Introduction

I am Villanueva, Emmanuel Luis D., a student at Mapúa University currently studying or taking up a degree in
Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering and as a part of partial fulfilment for a course in my program we were
required to come up with an innovation which could be presented towards existing company. And today, I am writing
this to your company, I am writing this to your company, Lift Labs, which I believe would align to your company’s mission
and vision which is to help or assist the elderly by incorporating new technology that can benefit them.

Currently there are other companies who have the same mission and vision as yours however what makes your
company stand out is that you are developing different technologies to assist the elderly and you do not focus
necessarily on a single technology or product which you constantly work on. Your company has a horizontal marketing
approach when it comes to developing products which all have the same goal which is to assist the elderly. So I believe
my innovation if found feasible, can help you achieve your goals and bring substantial amount of profit to the company
as well.

II. Background

Elderly, more often people with Alzheimer’s suffer from delusions and illusions that causes them to believe that
things that they shouldn’t. A good example of this are common cases of reported delusions of elderly patients with
Alzheimer’s riding the bus stop placed across homes for the aged in United Kingdom where they are often intervened by
security personnel of the homes for the aged when they ride the bus and when asked where they are going, they would
usually tell that they are with a relative or a family member asking them to come with them. Even if they are alone. This
is a common reported behavior of people suffering from the said disease. What we aim to do is that if in case they
managed to go out on their own we would be able to come after them and bring them back to safety. However currently
there’s no guaranteed method on how we would go about in doing that. There are existing GPS accessories however the
elderly tends to be quite uncomfortable with it and they have the tendency to remove it thus the accessory would
report inaccurate locations. And here is where we come in – we plan to implant accurate GPS receivers through medical
procedures with the elderly so that it would seem that they won’t be wearing anything while we can accurately track
where they are. We would like to call this innovation “Watch Dog”.

III. Proposed Plan

The plan is to develop an accurate tranceiver that would constantly monitor the location of a patient without
them having to worry about wearing a certain accessory or having to charge it. We aim to develop a device that can be
implanted to a person’s “Darwin’s Point” which is a hallow space in a person’s ear. The device would be powered by a
microprocessor which would act as the main brain of the device, a CMOS battery that can be found in laptops and wrist
watches – the same battery that can keep working for up to 5 years without having the need to be replaced except that
what we’ll be using is a more modern CMOS battery that delivers the same performance and smaller in size. A RAM or a
memory element that can handle the constant update or realtime change of a person’s location. The GPS module which
is an essential component as this is the one that sends and receives the signal which is necessary for triangulation to
take place – or the procedure that is mainly responsible as to how it detects one’s location by constantly sending
updates to three different satellites that are orbitting around our planet and all of this components would then be
sprayed with a hydrophobic coating making it waterproof then placed in a silicone that is similarly used in one person’s
body as an extra layer of protection. So the final product would then be similar to a lump of gel that can be molded in a
way depending on the size and position of the patient’s “Darwin’s Point”. And lastly a gyroscope sensor so that the
device would know where the patient is facing or the user’s orientation this would make it much easier for the trackers
to predict whether the patient is sitting, standing or lying down and also, where the patient might go or head to. If the
CMOS battery runs out after an approximately about 5-10 years, the patient or caretaker may opt to have it reinstalled
or be removed.

IV. Budget

The budget from the proposed innovation can be found below in tabular form. The budgetting would include the
prices from raw materials, overhead costs, and assembly costs.

Raw Materials or Components

Component Price
Microprocessor (Z84C0006PEC 3000 php / pc
model) with RAM (Random (E-gizmo)
Access Memory)
CMOS Battery 120 php / 5 pc
= 24 php / pc
(Lazada)
GPS Module (GYNEO6MV2 800 php
model) (Lazada)
Gyroscope sensor 150 php / pc
(Ebay)
Hydrophobic Coat 250 php / 700 ml bottle
= 3.57 php / 10 ml (amount
necessary per piece)
(Lazada)
Silicone 300 php / 1kg
= 3 php / 10 g (amount
necessary per piece)
(Unprocessed from made-in-
china.com)
Total 3980.57 php per piece

Overhead costs can be approximated to 30,000 per month for the maintenance of the assembly line and
assembly costs can come with a one time payment of 30,000 pesos (industry project standard for a small scale
project) for the development of the Microprocessor code that would handle all the processes of all the other
components. Once the developer is paid there would be no recurring fees for it unless there are updates to be
implemented. And assembly workers can be approximated to a total of 8 work hours and be compensated for it
at a rate of 100 php per hour. Which would be a total of 800 per day’s work equating to a total of 24,000 per
person in a month.

So to build the actual product from the ground up by a single person, the following prices are to be considered
and totaled all in all and prices to be considered are in a monthly basis.
Component Price
Raw Materials / Components 3980.57 php

Overhead costs 30,000 php

Assembly costs 30,000 php

Salary 24,000 php

Total 87,980 php

Considering that the device would be built from the ground up. The prices are expected to lower up to
57,980.57 as the assembly cost would be taken care of with a one time payment.

V. Schedule

The schedule of the work shall be tabulated below, these are approximations with actual completion time.

Week To be completed
1st – 2nd week Material sourcing and
negotiation (finding materials
that would be used in the
system and innovation and
bargain for prices to go lower
when bought in bulk.)

3rd-9th week Programming the source code

of the microcontroller processor
that would control the whole
device.

10th – 11th week Prototyping should begin and

take place to develop a
prototype to be tested
11th -15th week Clinical test shall be held on
selected patients or clients that
would fit certain criteria
16th week onwards Mass production and assembly
shall begin.
20th week Marketing of the product
24th week Actual selling of the product
into the public
th
30 week Survey and follow up with the
clients or patients to see how
we can improve the product

On the first to second week, what we aim to achieve is to find a direct supplier who could offer the raw components
or materials that are listed above in the previous section. If we find a prospective seller, we could arrange to have a
deal wherein we could buy in bulk in exchange for discounted prices. This way we could significantly lower the cost
of the raw materials and we can have them or count them as profits, if not, lower the price of the actual product in
the market.

On the third to ninth week, this is where the developer or programmer of the code would work on programming the
microprocessor which is necessary to create a functional product when all the components are assembled together.
We should give the developer an ample amount of time in order to ensure that there would be no bugs or errors in
the code once he has created the said program or code. This is why the allotted time would be a total of six weeks
wherein normal projects similar to this can be completed in a total of three to four weeks, even lesser if the
programmer is a skilled enough for the job.

On the tenth week, we begin prototyping by putting together the code and components that were previously
prepared we should have a working prototype in a week which we could use in the clinical test for the next weeks.

In the succeeding weeks, which is on the eleventh and the fifteenth week, we aim to do some clinical tests or
prototype test on certain patients and check if there are things to be revised with the product such as its design, it’s
functionality or it’s capability. We believe that a total of four weeks or one month would be enough in order to
gather the data that we need.

Starting on the sixteenth week if things go well and no errors or there are no things to be revised, we aim to start
mass producing the product which we would sell in the general market.

And while production is on the way, we would like to begin marketing and endorsing the product by the twentieth
week. This way we would have enough time to build the “would-be” supply of the innovation towards the
prospective target consumers or clients.

And after a month of advertising the product, we can begin actually selling them. The four month time period
between advertising it and selling the product would be enough to prepare the consumers to check with their self if
they would really like to undergo the medical procedure, this is where certain consent forms are to be filled out and
where they would go get their self checked if they can undergo the procedure.

And lastly on the thirtieth week, we would like to go back to the consumer and check on how they are liking the
product, conduct a thorough survey and see if there’s anything we could improve on. And from their feedback we
could work on an upgrade of the said innovation which would topple the current one being proposed.
