A band brake is used to operate on a 600 mm diameter drum that is rotating at

200 rpm. The coefficient of friction is 0.25. The band brake has an angle of
contact of 270 and one end is fastened to a fixed pin while the other end is
fastened on the brake arm 120 mm from the fixed pin. The straight brake arm is
placed 790 mm long and perpendicular to the diameter bisecting the angle of
contact. Determine the minimum pull necessary at the end of the brake arm to
stop the drum if 34 kW is absorbed.
Given:
d = 600 mm or r = 300 mm
N = 200 r.p.m.
µ = 0.25
θ = 270 degrees = 4.173 rad
Power = 35 kW

Solving for the ratio of the tensions:

2.3 log ( )=µθ
T2
T 1 0.25 x 4.173
log ( )=
T2 2.3

T B=1672 N−m
Solving for T 1:
T B=r (T 1−T 2 )
3
1672 x 10 =300 (T 1−T 2 )

( T 1−T 2 )=5573 N
