A band brake show in the figure has an angle of wrap of 215 0 and a drum
diameter of 120 mm. Calculate the braking torque if the coefficient of friction is
f=0.25.
Given:
θ=215 °=3.7525 radians
d=120mm
f =0.25
Required:
Braking Torque

Solution:
Solve for tension ratio
T 1 fθ (0.25)(3.7525)
=e =e =2.5552
T2

T !=2.5552 T 2

Taking moment about O

(counter-clockwise)
F ( 120 mm ) −T 2 ( 50 mm )=0

70 N (120 mm)
T 2= =168 N
50 mm

Solving for Braking Torque:

T =( T 1−T 2 ) r =( 2.5552 T 2−T 2 ) r=(1.5552T 2 )r

T =1.5552 (168 N ) ( 60 mm ) ( 10001 mmm )

T =15.676416 N−m
