M.1748/B.XE 03/31 I = FUNCTIONS OF THE STS 7041 RELAY the St$ 704! is a relay which checks the synchronism between two sources. Thus the relay is part of a chain of authorization designed to give the closing command to a breaker separating : - 2 independent sources, in order to couple the two together (coupling of 2 networks, of an alternator to a network, of 2 alternators together, etc...)(type A). — 2 parts of the same network in order to reciose them (type 8). Application a: 2) FACE-PLATE AND ADJUSTMENTS - 3 setting switches are accessible after removal of the face-plate. These provide adjustment for the three parameters : Au(%un) «+ Switch marked 3, 5, 10, 20 and 30, corzesponding to the absolute voltage difference between the two input voltages as a percentage of Un, ie + 3% Un to + 30% Un. authorization of operation is given when this difference is below the setting value. whew — Lhd. AY + The green LEDAfis lit when the difference Af is below the setting value. fs : The green LED S brightens and dims progressively at the rythm of slip between the angles of the two input voltages. when the 5 difference is zero the LED is at maximum brightness, when it is the LED is not lit, and at + and -90° the LED is partially lit provides a visual evaluation of the phase difference which is p tional to the AF of the two input voltages). - 1 red LED 8]: the indicator $l is a red LED which is permanently lit, and which goes out only when the output unit is picked up, ie when all of Gperacing conditions of voltage, phase-angle, and frequency are combined. Remark : When the relay operates (all conditions for coupling satisfied) the 2 LEDs are lit, and the red one is extinguished. The auxiliary unit has no mechanical operation indicator, as it picks up whenever all the measured conditions are satisfied. IIT - COMMISSIONING OF THE STS 7041 RELAY Inportant recomendations All of our relays are delivered sealed, after calibration and final inspectic in our works. These seals should only be broken when they are being commissioned : duly qualified personnel. It is essential to check that the relay is correctly connected according to diagram 9848, particularly concerning the direction of the voltage transformers a the connections to the relay measuring inputs. An inversion of one of the inputs would cause the STS 7041 relay to give an authorization when the two voltages are phase opposition. The green LEDAfis lit in the angular zone where coupling is allowed and extinguished in the blocking zone. WE STRONGLY ADVISE CHECKING THE ANGULAR CORRESPONDENCE WITH OTHER EXTERNAL SYSTEMS, SUCH AS 2 SYNCAROSCOPE, LAMP OR VOLIMETER CONNECTED IN THE DIFFERENTIAL MODE, ETC chee ortant to check ~ that the voltage transfor identifying label, = that the auxiliary supply voltage is that which is indicated on the relay (operation is ensured within the range Un 20% to Un +1°%) and that the external resistor, if required (voltages above 125¥), is correctly connected, the relay has not been mechanically damaged, - that it is correctly plugged in, the fixing rods being screwed tight hone. ers have a nominal outgut corresponding to that on the WE STRONGLY ADVISE AGAINST TESTING THE RELAY WITHOUT ITS BASE BY PLUGGING STANDARD COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE PLUGS INTO THE FEMALE TERMINALS OF THE RELAY. EQUTDMENT. REQUIRED It is possible t test the relay provided that two variable single-phase sources of voltage are available. These two sources may be of the same frequency but variable phase-angle to check the levels of Sfand Ou. The two sources must be of different frequency for testson theAF level, witha frequency difference F which is variable. For these tests, the TRE/F test set may be used. THE_RELAY TE 3) General test ary supply to'terminals 4 and 5 of the STS 704i (positive pola: = Connect the auxi. on terminal 4). = Connect the two inputs in parallel (terminals 3 and 7 together, and 2 and 6 together} - Apply the auxiliary supply at its nominal voltage. . The red top SL must be lit (output unit not picked up). The green LED AU will also be lit as the input voltages are equal (both at zero). = Now appiy this nominal value of input voltage. The green LED AU will remain lit, and after a time-delay given below, the two other green LEDSAQ and $ will also light up, the red LED 8) will go out, and the output unit will pick up. Time-delay : approximately 8 sec if A® setting is 10°, 14 sec if AP setting is 20°, 26 sec if A setting is 40°. = Slowly reduce the input voltage voltage : the output unit will drop out (and the red zap 31 will light) at a value of approximately 80% un. - Connect each input circuit to a source ac voltage : one input should be set to and maintained at nominal voltage and frequency during the following tests ; the amplitude of the other will be varied, but must have the same phase-angle as the first. - vary slowly the amplitude of voltage on this second source. The green LED AW should light at a value of voltage approximately equal to Un -AU setting. Note : if the OU setting is less than 20%, the red LED $1 will go out and the output unit will pick up simultaneously with the green LED AU. ¢) Checking Ag level - The second voltage source must be capable of phase-shift compared to the first. ~ The amplitudes of both sources must be set of Un. -5- - It is advisable, for this test, to set OF at 0.16 in order to avoid inte: from the frequency difference eiement. - Apply tne intput voltages with a phase-angle between them which is above the Ap sectiag (for example 60°). The green LED AP should not be lit, and che red LED 3 should be 2it. = Slowly reduce the phase-angle d. reached the output relay green L£3s should be lit ference fference, and when the angular setting O 0 is ould pick up, the red LED $3 should go out, and all thres Note : when a continuously variable phase-angle source is not available, apply Guccessively voltages which have an angle above and below the Ad setting. To check in this manner, it is necessary to wait the 8, 14, or 26 sec mentioned in a), depending on the M@ setting. ed out when the mains source is extremely stable, and ‘requency generater which must also be extremely stable. a accurate to 1/100th Hz must also be available (it is also possible \chroscoxe, measuring .the rotation type, which will give a reasonable frequency: accuracy). - As a general rule the test should be carried out on AF setting = 0.16 Hz. - The two input voltages must be set at Un. The network frequency should be checked (F), then the variable frequency source set at Fe! Hz. = the green LAD indscacing slip [2] should Deagaten and din at a rychm of one seca the red LED shculd be lit, and the_output unit should not be picked up. Slowly {nerease the Frequoncy : the LED |S] will brighcen and dim at a lower race and cho Groen LSD 09 will start ¢0 flash. ~ Gose tne frequency F - AF setting, the red 220 Swill be extinguished and che Sueput unit will pick up each time the vectors pass into the correct angular zone {at the same time lighting the green LED Ag}. The rythm will be 1/MF sec. If it is act possible co carry out this test, ic is feasible to check the operat oF the rele againet that of the sunchroscope during commissioning of the alternaror In the event of "abnormal" behaviour of the relay on site, check that : - The auxiliary voltage is supplying the relay correctiy. To this end, insert a milliameter fon 100mA range) in series with the auxiliary supply input to check that current is drawn. = The input voltages are correctly connected and present on the input terminais. - The relay is correctly plugged in (all fixing rods screwed tight home) ne wiring on the relay terminais is correct and according to the relay connection diagram, is continuous (lugs correctly crimped, screws tightened, fuses in order).
