The stone castles dominated the village landscape and served as the
administrative centers of the manorial system. The local lord,
whether he was a knight or baron, usually ruled from a castle. The
castle’s presence in the village communities went beyond simple
governance however, and became an integral part of people’s daily
lives. Peasants and serfs were generally required to pay rent in both
yield and service. Yield constituted food, wine or beer, wood for the
cook fires, hay and other goods delivered and stored in the castles.
Services were paid by farming the manorial estates or through
maintaining the castle itself, a practice called noctes. In this

the peasant’s life and the castle itself the center of that life.

utilized for living space.

Fire was a constant fear. The dry hay and grass on the floor posed a
constant hazard to a dwelling whose primary light came from
candles or torches. And contrary to popular opinion, the interior
space of most castles was wooden.

The Great Hall dominated the interior space and was invariably
placed on the ground floor, though in exceptional cases it was
located on the 2nd floor. In smaller castles, the Hall was a multi-
functional room, part administrative, part religious/ceremonial, a
dining room, and, all the while, serving as sleeping quarters for the
Lord and his family. In some more affluent castles a room was built
inside the Great Hall or just above where the Lord and his family
could gain some measure of privacy. Later, as room became
available in the larger castles, the lord and lady shared a room apart
from the rest of the castle, usually on the second floor, but even then,
their servants usually slept on the floor of their chamber. The larger courtyards afforded a Lord with more space in which to
