Setting and Story

 
A story takes place at a specific location and at a certain time. The 
place and time together are called the setting. The setting is often 
an important element of a story.  
DIRECTIONS: Practice creating settings. Use your imagination, your 
senses and your vocabulary to make your settings as vivid as 
possible. 
 
1. Describe your classroom. It is not necessary to use complete sentences; just 
take notes about the things that you see around you.

2. Imagine you are going to write a scary story with your classroom as the setting. 
Look closely at your classroom again. How could this setting contribute to making 
your story creepy? What aspects of your classroom are, or could become, creepy?

3. Write the opening paragraph of your story, which should focus on the setting. 
Show the reader the details of your classroom in such a way that establishes the 
mood and the tone of your story.
