece of their DNA. The three transform into Slytherins to question an actual Slytherin, Draco
Malfoy, about the Chamber of Secrets. They discover nothing and the attacks don’t occur for a while. Harry
finds a magic diary in the broken bathroom belonging to Tom Riddle, a former student of Hogwarts, and
begins to write back with him. Riddle accused Hagrid of opening the Chamber of Secrets when he was in
school, which he tells Harry. Hermione and a girl from Ravenclaw are the next ones to be attacked, which
gives Ron and Harry a reason to question Hagrid. As Hagrid is getting taken away to the wizard prison
because of him being a suspect, he instructs the boys to follow the spiders. This leads them to finding more
about the Chamber monster. They do what they are told and are almost killed by the giant spiders. The
boys visit Hermione, still asleep, and find a paper crushed in her hand. It shows the description of a basilisk,
a giant snake, and suspect that it is the monster in the Chamber of Secrets. The teachers also tell everyone
that Ron’s sister, Ginny, has been taken down into the chamber. Ron, Harry, and Lockhart go down into the
Chamber. They find that Tom Riddle and Ginny are there. Harry realizes that Tom is actually Voldemort,
which leads to them fighting. Harry defeats Voldemort and Ginny wakes up. Potter specifies his adventure
to Dumbledore. The story ends as the students leave the castle for summer vacation.

Select two important quotes from the book. These quotes should be something that is meaningful and
important to the book. T
hey should stand out to you.
Quote #1:
“Someone shouted through the quiet. "Enemies of the Heir, beware! You'll be next, Mudbloods!" It was
Draco Malfoy. He had pushed to the front of the crowd, his cold eyes alive, his usually bloodless face
flushed, as he grinned at the sight of the hanging, immobile cat.”
Why is this quote important to the book?
This quote is important to the book because while Ron, Harry, and Hermione were looking for the one who
attacked the caretaker’s cat, Draco said this and everyone thought it was him. After taking the potions and
asking him questions, they found out it wasn’t him.
Quote #2:
“"Pass the frying pan." "You've forgotten the magic word," said Harry irritably. The effect of this simple
sentence on the rest of the family was incredible: Dudley gasped and fell off his chair with a crash that
shook the whole kitchen; Mrs. Dursley gave a small scream and clapped her hands to her mouth; Mr.
Dursley jumped to his feet, veins throbbing in his temples.”

Harry Potter is a 12 year old boy who is
known in the wizarding community for

at all. Harry has unkempt, black hair, has
bright, green eyes, has a lightning
bolt-shaped scar on his forehead, wears

what Ron and Harry are doing, she still
stands by them in case anything

hair and brown eyes.
Ron Weasley
