School Rules
Every school demands its students to come early every day, which is very difficult because we
really like being in bed instead of getting up early and go to school. We always get up 5 or 10
minutes before the school timetable. Nowadays, the cell phones represent a blg problem for
teachers. Students are all the time looking at them and not paying attention to the teacher. It is
very common to hear a teacher saying "turn off the cell phones please". But students never do it...
We can say that one of the most common problems happens when you are smoker student. You
can't wait for the be!!, so you ask the teacher to go to the toilet, or you do !t during the brakes. The
thing Is that you always find a place to smoke a cigarette without permission. Although your
parents allow you, smoking at school ls not permitted. The same happens with eating chewing
gum. Students iike doing anything they cannot do because they are rebels, they iike breaking the
law. How many times have you hear the teacher saying "don't eat chewing gum"? But, what is the
worst thing for teachers 7 When they told you that you had to study for the exam and as you
didn't, you start trying to cheat. Yes, cheating In exams is the worst thing for teachers. They will
write a 1 on your test and they will never trust you again. I am not saying: "study every day" it is
not necessary, but try to do It before exams. Something that changes depending on the school is
the uniform. Private schools ask their students to use a special uniform, but we know that In
public schools It is not necessary.

XYLEM VESSELS
There are also highly specialised cells
which carry water from the roots all the way
up to the leaves. These cells develop into
tiny tubes, each cell joins with one below
and one above to form a long continuous
. cube for the water to pass through.
These cells are called :\.')'lem (pro
nounced 'zy-lem ') vessels. They
are special because as they .A A cross-section

the cell dies and
forms a hollow tube
allowing the water to ROOT HAIR CELLS
flow smoothly. To make sure that there is always a supply
of water through the stern to the leaves,
plants have a very special type of cell found
only in the root. This cell produces a very
long hair-like extension which stretches out
between the particles of soil. If you have
ever germinated peas or beans on blotting
paper then you will have seen the wispy
hair-like growths near the end of the root.
These are hundreds of extensions formed
from the root hair cells which line the out
side of the root.
The long extensions have the effect of
increasing th,e surface area of the tiny root
cell many, many times. When thousands of
these cells produce similar extensions, then
the surface of the root is multiplied hun
dreds of times and makes the whole process
■
of water uptake much more efficient.
For more about plants see pp40-41.
