Organic and Inorganic Farming:

Organic farming is the oldest method of farming and involves completely natural ways of
growing crops. Inorganic farming is unhealthier than organically produced items due to
the use of chemicals but produces more food faster and cheaper. Only about 1.5% of land
globally is organic.

Inorganic farming:
● Uses chemical herbicides, pesticides, insecticides and fertilisers
● Chemically treated seeds
● Grows the same crop continuously on the same land
● Cheaper
● Faster since growth enhancers are used
● Unhealthy-> it gives diseases; pesticides can cause problems such as asthma and
eye problems such as chronic irritation

Organic farming:
● Uses pesticides made from plants and minerals (all natural)
● Uses a machine to get rid of weeds and not herbicides
● Natural fertiliser like animal manure
● Crop rotation (Changes crops between fields from year to year to allow the soil to
get its nutrients back)
● It is more expensive due to the less usage of chemicals and more labour
● Slower production of food due to lack of chemicals and use of only natural things.
● Organic farms typically have a large population of wildlife and birds as it keeps
their natural habitats safe
● Healthy
● Sustainable and less detrimental to the environment
● Maintains biodiversity -> this benefits food chains

Inorganic farming discourages birds from nesting in their farms as the use of insecticides
limit the amount of insects for birds to eat, herbicides reduce weeds and seeds that help
them survive in winters which means there is no suitable place for the birds to live.

Inorganic farming is worse than organic farming in many ways, however, due to its low
price and speedy growth, it is being used more and more around the world as people
prefer it, and so do farmers since they get a larger crop yield.

Inorganic farming is less healthy than organic farming, but from a global perspective,
inorganic farming is much more practical. Since the earth now has such a large
population, we need to feed so many people with the same amount of land, and for there
to be enough food at a low cost for everyone, we have to resort to inorganic farming.
Still, we should try as much as possible to buy organic foods, but sometimes, especially
for poorer people that do not have enough money, it is the only option.
