Pull strength Performance among Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners from

different levels

Introduction

Brazilian Jiu-jitsu - BJJ is a grappling sport . In BJJ, to pull an opponent closer ,

single or repeated movement of pulling is executed at a wide range of loads. The
practitioner need to be able to continuously exert high upper body pulling power .(Daniele
Detanico,(2021))The large muscles of the upper body needed for BJJ include the
latissimus Dorsi and rhomboid in the back for pull strength in addition to shoulders for
pushing and gripping .(Jordan Fernandez, (2020) ) BJJ and Grappling athletes require
incredible amounts of rotator cuff strength, control, and stability. This is because the
shoulder is often trying to control another person moving unpredictably. Such a task is quite
the challenge and can impose a lot of demands on the shoulder.
(Grapplersperformance(2019)) Proper upper body strength work must train all the major
movements of the upper body , which can be generally classified as horizontal and vertical
pushing and pulling .(Leonardo Vidal Andreato,(2017)) Pulling ability is an important and
highly trainable quality . The objectives of this research were to compare pull strength
between horizontal and vertical lines among Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners from different
levels and the correlation between Pull strength and quality of shoulder joint movement.
Objective
1.To investigate and compare pull strength between horizontal and vertical lines
2.To determine the correlates with shoulder joint movements .
Method
20 BJJ male players participated voluntarily and were subdivided in 2 groups:
a) 10 players that have experience in competition b) 10 players that did not have
experience in competition .
The following criteria were considered to include the subjects at the moment the
study was conducted: A) to present age between 19 and 22 years B) to be at least 1 month
of experience in BJJ C) to be training from 2 to 10 h per week D) not to present any
physical limitations to the tests; E) not being using nutritional supplements or potential
ergogenic aids of any kind F) Their experience were not higher than 1 years in other sports
in players that did not have experience in competition

Therefore, This study aims to test 1RM Lat pulldown between 2 different levels of
BJJ players. And find the correlation between pull strength and quality of shoulder joint
movement with 3D motion analysis.
In the days of the tests the participants were instructed to arrive at the gym in a
rested and fully hydrated state and to avoid strenuous exercise in the previous 24h. Each
subject was tested at the same period of the day.
Muscular strength and movement qualities
Measurement
1RM Lat pulldown
Participants warmed up prior to testing by cycling for 5 minutes on a stationary bicycle .
After a 1 minute rest period, participants were familiarized with the resistance machines by
performing 8-10 repetitions of a light load (~50% of predicted 1RM). After a 1 minute of rest,
participants performed a load (~80% of estimated 1RM) through the full range of motion.
After each successful performance, the weight increased until a failed attempt occurred.
One minute rests were given between each attempt .

3D Motion analysis
The participant will attach reflective markers attached to key body segments . And then
perform pulling with sandbag in both horizontal and vertical lines according to movement in
BJJ
Statistical analysis

The data was tested by T-Test. To test the function of the Latissimus Dorsi
muscles in individual BJJ athletes, 1RM Lat pulldown were used to compare muscle
differences in BJJ practitioners with no experience in competition and Group of
practitioner have experience.in competition
3D motion analysis to collect the joint velocity between 2 groups. T-test was used
to indicate differences between group
statistical significance was accepted at an alpha level of p ≤ 0.05.
