Chapter 1 : GENERAL

1.1 GENERAL
MARS INLAND performs scantlings of plating, ordinary stiffeners of any transverse section and ordinary
transversal structural members located along the vessel central part according to Bureau Veritas Rules for the
Classification of Inland Navigation Vessels (NR 217). In addition, the scantling on the other parts of the vessel
can be performed by use of MarsInland. The software tool is organized around the following four modules:

• Home window

• Basic Data (Vessel’s general data)

• Edit (Section’s Input)

• Rule (Section’s Check)

The geometry and the scantling are defined using a user friendly process. MARS INLAND checks that the
actual local scantlings (Hull girder strength, plating and ordinary stiffeners) are in accordance with NR 217.

The program is updated each time the Rules are modified.

3.2 GENERAL
The first tab of the basic ship data window allows defining the identifiers of the vessel and the general data.

Figure 7: GENERAL TAB

Miscellaneous
Standard for bulb plate : Select one of the 5 standards in the list. The geometrical properties of the bulb
plates are stored on internal files corresponding to the 5 cases of the list.

Sailing factor : Ratio of sailing time of the vessel in its life. This value is not taken into account in
the calculation, 1 to be entered.

3.3 NOTATION AND MAIN DATA

The data defined in this tab are the main vessel dimensions, notations, depths and location of hold regions.

Figure 8: NOTATION & MAIN DATA TAB

Bureau Veritas 7
MARSINLAND User’s Guide Booklet 1: Shell / Basic Ship Data

3.3.1 NOTATIONS
Service : identifies the type and service notation of the inland vessel. This notation is used in the local
rule scantling to determine, for example, the load heights and the minimum rule thickness.

The possible type and service notations are:

1 General cargo vessel 8 Dredger
2 Container vessel 9 Hopper dredger / barge
3 Ro-ro cargo vessel 10 Split hopper dredger / barge
4 Passenger vessel /Ferry 11 Launch
5 Passenger vessel 12 Tug / Pusher
6 Bulk cargo vessel 13 Pontoon
7 Tanker

Navigation : identifies the navigation notation of the vessel. There are two ranges of navigation IN and
IN(x ≤ 2).

Self-propelled : identifies whether the vessel has propulsion system or not.

Loading : identifies the loading/unloading sequence on basis of which the vessel structure is designed
loading/unloading in one run, or loading/unloading in two runs or nonhomogeneous
loading/unloading).

3.3.2 MAIN DIMENSIONS

Scantling length : length of the vessel as defined in the Rules

Breadth moulded : breadth moulded of the vessel as defined in the Rules

Block coefficient : block coefficient as defined in the Rules

Contractual service speed : contractual service speed used to calculate the vessel motions

3.3.3 FORE, CENTRAL AND AFT PARTS (FROM AE)

After peak bulkhead : longitudinal location of the after peak bulkhead with respect to aft end, in m

Aftmost cargo area bh (*) : longitudinal location of the aftmost cargo area bulkhead with respect to aft
end, in m

Foremost cargo area bh (*) : longitudinal location of the foremost cargo area bulkhead with respect to aft
end, in m

Collision bulkhead : longitudinal location of the collision bulkhead with respect to the aft end

* Since the version 1.2b, the longitudinal position of the aftmost and foremost bulkheads of the cargo area
must be given. Consequently, the distance XAV and XAR must also be given.

3.3.4 DEPTHS
At strength deck : depth moulded at strength deck in m. The strength deck is defined in Rules.

At top of continuous member : this depth has to be defined when there are continuous member above the
strength deck taking part into the longitudinal strength. This value is useful to

Bureau Veritas 8
MARSINLAND User’s Guide Booklet 1: Shell / Basic Ship Data

determine the scale of plotting. But even when it is no completed the program
searches for continuous member above the strength deck to calculate a
modulus at top if necessary.

Bureau Veritas 9
MARSINLAND User’s Guide Booklet 1: Shell / Basic Ship Data

3.3.5 CALCULATION METHOD (only for vessels < 40m)

General : the requirements which are applied for all vessels are taken into account

Alternative : criteria as mentioned in Part B, Ch 5, Sec 6 will be taken into account

3.4 MOMENT AND DRAUGHT

The third tab of the basic ship data window allows defining moments and draughts for scantling or ballast, as
well as values of GM transverse meta-center and roll radius of gyration.

3.4.1 SCANTLING CASE

Figure 9: MOMENT & DRAUGHT TAB – SCANTLING CASE

Bureau Veritas 10
MARSINLAND User’s Guide Booklet 1: Shell / Basic Ship Data

Still water bending moments

This item allows defining the still water bending moment in vessel central part, in hogging and sagging
conditions, for which the vessel will be calculated. If these values are yet unknown, the scantling will be done
using estimated rule values.
User Design Values
The values of still water bending moments are provided by the designer:
Navigation : Upright vessel condition during navigation

Harbor : Upright vessel condition during loading/unloading

Hogging condition : Still water bending moment in hogging condition calculated in the central part

Sagging condition : Still water bending moment in sagging condition calculated in the central part

Estimated Rule Values

The estimated Rule values of still water bending moment are calculated by the Rules.
In addition to main vessel data, the following parameters are used:
XAV : Distance of foremost cargo edge to foremost cargo area bulkhead

For dry bulk cargo, the default value of XAV is defined in Pt D, Ch 1, Sec2, [1.3]

XAR : Distance of aftmost cargo edge to aftmost cargo area bulkhead

For dry bulk cargo, the default value of XAR is defined in Pt D, Ch 1, Sec2, [1.3]

Loading Factor : Cargo hold/tank filling ratio. By default, loading factor is 1.

Mc Sum : Total correction value for bending moment (with sign) defined in Pt B, Ch 3, Sec 2,
[2.5.1]

Scantling draught : Vessel draught at midship perpendicular used for scantlings

Ballast draught : Vessel minimum draught at midship perpendicular

Other parameters
GM transverse metacenter: GM corresponding to scantling draught or ballast draught. Default values defined
in Pt B, Ch 3, Sec 3, [2] will be taken when zero is entered

Roll radius of gyration : when zero is left there, the software will calculate this entity according to the rules
