Sample Lesson Using 5-E Learning Style

Teacher:
Date:
Subject/Grade Level:

Objectives
After performing the planned activities, the students should be able to:
1. Prepare acid-base indicators from plant pigments;
2. Identify acidic and basic substances using the plant pigments;
3. Give examples of acids and bases found at home and their uses; and
4. Practice safety precautions in handling and using acids and bases.

Subject Matter
Acids and Bases

Engage (Object, event, or question to engage the students and ask for prior knowledge)
Recall the following:
1. Compounds are classified into acids, bases, and compounds.
2. Some acids and bases are strong; some are weak.
3. Indicators such as litmus paper and phenolphthalein can be used to
identify acids and bases.
Present the situation below to your students.
Suppose you want to find out which among the substances in your home are acids
and bases. You don’t have any litmus paper or phenolphthalein. What will you do?

Explore (Hands-on activities students will be exploring in order to answer the question)
Let the students do Activity No. 1 Acid-Base Indicators from Plant Pigments.

Explain (Students make sense of data gathered. They explain and justify their
explanation using higher order thinking skills)
Elaborate (Students extend their learning to new situations)
What are the applications of acids and bases in our every day lives? Enumerate
some examples.

Evaluate (Students assess their progress in knowledge, skills, and abilities.)

Fill in the blanks with the best answer.
Litmus indicator determines whether a solution is ____________ or
____________. Red litmus paper stays ____________ in acidic solutions and
turns ____________ in alkaline solutions. Blue litmus paper does the opposite and
remains blue in ____________ solutions and changes to red in ____________
solutions.

Universal indicator shows us how ____________ acidic or alkaline a solution is.

This measurement relates to the ______ ______________ where strong acids turn
____________, weak acids turn yellow or ____________ ____________.
Solutions which are neutral turn green while ____________ bases turn dark green.
Solutions which are strongly alkaline will turn dark ____________ or
____________.
Sample Activity

Acid and Base Indicators Obtained from Plant Tissues

Objective:

Determine the pH of a solution based on the color it turns the anthocyanin

pigments in red cabbage juice.

Materials:

beakers soapy water

pipettes/plastic droppers lemon juice

safety glasses vinegar

spot tiles soda

universal indicator tap water

cabbage juice baking soda

milk hand sanitizer

Safety:
1. Cabbage juice and universal indicator are highly pigmented and stain both
clothing and skin.
2. Treat all food stuffs being tested in this lab as contaminated, avoid
tasting/eating any samples.
3. Wear safety glasses for the duration of the lab.

Procedure:
1. Use a pipette to place 2-3 drops of the first sample to be tested into two wells
on the spot tile.
2. In the first well add a drop of universal indicator solution and record any color
change.
3. Using a clean pipette, put 3 drops of cabbage juice into the second well. Record
any color changes.
4. Repeat steps 1-3 for each of the sample substances and record all
observations in the table below. The first row has been completed as an
example.
