Section 3 Look at the reading below about a summer music course.

Decide if the statements below in 11 - 20 are TRUE or FALSE
Music and Sound
Music and Sound, now in its tenth year, is a music school directed by Belinda Holloway
and assisted by a team of professional music teachers. Courses, which take place in July
and August every year, are for young people aged twelve to eighteen. They are great fun
as well as being educational. The aim is to help young musicians to develop their abilities
and confidence in playing and performing. The courses are five days long, and on the final
evening, everyone takes part in a concert for family and friends.
The school offers two courses based on experience. Starting Out is for young musicians
who have been playing an instrument for one or two years, or who have not yet started an
instrument. The students are taught in groups of between five and eight. They take part in
a variety of activities including singing and instrumental work, and experience a wide range
of styles from classical to jazz and pop. Each day a new group of instruments is introduced
for students to try.
Carrying On is a more advanced course suitable for musicians who have already taken
music exams. All students on this course are taught in groups according to ability. There
are no individual lessons and no practice is given for exams. The least experienced will
receive any extra help required, and the more advanced players will be given the
opportunity to try more demanding music. During the course, some students can choose to
take a lesson on composing, during which they can record a piece of music.
The courses are residential and take place at the Music Centre which is set in large
grounds in the south of England. Students will stay in shared rooms with two or three other
students of a similar age. All meals are provided. As well as music, there are social and
sporting activities available during the evenings, including swimming, table tennis, football
and film nights. The music staff stay at the school for the whole of the five days and join in
the evening activities, although there are some visiting coaches for the sporting events.
You can get to the Music Centre by train or by car, and we will send full details and
directions to everyone who is participating. There is no public transport between the
station and the school, so a minibus service will also operate on the days of arrival and
departure between the station and the school.
How to Apply Our courses are popular and we cannot offer places to everyone. Please fill
out an application form which you can find on our website. Then write up to 250 words
explaining why you want to take part in the Summer School.

Section 4 - Reading
Questions 21 – 25
Read the text and questions below.
For each question, mark the correct letter A, B, C or D.
Simone McCauley
I’ve always loved animals, ever since I was a young girl. And when I got to school, I found I
enjoyed studying science. So I guess becoming a vet was a natural career choice for me.
It hasn’t always been easy. It took me many years to get my licence, for one thing. And the
hours and pay are not always great. I think I made the right decision, though. I would
definitely recommend the job to anyone, that’s for sure.
When I first started working as a vet, I was living in a big city. Most of the animals I helped
were small pets. I enjoyed it, but after a few years, I wanted to push myself. That’s when I
began helping the vets at the local zoo. That was very exciting, as you can probably
imagine. One time, the head vet asked me to help him with a sick tiger. It was amazing to
be so close to such a big animal, but my heart was beating very fast, I must say!
When I got married, my husband and I moved to a small village in the countryside. I
became partners with another vet who was living there. He retired a few months ago, so
now it’s just me. I still deal often with sick pets – dogs and cats mostly – but now I also
work with a lot of farm animals. I found that I particularly liked working with and helping
horses. I would say they’re my favourite animal to deal with, in fact.
21
What is the writer’s main reason for writing this text? (1 Ponto)
A - to make it clear why she likes horses so much
B - to explain how other people could become a vet
C - to describe some of the stages in her career
D - to talk about how difficult it is to become a vet
22
Simone says that being a vet is sometimes (1 Ponto)
A - painful because of the animals.
B - difficult because of the conditions.
C - boring because most animals are small.
D - tiring because it takes so long to learn.
23
Simone says she began helping the vets at the local zoo because (1 Ponto)
A - she wanted to experience new challenges.
B - her other job did not keep her busy enough.
C - she thought she could become the head vet.
D - she was interested in helping larger animals.
24
What recent change has happened in Simone’s life? (1 Ponto)
A - She moved away from the big city.
B - She started healing cats and dogs.
C - She became interested in farming.
D - She began working on her own.
25
Which of the following best describes Simone? (1 Ponto)
A - Someone who is in a career she truly loves.
B - Someone who is willing to do anything to help a sick animal.
C - Someone who always wants to learn more and do more.
D - Someone who prefers life in the country to life in the big city.
