Death Penalty Is Not A Cure

It is alarming that these days it is unsafe to walk on streets, in dark places, in a crowded area or
even just staying at our own houses because crime may happen at the most unexpected moment.
There was no day that I haven’t heard of violence in news flashing on our television and it made
me feel absolutely furious to the criminals and sad at the same time for the people who wouldn’t
have the chance to continue enjoying their lives again. It is disturbing that our country have a
high criminality rate because it only proves that this place is full of threats and is unsecured
enough to protect the people. Compiling all these circumstances, the idea of death penalty arose.
And if we view violence as a disease, I don’t think death penalty is the cure.
I am aware and I am not blinded by the facts that many people have been a victim of murder,
homicide, or any barbaric acts and treated in the most violent way possible; tortured, stabbed,
poisoned, until they all bleed to death and it utterly breaks my heart. Just like what happened last
March where a sixteen-year-old girl was killed in a vacant lot at Sitio Mahayahay that made
people tremendously lose their temper. The girl faced a nefarious incident where she was raped
by 3 men, and the face was disfigured, skinned to bone, and took away some of her organs and I
couldn’t imagine the pain she had and her family now that they know what happened to her. This
kind of cruelty opened the mind of the people to make death penalty a law and implemented.
Some of the people left behind by the victims want the criminals to face death as well, as their
justice for the inhumane acts that they have committed. However, I think the idea to make these
wrongful acts right won’t be resolved by also doing the same thing, which is killing them. And I
think agreeing to make death penalty a law will somehow make you synonymous with the
criminals because you are into the death of a person.
Though death penalty will lessen the crimes because no one would attempt to kill someone once
it’s implemented and will help the public from society’s worst criminals, I think we also need to
apply to what God has commanded us to obey “thou shall not kill.” What the criminals have
done was a disrespect to the Almighty but aren’t killing the criminals is also a disrespect to the
Almighty? Once death penalty is implemented, the poor ones will be the most wretched. What if
the accused people were innocent and could hardly make the people believe on their innocence
just because they do not have the power or money to defend themselves and all the eyes was
already into them? Sometimes, we also need to think about all these circumstances before
agreeing to such a grave offense.
I know I would gain a lot haters or enemies right now because I am against to it but I just don’t
want violence to be involve again to make these things right. Let us widen our perspectives and
have a comprehensive understanding about these issues before we conclude a thing. Let us
spread love even though it is hard because the result will surely be staggering.
